1995 THE DONN HDCP Holy Bull vs Cigar in Battle of the Heavyweights

2022 marks the 27th anniversary of a race that produced a seismic shift in the handicap ranks in 1995, bringing a close to a brilliant racing career while lifting the curtain on another horse's run of historic proportions. The race was the Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park. Just weeks after Jimmy Croll's Holy Bull had been named 1994 champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year, the gray horse was 3-10 in the Donn and sitting right off the flank of the pacesetter down the backstretch.

Just listen to Baily…. He showed so much respect for mike Smith and Holy Bull. Today jockeys would not respect the racing industry like that. He even said that it looks bad for racing to see a horse like Holy Bull getting hurt like that.You could see that it bothered him to win like that. Class all the way.

I was in 11th grade watching this and just loved Holy Bull so much. Could you imagine the kind of rivalry Holy Bull and Cigar would have had that year?

The Bull was such a great champion....and so was Cigar!! Miss those days when horses ran deeper into a career....

Thanks for this! Cigar was barely known was Holly Bull was already a legend. The torched was passed by default. I remember watching live and I was sad after !

An absolute superstar.... obscurely bred.he was super fast and could keep on trucking.... the unfortunate reality is the are fragile animals and it can happen at anytime.

I had Cigar in this race, but I loved Bull but liked Cigar’s form since leaving grass and price

It was me. Sorry. I was on the worst strike of my life and had a big DD going w/the Bull. When he pulled up, I walked out of the room and took a month off from gambling.

Yea he was very fortunate that the better horse broke down. No one knew who Cigar was at that time.

Holy Bull probably would not have won anyway, spotting a horse as good as Cigar 11 pounds was ridiculous Would have liked to see them race at fairer weights

Yes, I doubt the Bull would have won this. Eleven pounds should not make a difference...NOT for a great race horse. It should not have mattered.

@@NalaRichenbach 11 pounds do make a difference though - obviously if he spots 11 points to Concern in the Travers it changes the outcome

@@DanielSong39 Nope, great horses overcome those weights...Forego, John Henry, Kelso, Discovery, etc..... He was a good horse, but not great.,

I loved Holy Bull but he was inconsistent, trainer over ran him imo, I went for Cigar off his improvement on dirt
