I love these cars in a way. It's a middle finger to 7-year car loans, $120 tank fillups, and sweating about door dings.

My uncle is 6’5 and like 210 pounds, tall thin fella. He went to the dealer in 1995 and said, “I’ll buy whatever I can fit in,” and thought the salesman was having a hoot when he wheeled up a Metro. But the seat scooches so far back it was a great fit! He dailied that thing until it had 300,000 miles.

All jokes aside, and in the most somber seriousness. I have cried at this review. I was expecting a real review, not a reality check. At one point in my life I had three of these. Now I just have one, my museum metro. I don't know if you wrote it satirically, but this car did exactly what you said. It saved my life. It got me out of my dead end meth slum town, to the city, to work a honest job, it got me out of debt, it got me through college and the first seven years of my career... This wretched little car, and make no mistake metros are wretched, is directly responsible for the success I have today.

I made a mid-engine SHO-swapped Metro. One of my fondest memories of that car was there was a point in the build that I had the new drivetrain fully installed (not yet running) but the stock drivetrain was also still working. So I got to experience what it feels like to drive a stock metro essentially lugging around the dead weight of an entire front half of a Taurus 😂.

I have had a 1993 Geo Metro for around two years, and it is by far my favorite car I have ever owned. Never before have I felt "connected" to a car, but my little red Geo, "Tug," has somehow managed it. There is a weird companionship with these little things that is so hard to explain. I plan on cherishing my Geo, considering nothing like it will ever be made again. Long live the Geo Metro, man.

I saw a green Geo Metro on the highway a few months ago. It was stock with a single mirror and was driven like a MENACE. They were weaving in and out of traffic, and it was GLORIOUS to see. Best thing I've seen on the highway.

I'm glad you talk about the safety issue of this car. Because when I was younger my dad had to drive a 93 geo metro as his daily for work as a contract security guard. In 2008 he was out visiting a friend it was raining heavily and he took a turn hit a thick patch of wet leaves slid and for some reason in the middle of fuckin nowhere Pennsylvania he got into a nearly head on collision with a Lincoln Navigator. Unfortunately this car model was before air bags were mandated so he didn't have an air bag. The seatbelt saved his life from flying out of the car but he slammed his face into the steering wheel. He had a laundry list of injuries from the accident, most notably a shattered left orbital bone (that's the bones around the eye), a broken jaw, a broken left leg, and (as written on the report by the doctor) several broken ribs. Unfortunately even after he survived, all of that had made him age off a cliff. You'd think he was in his 60s or 70s by the time he died in 2015. He died at 49. I don't post this to scare people away from this car. I really liked that little fart cart, it was fun to drive around in at my grandparents place. I post this just to tell people. Be careful. These cars are good and point A point B. But they are like Little Mac vs Mike Tyson. If you've read this this far Thank you for your time and I hope you have a nice day.

When my grandma moved up to North Carolina from Texas back in the mid 90’s, the Geo Metro was the first car she had. I remember her pulling up to our house in the early 2000’s to watch me and my brother. Even after she passed in 2021, this car will have a special place in my heart

When I think of a Geo Metro the only thing I really remember is a family that lived across the street from us in the 90's who had one. The thing that was hilarious about it is the whole family was FAT. 14 year old me would watch in fascination as the husband, wife, and both children would squeeze into that thing and by the time they somehow all got in it would be almost touching the ground as they drove off. I'll never forget those memories.

In 1994, my buddy got one as a grad present. We road tripped from Seattle to Boston, down to Nashville, and back to California before returning home. 3 months. 97 days to be exact. It was magnificent. He had that car until 2010 when he got married and had kids. To my knowledge, it never died.

I love this review so much. When I was doing car reviews for Jalopnik or Hearst it was clear to me that the cheap cars were SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than the megabux luxury sports whatevers. "What can we achieve with no budget?" is a far more engaging question than "what can we do with an unlimited budget?"

We had a Geo Metro for years, loved that thing. The gas mileage was incredible. We could fit a colossal amount of stuff in the hatchback. The tires were tiny and cheap to replace. We could fit in any parking spot except for SmartCar spaces. We were pulled out of a ferry queue once and directed to the front of the line to be the last car on the ferry because there was JUST enough room for us. My 6’2” husband fit into it easily. Campers passed us on hills. Once we had the oil changed and the mechanic said “the engine - it’s so cute!” We put over 100k on it, including driving from BC to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (yes over the Rockies). Sold it eventually to a collector of Geos on Vancouver Island. I hope she’s still driving around somewhere. Miss you, little Jelly Bean.

Learned how to drive a manual transmission on a Geo Metro in the 90s. Anytime I see one, it takes me back to being a teenager.

I think the "metro" name was accurate as it would be a great runabout in city streets. Fun fact, someone near where I lived in the early 2000's had a geo metro convertible...red....with a Supra style spoiler and large white Batman hubcap covers that stayed level while driving....very odd

This was my first car when I was 19. Video brought back memories of struggling up a hill on 695, cresting over it and getting a speeding ticket for going 1mph over. That feel when officer says "do you know how fast you were going?" and you're scrunched into a metro.

I was not expecting a review for a Geo Metro to be so philosophical and inspiring. I’m now saving money better than ever before, and I got out of the depressing rut I was in. And to think that out of every motivational video I’ve watched, this was the one that I needed! I’m still working on getting a car though, but that day will come. I realize that when you minimize your life, it really does help you let go of your expectations. I haven’t been this content in quite a long time, and I have nothing but gratitude for the wonderful messages this channel gifts their viewers. Thanks RCR, and much love from John.

One thing about Geo is they really had a talent for picking cars to rebadge that people actually liked, accounting for what they were. The people that had em would have liked something nicer, to the extent they cared, sure, but they tended to be really trustworthy and a lot of non-car people really appreciated that. (Though I had an ex who started with one of those and then after that got a Paseo and considered it a fast car. :) )

In 2005, I sold the Chevy version of one of those to a guy that was so excited that he could afford a new car that had all weather tires. He rode a bike to the dealership.

My first year in the army was spent with my buddy in his 95 Metro. Some of the best times in my life.

I had a 99 for a long time. It saved me a ton of money & hauled a ton of wood pellets stacked up to the roof & passenger seat twice a year. Also moved a 450 lb wood stove across 1,000 miles & still got 38 mpg doing it. It did mpg & stuff in the back really well which is more than I can say for some other vehicles I've owned.

Thank you for bringing the geo back into collective consciousness. Ive driven mine since 97 when I got a 95 "used" one. I havent even looked at new cars to buy, my geo just keeps chugging with minimal maintenance even after 400k miles. It is slow, it is no frills, but it always gets me from point A to point B with no problems. And thats all I want from a car.

The first car I bought was an used 1995 Suzuki Swift in 1999. I had it until 2010. Can't complain. It was a very serviceable car.

THANK YOU for giving a real impression of this car. EVERYTHING you said about this is 100% correct. I owned a 1996 with 198,000 miles. Just like you said, you could rev it all day and it would return 40+ mpg. It saved me a ton of money during the 2000s recession when I was broke but still needed to get from point A to B for my additional jobs. I would love to have another one of these again.

A metro 3 cyl is a gem of a car. So simple so fun so efficient and affordable. One of the best cars of all time to me. I could drive the thing like a race car and not break the speed limit.

My Saturn SC was like this; underpowered, cheap, and fought for every scrap of power and grip on the road. It was honest and you felt accomplished after every trip you make in it. The realization of being surrounded by vehicles that can crush it just by sniffing at it persuaded me to upgrade to something more substantial.

My grandpa took me to middle school in one of these things for a few years. Called it the roller skate since it was so friggin' tiny, tinier than anything we had ever seen or previously owned. All I remember about the drive was he contracted MS in his legs so most of the time he couldn't fully get the clutch down so he'd grind the gears like nothing else. But she still kept truckin'.

I'm so happy someone finally submitted one of these. I had one back in 2017 that I wanted to submit, but it started to have problems and was too dangerous to submit in good conscience. That being said, it was the coolest vehicle to have in high school. When I got it in 2016, gas was $1 a gallon for a bit and took a while to climb. None of my friends had cars so they paid me to drive them everywhere. We went on day trips, raced clapped out fiestas, and even coasted down a mountain just to see if we could get to the pie shop without an engine (we nearly had it perfect too, if someone hadn't stepped into the parking spot we wouldn't have needed the engine for the last 2 feet). We even found a funny trick, if 2 or more people rocked back and forth in the seats, you could get a speed boost. You could watch the speedometer jump up each time. I sold it for more than I paid and made that much again in gas money. I'll never forget watching that car drive away for the last time.

Our family of 9 had 4 Geo metros at one point, we loved these cars so much. Now I have my dads 99 metro, and I drive it daily. I love these little cars, I can fix anything in a matter of minutes compared to other cars. Also feels like a little gocart to drive around

One correction: some of the 4-cylinder models had power steering. I have had a base '92 Metro since 2010. It has 311,000 miles on it and still gets more than 50 mpg.

I had one early on into my driving days. You absolutely have to drive it like a two stroke. The next car was an upgrad; 97 Tercel CE in "Salmon Red"...it was pink. You reviewed the same tercel years ago on this channel and I cried internally.

My best bud had one in high school in ‘96. We’d go all week on $8 in gas. It was great.

I had one with subframe rust that ultimately was not found quick enough to save it. But I loved that car in a way I haven’t loved anything else, more than my old Yaris, it really provided smiles. The sense of adventure in doing routine driving, the amount of effort you put in to driving this car at mundane speeds. It was such an engaging car.

The fact that this episode came out as I am working towards my license and saving up for a car is practically prophetic! It's really inspiring, and I wish anyone else working through the same thing good luck!

My first car was a 96 Geo Metro LSi with the 4-cylinder not the three. So it had some power. However a popular engine swap because it's actually a Suzuki with a Chevy badge basically, you can take the Suzuki Swift GTI which is a 100 HP 1300 cc engine and put it in there or you can put a real motor in there and take the 2.3 l engine out of a Suzuki aerio which will bolt right up to the stock Geo Metro gearbox. Don't know much but 160 horsepower in a 1600 pound car is going to make that thing scoot.

My grandmother would take me and my siblings to school in one of these. It was a ‘95 and was sky blue, and had the automatic transmission in it. She drove it around the Las Vegas Valley for 15 years and drove it for an additional 10 when she moved to Omaha, NE. She sold it to a coworker in Michigan and it’s still running around the state to this day. The nostalgia of these things for me is unlike anything else in my life.

My mom had a Geo Metro and she loved that car so much. We took a lot of trips in that little thing. I miss my mom now, and the Metro will always have my respect.

I owned one with a gf in the 90's. We bought it new and it was a wonderful car. Purpose engineered, well designed and good enough build quality. We were thrilled to have a brand new, fuel efficient car.

I literally bought 4 brand new tires for $80 on one of these 20 years ago. Amazing car.

My parents used to have 3 of these. The loss of gas mileage was due to changes in the ECU programming to meet updated emissions standards. You could frankenstein gen1 programming to a gen2 ECU and gain 10 - 15 mpg. Smash up the cat, remove the back seats, and replace the intake and you can easily get 60+ mpg. I drove my Dad's test Metro from Montgomery, AL to Disney world and a little of the way back on a single tank of gas, which would have cost a little less than $10. As much as the butt of jokes that the Metros were, I did have a ton of fun driving and tinkering on them with my Dad.

20 years ago, when I was in High School, there were multiple - as in more than one, Geo Metros in the student lot with aftermarket fart cans strapped on the back. Just one of these combinations is one too many!

This was my first car but my dad totaled it the day after he got it for me while I was in the passenger seat. I remember a lamp pole coming down on the car and getting out just fine. Absolutely insane childhood memory.

Nothing brings me back to 90s family struggle then a Geo Metro. My mom was door to door nurse in the 90s and I remember driving around in her work provided navy blue Metro feeling like a giant dweeb. It was scandalously rickety and light but it never let her down.

I learned to drive in a 91 Metro with the 1L and 5-speed! It was surprisingly fun to drive. But I would never let my kids anywhere near one today!

I've been over 100 mph in one of those! Also rode around with 9 people in it once! Amazing vehicle!

I used to drive one of these for Napa auto parts. I learned Joe to drive stick on it. It was a fun car for being so low powered. It had a horrible exhaust leak and I felt like I was in a fast and furious movie because I had to keep my foot in the pedal. It actually handled better than expected for how slow it was. The key to having the fun in that car was to enter the curves as fast as you could.

I honestly never had an opinion on the Geo Metro until now, and I'm liking it! Yeah, it's cheap and slow, but it looks kinda good. Reminds me of the Ford KA, or certain Kei cars of that era. I'm sure it'd be fun go-kart with an engine swap and some decent drive-train components

That heat sink thing on the valve cover is to help condense the hot oil fog, so oil stays in the engine and blow-by goes out the PCV valve into the intake to get burnt. Less oil, the less emissions you make.

My friends wife owned an automatic Metro sedan back in high school. Couldn't get it past 55 on a level road. But 45 mpg was great for 2006 when the price of gas spiked

I used to drive a Geo Metro regularly between NYC and Toronto about every 2 weeks. It ran flawlessly and cheaply oh and with a lot of road noise and it felt a wee bit dangerous based on how tiny and light it was but that car spelled freedom and reliability. It was a really good car.

This video also captures exactly how I feel about my yugo, it’s a pain in many respects it’s got a lot going against it but at the end of the day there’s not a part on the thing that exceeds $500 and it keeps going, it’s also very fun in a way that few can appreciate. It gets the job done.

I had to drive one of these Metro convertibles once, and at 45mph, it was scary to be on the road with other cars. And that was in the 90’s.

Did a parts delivery job in highschool (2004). They had a (from new) 1998 Metro, 2dr hatch automatic no ac no options. In 2004 it had 457000 well abused kilometers the last i saw it. Everyone said once it died, they'd replace it. I saw it driving for 3 years after i graduated lol Horrible yet great car

The Mitsubishi Mirage is what everyone today who would love a Geo Metro would *actually love.* I know because I used to own a Metro and I'm a current 2021 Mirage manual owner. 46 MPG average over the past 50,000 miles, but 78 hp instead of the 55 hp of this.

One of the best RCR videos ever! I thought you would bash this car all the way to the end but you didn’t. I’ve never owned a geo metro but I respect it for what it is. I’ve known a few people that had them over the years and they are amazing little cars, not pretentious or trying to be anything they aren’t. Just a humble basic car with amazing MPG and cheap maintenance.

You mentioned the Tracker and my heart got soft. I had a '91 tracker 5MT, and even though I would never DARE to take it over 65, that thing was easily the most lovable and enjoyable car I have ever driven. I still regret selling it. Miss you, Sparky

I was about to say that you can totally do these kinda MPG figures with modern cars, and point to the VW Lupo. Then I remembered the VW Lupo is 26 years old, and gazed long into the yawning jaws of entropy gaping before me.

I've been waiting for this episode. The Metro was a dream car of mine ever since I learned of it's existence... I was a child in the 90s, learned to drive in the late 2000s and bought my own first car at the end of that decade. I didn't even know the Geo Metro was a thing until years later, and I finally bought one of my very own in the next 5 following years and to this day is my favorite car I've ever owned... And I've owned sooo many. When the transmission finally fused 4th gear to the shaft and I could no longer shift it, and I realized it would cost more to fix it than I bought it for, I felt, at the time, that I had to make the smart financial decision to move on. Hindsight is 20/20. I miss that car every day. Maybe sometimes hubris is worth sticking to...

Hey, the Geo Metro. A car seriously underrated by virtue of its simplicity, fuel economy and durability. In my country we had them everywhere, both the 1st (Chevy Sprint) and 2nd gen (Swift) were sold for 10 to 15 years straight, discontinued in 2005! They were even used as taxis. We loved them, parts are everywhere and they still hold value. We even had a hot hatch variant, the Swift GTI twin cam with a 1.3L engine and 100 hp, those cars are still raced today. Had the chance to drive a regular Swift and they're so light and simple, it really doesn't need power steering, I really liked it.

I had a 1998 metro 4 door sedan that had the 4cyl engine and was fully loaded with ac and power steering. Loved that little car. Made multiple 1400 mile round trips with that little car in the late 90's. And it would cruise fast enough on the highway to get a speeding ticket. I got a 80mph in a 65 in Elizabethtown ky.

I used to drive a metro. In 2013. It was a 1991 2 door, in white. It was the previous body style to this one. I bought it from a guy for $50. I put a water pump on it and it was driveable. I ended up rebuilding the head, and I built a muffler for it out of scrap metal from work. I cracked the distributor mount, but thankfully I worked with incredibly talented people, and I was able to get the aluminum casting welded. The 12" tires were ridiculously difficult to get ahold of, so I put some 14" steelies off an old Accord on it, with some little 175/75R14 tires. This completely transformed the way the car rode and handled, it smoothed out the bumps in the road and handled corners like a go-kart. And it looked cool with the "wide" tires. I recently bought a motorcycle with a 975cc engine, 18cc smaller than the metro's 993cc. The motorcycle has almost twice as much power, but it doesn't quite get the 55 MPG that the Metro did.

Ahh, fantastic words in this review. I love the acknowledgement of cars like this. Cars that are so reductively simple and cheap, but still perform the magical function of a car: being able to haul you to wherever you need or want to be. Bless cars like the Metro. I had a Geo Metro in 1999 and it was no more dangerous than a motorcycle. It kept me dry in the Seattle rain, and it exemplified the "slow car fast" type of fun. There was a time when gas was just under a dollar a gallon, and I could fill the tank for under 8 bucks, and then drive for a week. I could park it perpendicular to the curb in downtown Seattle when parking was hard to find. It was definitely the most convenient, less imposing car I've ever owned. It was like a miniature Golden retriever - fun, loyal and harmless.

I've got a metro with ac. There's a button to turn it off. You press that before you accelerate, then turn the ac back on once you're at speed. Also, storage is surprisingly roomy when you put the back seat down. I've moved a motorcycle by shoving in the back of mine.
