@trha2222 Serena would not have played the same way. She would have been coached a bit differently. If Ash had been born to play in the 2000's, he would have been a stronger player. Times change, different eras. Serena would Not have played as strong, and likely would not have been coached and instructed to Scream and Howl by her father just to distract and annoy their (Venus, too) competition. Had Steffi been born to play in the 2000's, she would have been coached to have had a stronger serve, double back hands, along with a likelier stronger forehand and back-spin-hand. Different times, different eras. On such equal terms, Steffi, I believe, would have conquered.

If anyone had any doubts over why tennis fans were crazy about Steffi Graf, then this match should tell you why..she was not on the top of her game and still fought off a real fighter..I was always a Steffi fan and yet felt so much for Aranta Sanchez in this match simply because she too deserved to win..she probably played her best match on this day and yet lost.. both great players and champions..both hugging each other after the match..both true legends of the game.

You were always guaranteed a great match with Steffi. If she was playing well, you'd see some spectacular tennis. If she wasn't, you'd see a very dramatic match.

I think Serena proved her mental strength in many grand slam matches but in terms of grand slam finals Steffi had the best fight backs. 1991 Wimbledon, 1993 Wimbledon, 1995 Wimbledon, 1987 and 1999 French Open and this one were all epics in which she refused to lay down

She was loved for her skill, for her class, for her athleticism, but also for her discretion. Instead Arantxa had a lot of fans for her sympathy and for her desire to fight. She never gave up, not even in front of Queen Steffi.

Incredibly, both Arantxa and Steffi would go on to win the title again. What a match! No one could have retrieved those shots from Steffi other than Arantxa. And Steffi was relentless.

It was a very close and intense match where either of the two could take it, Arantxa did not know how to take advantage of the opportunities to raise her favorite cup again. Graf finally was the one that won the title.

She was a terrible sport when she lost? Do you remember what she said, about Navratilova and Evert after losing to Navratilova @usopen in 1986? She wasn't perfect, she was a terrible loser's when she was young, and I have no idea where you are getting the information how popular she still is today? With whom? People in their 50's? Graf was the better athlete and more weapons to counter Sanchez's counter game. Perhaps Sanchez could have added more weight to her racquet to add more power. And have different racquet weights, tension, etc. based on the situation. The loopy shots didn't work against Graf. Graf would run around and hit forehands which is her favorite move.

In long term, seles record against Navratilova, Gabriel and sanchez or other players in this generation were much better than steffi had against them

Considering 10 of Graf's 18 matches vs Navratilova were from 85-87, and only 4 were after 1989, and almost all of Seles's matches vs Navratilova were when she was a granny, Graf's 9-9 vs Navratilova is WAY better than Seles's 7-10. Sabatini has about the same winning record vs Seles as she does vs Graf. She won about a quarter of her matches vs both. The only one you are right on is Sanchez. However Graf has much better records vs Novotna, Capriati, Davenport, Hingis, Venus, Serena, Pierce, and basically everyone else you can think of. You are delusional.

Poor Arantxa. So sorry for her that evening. A terrible defeat that hit her psyche hard. She's so weak and feminine after the game. A real lovely woman. But unlucky. Gentle and passionate Arantxa was more suitable for the tennis queen than the cold-blooded Steffi.
