The 1996 Johnny Petraglia Open was bowled at Carolier Lanes during the week. The house that the great & truly wonderful Johnny Petraglia built with his reputation. Petraglia is a wonderful ambassador for the entire bowling industry. Brunswick representative that has won in six different decades.

That Danger Zone was a beastly ball back in '96. Averaged almost 200 with it at 16 years old, after avg like 179 previous. Serious striking power and crazy hook. Too bad they cracked all the time. ALL the time.

That Pete Weber. He is truly amazing. Bo Burton has made a whole lot of very relevant statements. One of those is: "You live by the sword. You die by the sword". Which is relevant regarding Pete in the match against Walter Ray in that when Weber softens his speed on certain lane conditions, the ball goes through the nose as it did in that 8th frame. And, he did get a bad break in the 6th leaving that blow out 7-10. Then, another bad break in the 9th leaving that light 8-10. I've never seen Pete Weber leave a light 8-10! He actually had a chance if he would've stayed clean in the 9th but in a one game match just about anything can happen. Remember too, that even though Pete likes long oil it is a tricky condition when that oil migrates down the lane. Ball selection is critical on most patterns especially when there is carry down. Walter Ray did have some bad breaks too but Walter Ray has the perfect temperament for professional bowling. He shakes off bad breaks better than any bowler that I've ever seen. And, he very, very rarely beats himself because he keeps the ball in play. And, not that it matters towards consistently hitting the pocket but Walter Ray is SUCH A LIKEABLE GUY. I admire Pete and he has great intensity. He's a like or dislike type of professional bowler. Yet, I've never met anyone who doesn't like Walter Ray, Norm Duke, Mike Aulby and Brian Voss. Obviously, all of those professionals have a winning attitude and are also complete professionals. I have to once again compliment Nelson Burton JR. as the best professional bowling commentatrer. By far the best ever in my mind. His complete knowledge, his passion for professional bowling, he can be eloquent and succinct at the same time, and he has genuine enthusiasm. He knows all of the players very well. Their strengths & weaknesses. He's just the most genuine commentator I've ever seen in any sport. Actually, he was nominated for an Emmy but years ago bowling didn't receive the praise that it deserves. Don't misunderstand. I think that Randy Pederson is very good. He makes his craft look easy. But NOBODY compares to Nelson Burton JR. He even like to try to stay in shape. I find him to be a role model for professional bowling. Similar to what Dick Weber was as the greatest ambassador that bowling has ever had. Remember too that Dick Weber was much more than a wonderful bowling ambassador. He was a great father. Just look at John, Rich, of course Pete, and Paula. All EXCELLENT PEOPLE.

WRJ was something at his peak. He just never made what you'd call 'mistakes'. He'd either carry or he wouldn't. He'd pretty much always make the spare. Because his full roller wasn't the strongest strike ball, that was your only hope of beating him. Staying clean, strike a lot and hope he's not carrying. Because on TV the only break you'd get against Williams Jr. was pin physics not going his way. Because he hardly ever made a bad shot once he dialed in.
@beeemm2578

@Icecold185/Probably Jack Biondolillo. I would have to look at it again. It might have been Johnny Guenther. If I remember correctly, a televised 300 on ABC TV paid 10G. When, Bob Learn JR. shot a nationally televised 300, in 1996 it might have been, it was worth 100G. A thrill for the bowler of course. But a thrill for the audiences at home watching not to mention the crowd at the center. Actually a thrill for everyone involved with the PBA. Including the very VALUABLE SPONSORS. Thanks for posting. I loved watching Walter Ray smack down Pete Weber. He was always the biggest, whiniest jerk on the Tour. I got Great joy watching the wheels fall off!!! 😀 When he got clean and sober he actually got worse!

I think that if Mark Roth hadn't have those health issues he would still be competing on the PBA TOUR

Nick Berg it may have been possible for him to compete in PBA50 or PBA Super Seniors but trying to bowl on the regular tour even a healthy Mark Roth would have problems because of age.

Walter Ray man! Guy is arguably the greatest 10 pin bowler ever. Plus a six time World Horseshoe pitching champion and a scratch golfer. The man's hand eye coordination is off that damn charts. Christ! He should take up darts. Guy would probably rule that sport too.

thecommish1976 yeah, match play can even kill the best bowlers, the extra 30 pins for a win with sixteen match play games can build up an insurmountable pins to make up.
