Description: Tool List and things needed are below.
This is how I changed my CV Axle on my 2002 Grand Caravan Sport Mini. Like all automotive work, it can be dangerous as the job requires you to remove tires and crawl under the van. So this video is for entertainment on how I changed my CV Axle. I am not a professional mechanic so if you decide to perform anything you see in this video you do it at your own risk and claim all liability associated with doing your own automotive repairs of any kind.
The Passenger Side is not edited yet, when it's done I'll post the link here.
The Garage Shade Tarp video is here: • Mechanics Carport Driv...
Part 1 is here: • 1996 to 2002 Caravan D...
Part 2 is here: • 1996 to 2002 Caravan D...
Part 3 is here: • 1996 to 2002 Caravan D...
So with that said here's the details of things I used to do the job.
Part Used:
- CV Drive Axle CarQuests or Advance Auto Part No. NCV12535 ~ $75.00.

Tools Used:
- 4" X 4" X 12" Block of wood or wheel chock.
- Jack Stand.
- 3/4" 3ft Pry Bar.

- Hydraulic jack capable of lifting your cars weight, I used a 2 1/4 Ton jack.
- Drip pan.
- Shop Rag.
- 3/4" x 3" x 18" Board for seating transmission seal.
Optional Tools Used:

It's easy to get frustrated with this guy because he took four videos to explain how to do this, but sometimes these extremely in-depth videos are helpful. If you've watched a more summarized video and are having trouble with one thing or another, you can go to a video like this and it can be priceless the information you receive. I didn't think about changing out the seals, for example. Thanks for the tip. I will do just that.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the kind words. I make the videos mostly for the beginner so I try to be very thorough and provide tons of tips I've learned over the years. I also make them for an experience mechanic who just needs a refresher on how to do this vehicle. Since this has to do with steering always triple check the bolts and torques to ensure it doesn't come undone going down the road. Hope your project goes well, and thanks for watching. You are the man. I watched your 4 part series on cv axle r&r and your explanation was the best. Mine was a 2006 chrysler town and country and It was the passenger side which is longer axle , couldn't figure out fully how to release the nut on the lower ball joint because the bolt was spinning with the nut , then I continued to watch your video and like you said it was simple as raising the Jack to apply a little pressure to the bottom of the bolt and that allowed me to loosen the nut the rest of the way. I appreciate you taking the time to make the video.👍👍👍👍

Hi Keith. A great "series". I found it very informative. In fact, I was just starting to look online about why my (drivers side)CV axle is leaking. I, like you, replaced my CV axle several years back. I can see that wet look around the CV axle like oil has been slowly leaking. When I replaced the axle, I didn't even know about the seal. After watching your video I learned several things. 1) That there is a seal around the CV axle where it goes into the trani and should be replaced when changing out the CV axle, 2) How to carefully & successfully remove the seal and 3) how to replace the old with a new seal. Wow. So much to digest, I'm full. Thanks so very much for taking a great deal of time to film, explain and edit this series. I for one give this a 2 thumbs up.

Wow Thanks, Gerry. I really appreciate being appreciated. LOL :O) Yeah I try to make sure those who watch my videos can get the most out of them. I hate it when I go to a video and it's pull this and put this in and you're done with no details. My videos can be quite long but by the time you finish them you should feel confident enough to do the job if you have any mechanical skills. Plus i'm almost always around to answer questions as I monitor my YT page several times a day. I suppose when my channel gets really big i'll have to hire staff to answer all my fan mail, Yeah Right. LOL. The thing that really USED to get me is when someone gave me a thumbs down on free videos to help them save money, and then didn't even have the courtesy to tell me what I did wrong. Now I just just laugh and say whatever, hope you have to go pay someone to do it. LOL. So I appreciate the Thumbs up comment, it made me feel good and chuckle. Seriously thanks for the nice comment and glad to help. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Keith your presentation was very very nice I'm 52 years old and I started out in auto mechanics when I was about maybe 10 I've had mechanics all around my way one used to work on police cars and several guys work with the hot rods and then I had some regular mechanics we had garages Outback of the house and a big driveway guys used to come out back and do extra work in the driveway and they showed me how to be a mechanic when I got in 2 high school and I went to Lincoln Technical Institute for automotive and diesel you remind me of some of my old school teachers and they were pretty much like you were very good mechanics so again your your presentation was very very nice I don't really remember you rambling much at all you have a very good video and you can understand it very well from the beginning to the end because I've been doing it for over 40 years I believe you will be truly blessed by giving information out to help someone well done thank you Keith

You're welcome Bluntz I loved most of the time I was in. I gave me the opportunity to go around the world 4 times and see most of the western world. I hope the seal replacement goes well. Replacing the seal on the passenger side it straight forward: Remove the CV Axle in the same process as the drivers side. Use a scraper to get behind the seal and pry it out with a medium hammer. Clean up the cup area and tap a new one in and then reinstall the CV axle in the reverse order of the drivers side. Hope the job goes well for you. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

You're welcome Lonny. There was a lot to cover to make sure whoever tries to do it would feel comfortable doing it. Changing a CV Axle is an extremely critical job as it involves steering and suspension components. So it's not for the inexperienced home mechanic unless they have someone who knows what they are doing to guide them. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I've been doing automotive work since I was around 15 years old. My dad was a mechanic and he showed me a lot on how to fix cars. He saved me a ton of money over the years. Again thanks for watching and the kind words. PS If you watched all 4 vids please give each of them a thumbs up. Since it probably had the same transmission (A670), I used your video for my Neon (Gen 1). I ended up removing the strut, but that was about the only real change from your method, which was very informative. I approached the seal bit with a bit of trepidation. It also took me about 45 minutes, but for different reasons. I used a seal puller to get the seal out, but the pocket in the transmission made that a little problematic. I would recommend taking a grinder to the long side of the puller and slicing off enough of it to get into the pocket. I ended up tearing through the seal in two or three places, so it was imperative that it came out. I also tried your method on installing the seal and boogered the edge a bit, but I was able to get it back into shape enough using the middle size ring from a Harbor Freight front end service kit, some light taps from a body hammer, and a bit of work with a pliers where the outer wall had bent inward a bit (I made the seal a bit oblong on the inner lip). I did about 30 miles today on the new axle and I'm seeing no leaks. My recommendation would be this: spend the money to get a seal driver kit.

Thanks Kevin it's nice to be appreciated. I know my videos are long, but I try to keep them detailed, with tool lists and parts as well as years the procedure may apply to. I do this to give a lot of good tips on: using tools, and doing the job right so that the repair lasts. I grew up helping my dad, who was a professional mechanic just outside Meridian Idaho in the 70's to early 80's. I'm not a professional mechanic, but I've learned a lot about cars. My actual trade in an electronics technician repairing Aircraft Test Sets. Any ways just wanted to say thanks for the complement. Fell free to ask anytime about any of my videos, or anything else. Keith, Thank you for providing this tutorial video series. From watching your videos (many times!) & those of a few others I was able to successfully replace the passenger side CV axle on my 2001 Caravan. As you already know but others may not, on the passenger side it is also necessary to remove the 10mm bolt that holds the ABS sensor in place to get it & its wiring out of the way. I had a Chilton manual to refer to but very seldom did I use it because the videos are much more instructional. I agree with you about not recommending this job to someone with no front-end repair experience unless they have a mechanic friend or relative nearby that will help them out .

Hi Keith, Do you have an OEM shop manual for the 2001 Caravan? I also need to replace the cooling fan relay but here is my situation: The fan relay definitely needs replacing on my 2001 Caravan because it has corroded so much the rivet end side of it broke off due to aluminum rot & I am also getting the proper CEL error code. However, I am not getting the constant 12V from the 40A fuse to the fan relay's Orange wire connection. The fuse is OK & the fuse's right side connection terminal on the underside plug has continuity from the fuse socket to the Orange wire. The Orange fan relay wire looks healthy (not discolored or hardened from being overheated) at the connector under the fuse box. Is there a junction box or a multi-pin connector between the 40A fuse terminal socket & the fan relay socket where oxidation may have occurred causing continuity loss? I could jumper a bypass wire directly from the underside fuse terminal to the relay socket but I prefer to fix it the correct way. I have a Chilton manual but it is very lacking in detail about the wiring harness. I used to repair electronics for a living so I am experienced with bad connections & wiring repairs. I can't afford the shop manual. Thanks for any advice. Mark

Hey Unkulmark. Wow I just saw this today. I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier, wasn't trying to ignore you. Sorry I don't have the shop manual. If you're experienced in circuit board repair you can remove the fuse box and disassemble it and clean or repair the damage, I did that on mine. I never made a video of it because I was new to YT then and didn't even think to do it. However if you think it is for sure the fuse box you could probably pick one up in the junk yard for parts. The one from the junk yard may work for you just by replacing it but you need to make sure it has the same number of fuses, relays and options etc. Hope this gets to in time. Again sorry I missed this comment. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya.

Excellent video Keith. Also, It's a good idea to use "anti-seize" on the wheel lugs. remember, YOU or your wife may be the next person trying to get this wheel off at 2 AM on the road with the puny lug wrench that comes with the car. it's torque that holds the nut on, not rust. My two boys have thanked me often for showing them what I've learned over the past 60 years. I wrote this for them: My dad gave me my first tool kit and told me I would learn from it He said "I'll show you what to do but the "hands-on must be done by you". From that day on I learned the way to teach the son I'd have some day. I passed the tool kit to my boys so they could fix their "big boy toys" But I was always there to see That they would do it just like me. Now my old bones are growing weak and all my joints just groan and creak. My son says "dad now I'm the kid, so you stand by like you always did". Now that all the work is done he tells me he's the grateful one. I give his back a friendly pat and ask "where did you learn all that" He said "when I was just a lad, I learned it all from you........., my dad.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 7 жыл бұрын
LOL on the rust, yep. Only problem with that is anti-seize acts like a lubricant that can make it hard to get the correct torque, not that I use a torque wrench anyways, without over stressing the studs. Most of the time I just use a wire brush, off camera, to clean off the studs before I install the lug nuts. If I were in high water situations a lot or using a 4 wheel drive off road regularly I would definitely use some anti-seize. Thanks for the comment bob, and watching. If you have anymore good ideas please pass them along. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith
@46fd04
@46fd04 5 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree with using anti-seize on wheel lug nuts. Due to its lubrication properties, lugs CANNOT be properly torqued if anti-seize is applied. If wheels are rotated regularly, and the lugs are torqued to spec (95 ft/lbs for most Caravans), the lugs will EASILY come off using the "puny" emergency wrench supplied by Dodge. Over-torqued lugs are difficult to remove. Properly torqued lugs are easy to remove.

Thanks for the nice comment. It should work pretty much the same. The book has you disconnect the strut . I don't do that because I don't like to pay $100.00 dollars to get a front alignment. I think I mention this in the video series somewhere. When you go to put the CV Axles in, If you have any troubles, it's a good idea to pack the inside retention ring area with some grease, center the ring then tap it in normally. Read the comments for one of my videos I made while doing the passenger side when I had troubles getting it in, Here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5eXhtufqJydh4E.html . Hope it works out for you too. PS now's a good time to do the Wheel Hub Bearing too, they cost around $100.00 dollars for Timkens, (the best), or around $40.00 bucks for some cheap Chinese ones. I put two cheap ones on the drivers side in about two years so I guess that lets you know you get what you pay for. Feel free to ask any questions. I check my page several times a day. Thank you for your super helpful videos! Do you have one for stuck jam nut on tie rod ends? My understanding of the inner tie rod ends is they are held in with red loctite, and shouldn't be unscrewed to align vehicle, yet Auto zone guide shows rotating them then readjusting boot. Hmm .. One concern, my service Manual for my 1996 had dire warnings against putting weight of vehicle on hubbearings without axle spindle torqued. Said it would make them fail.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 4 жыл бұрын
Some very GOOD questions! First some EXTREMELY important safety advice! Steering is a Critical part of a vehicle and if done improperly can get you or others on the road killed or severely injured. If you're not familiar with steering components, don't do it, get someone to help you who is knowledgeable with it or have a professional do it. It's not worth the risk! When you get someone to help you who's familiar with it. Or as a minimum at least have them do a safety inspection before you drive it. I have two videos on how I changed the Inner & Outer Tie Rod ends. Alignment should be done by a professional to ensure good tire wear or at least a safety check. On to answering your questions. Here they are. - Part 1: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5ddo9V_qLGllok.html - Part 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM-DYNx5v9DNoH0.html The Book is correct & AutoZone are correct. On that the end of the Inner Tie rod end there is a built in End Nut screws into the steering ram. On that same end is a ball joint that can be turned or rotated to adjust the overall Tie Rod length. Adjusting the Inner Tie Rod end MUST be done AFTER the Inner Tie Rod "End Nut" is Lock tight screwed in and Torqued down, otherwise it could unscrew, meaning if you unscrewed the Nut that screws into the Hydraulic Steering Ram it could come out and cause a crash. But after you tighten it down, then you can rotate/move the Inner Tie Rod, that has the ball end pressed into it. You unscrew the rod to point the tires inward and screw it in to point the tires outward. Watch Both Videos and I think you'll understand why both the book and AutoZone's instructions are correct. Thanks Dana, there should be little to no differences in most front wheel drive systems. I've owned three Dodges and although they ride very nice mechanically they have been maintenance hogs. I called this Caravan the "Fix it again Van". Once they hit about 120-130 thousand miles they go to crap for medium distance driving. I drove mine 100 miles a day and had to fix something on it every two weeks. From door locks, to window regulators to brakes you name it, I had to fix something just to go to work. That's why there are so many videos on it on my Channel. I must say that the Caravan videos actually paid for all the repairs I did including a $1,200.00 dollar transmission I installed my self. I Have a ton more that I haven't even put up. Anyways thanks for watching. Best wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

great video, thanks. is the passenger side much different? I'm doing my passenger side cv in my 01 caravan today?

Hi Levi, the passenger side is even easier. Where the CV Axle goes into the transmission there's a little round tab that sticks out towards the front of the transmission and you can get the pry bar easily between the axle to pry it out. Other than that it's the same. Also the seal is 100 times easier to get out, and since it's only about $9.00 dollars you might as well change it while your in there. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask questions I check my YT channel several times a day. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Very good video Keith. Step by step and easy to follow. My 2002 probably needs axles replaced. Yet it doesn't click on cornering. It is smooth as you accelerate gently. But if you accelerate kind of hard you get a thump, thump, thump until you ease the gas pedal. Sound comes from passenger side. You think it's time to do both cv axles?

Check your passenger motor mount. I have a video on how to change it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbihq7RpzNqYgYU.html. I would also check your lower ball joint and most suspension components on that side. There is also the left transmission mount under the van right under the middle of the grill, some call it the (Front Engine Mount) even though it attaches to the transmission. Hope that points you in the right direction. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Hi Dave, I assume you mean the trans-axle/transmission fluid? If that's the case you have to remove the square looking pan on the bottom of the transmission. Unfortunately Dodge/Chrysler didn't put a drain plug in the pan, like most car manufactures. When you pull it loosen them only then pull all of the back bolts then pry the lowest part down and the fluid will gush out. Make sure your pan is large enough to cover the whole are around the lower part of the pan or you'll get it all over your driveway. Have some Kitty Litter and a large towel you don't care about handy. You'll also need the correct fluid for your transmission, it should be marked on the transmission dip stick or listed in the service manual. If you don't have a service manual look it up on line or pick one up at your local automotive parts store when you pick up the new seal and transmission filter. I hope this answers your question. If you need any more advice feel free to ask as I check my channel several times a day. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya PS one word of advice. If you have NOT normally flushed your transmission it's a very BAD idea to have one flushed, so ONLY change the fluid then and don't flush it. Flushing an old transmission that has not regularly been flushed breaks loose all the old glazed particles and releases them into your shifting valves, which then causes them to stick, requiring you to get your transmission rebuilt. how do you to figure out what side cv axle needs to be replaced, what do you look for or listen to?
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 7 жыл бұрын
When driving slowly and going around a corner if you're tuning right and you get a rumble or clicking sound in the left wheel then the left CV Axle could be bad or the left Wheel Hub Bearing could be bad as well. The same goes for the left hand turn, if you hear a rumble or clicking sound on the right side then the right CV Axle or Wheel Hub Bearing could be bad. Basically when turning if the sound is coming from the opposite side, you problem is ussually on that side. You can also raise the vehicle and use the wheel to check the amount of slop. Hold the inside CV Joint by the transmission and then rotate the wheel. This will cause the CV Axle to twist back and forth. There should be little to no play when you twist the axle. If it clunks or you see a lot of twist the axle is bad. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Keith Noneya thank you very helpful. about the wheel hub how do i go about checking that out or the ball joints? because when i turn the wheel it sounds like a rubbing sound or squeaking sound. i belive i might have more then one problem.(if it matters the Struts were changed about a year ago, after that is when i started to notice the difference and sounds)
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 7 жыл бұрын
Jack the car up on the side you suspect and grab the wheel on the top and bottom. Move the top and bottom in and out. If you have a clunk the wheel bearings could be bad. Also check take a look at the tie rod ends while you wiggle the wheel front to back. If you see play on the tie rod ends then they'll need to be replaced. The ball joints are pretty much the same way. Turn the wheel left or right while watching the lower ball joints if they move or clunk outside of the pivot point then they're probably bad. Don't forget to use your repair manual like the Chiltens or Haynes as they have a lot of tips on how to test those parts as well. Feel free to ask more questions if needed. I will caution you on, if you're not familiar with working on steering and brakes get someone who is to help you. These are serious safety related items that if go bad or break while driving can cause you or others on the road serious or deadly harm. You can also take the care to most automotive places for an inspection that is often free or for a small fee that is well worth your safety. Again feel free to ask more questions as needed. More information is always good and don't be shy. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

Question.....there are hints that say put on a dab of grease in the clip of the shaft, where it enters the transmission....this grease tends to keep the clip more "centered" and makes for easier insertion.. Then there is this question--> a lot of mechanics say orient the clip with the open end straight up. Seems to keep it even *more* centered....plus my own Toyota manual (oddly) says to have the open end pointed straight down. Odd.... but maybe a 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position seems to do the same thing as to proper orientation...and works better than random orientation or even if the opening is at 9 or 3 o'clock...as this seems to push the clip out more to one side....anyone here care to comment ?????

I normally point it any direction, but in the future I'll be pointing it down. I think this is best because gravity wants to push the ring down. In order for the ring to fit in the hole it has to fit in the beveled area on the inside of the transmission. Having the gap on the bottom means less of the ring will be outside of that beveled area. If you have the Factory Manual on the vehicle, unless you know it to be wrong, always go by the Manufactures Service Manual. This is because they know what works best to save their mechanics time and money, and to have a reliable repair. There's no real limit to the grease as long as it's only in the area of the ring. I hope that answers your questions. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

I have a 2006 Town country I have this shake and under acceleration only I wouldn't say that I am a mechanic but I would say , I'm very knowledgeable pretty also do everything in mechanics but I got to tell you this shaking has gotten me I've done the whole front end I've done the motor mounts it's still shakes under acceleration only it does not shake when you let off the gas could it be the CV axles it runs like a kitten when it's idling but the minute you go to give it gas that's that shake again
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya Жыл бұрын
Put the van in neutral and raise the RPMs and see if starts the shaking again. If it does then it's engine related. If it doesn't put the van in the road and point it in a safe direction and press moderately hard on the brake, put the van in drive and step on the gas slowly raising the RPM to 1,500-2,000 RPM's. If it starts to shake it's again engine related, if it doesn't then it's CV Axles or Suspension related. If it's engine related, it could be low fuel pressure under load, clogged fuel filter in the tank or on the frame could cause starvation and that can cause some surging. A bad fuel injector or even a Coil Pack breaking down under load can cause that as well. If you have a OBDII Scanner you can check for codes, like miss fires. You can also check it for a bad injector code, I had that on one of my cars and I had to change the injector. Hope that points you in the right direction. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Keith..without the luxury of having a torque,. a good mechanic can "feel" when fastener has bottomed out.

LOL, True for the most part, but there are some things I don't fudge on, like the wheel axle/hub nut and engine components like head bolts, Rods end caps, timing chain things and mostly even exhaust manifolds. Yeah I know I did fudge a little on the hub nut but at 150 plus pounds it's still good, but my calibrated foot isn't that good so I use the torques wrench to get me close. Thanks for the comment Bob. Feel Free to ask any questions, I monitor my page regularly. Keith

All you need to remove is the axle nut, the brakes and strut to steering knuckle bolts. No need to remove anything else!
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 4 жыл бұрын
If you remove the strut bolts from the steering Knuckle you'll have to do a front end alignment because removing the bolts will effect the camber. After reinstalling the bolts even the slightest change in placement will affect the camber, and an improperly adjusted camber can effect tire wear and steering in cornering. I know this first hand, so to save time and the added cost of having to do the front end alignment, it's easier and less expensive to just pop the lower ball joint and swing it out of the way. So although you can do it your way there IS something else needed doing it your way. More money and an extra step, the front end alignment. I've been working on cars for over 30 years and several professional mechanics have also mentioned to me they never thought of doing it my way, to save time and money, until they saw my video. One thing I've learned over the years is that no two mechanics will do the job the same way. Always to do the job the way you see fit to do it; safely, on time and the least expensive way for the customer. Thanks for the comment, I do get this comment from time to time. @@keithnoneya I replaced the struts on my van a few years ago and also did the axles. I also just looked it up in my shop manual to make sure. All you need to do is Mark the cam bolt so you put it back in the correct orientation. It does recommend having the alignment checked but I personally didn't have any issues.
@keithnoneya
@keithnoneya 4 жыл бұрын
@@kansasgardener5844 Yep agree, the manual does tell you to do it that way, and it is one way to do it. Personally I think they talked to the manual writers so the customer would have to pay to get the front end alignment done afterwards. Marking it does help, and most of the time you can get it right, but in the off chance something goes wrong, you will have to do the added time and expense and get it aligned. Now you know a trick for the next time if you choose to use it. Thanks for watching KG. I hope the video was helpful to you or the person you helped. If so please consider giving it a thumbs up. Always feel free to comment positively or negatively, I've learned a few things from my viewers, and that is what my channel is ALL about. Helping, Sharing, teaching and learning.
