Description: Tool List and things needed are below.
This is how I changed my CV Axle on my 2002 Grand Caravan Sport Mini. Like all automotive work, it can be dangerous as the job requires you to remove tires and crawl under the van. So this video is for entertainment on how I changed my CV Axle. I am not a professional mechanic so if you decide to perform anything you see in this video you do it at your own risk and claim all liability associated with doing your own automotive repairs of any kind.

So with that said here's the details of things I used to do the job.
Part Used:
- CV Drive Axle CarQuests or Advance Auto Part No. NCV12535 ~ $75.00.
- Trans-axle Seal Drive Works Part No. S-3459. Other possible part numbers are: Timken TM3459S, ATP TO-55, CHR 15835, CR15835, 24-11-1-205-984, 90311-40002, 15835CHR, 40X58X10, R03863, P40X58X8. Always check part numbers before you purchase them. Approx. $6.00 to $14.00.
Tools Used:
- 4" X 4" X 12" Block of wood or wheel chock.
- Jack Stand.
- 3/4" 3ft Pry Bar.
- 12" Flat Carpenters Pry Bar or Carpenters Nail Puller.
- 1/2" Drive Torque Wrench capable of 150 to 180 ftlb's.
- 1/2" Breaker Bar.
- Large 4-5 lb. hammer.
- 1/2" 32mm Deep Socket.
- 18mm Combination Wrench.
- 17mm or 19mm combination Wrench.
- Large Needle Nose Pliers.
- Lug-nut Wrench.
- Repair Manual for your vehicle, for torque specs.
- Hydraulic jack capable of lifting your cars weight, I used a 2 1/4 Ton jack.
- Drip pan.
- Shop Rag.
- 3/4" x 3" x 18" Board for seating transmission seal.
Optional Tools Used:
- 18mm Ratchet Combination Wrench.
- 3ft x 5ft carpet or kiddy mat.
Consumables Used:
- Paper Towels.
- Brake Cleaner.
- Multi-Purpose Grease.
- Penetrating Oil.
- Automatic Transmission Fluid for your van.

I had to laugh at my favourite tool. A nail puller/ hydraulic lifter puller/ plastic trim clip and seal removal tool. And I'm sure another dozen uses over the years. Good job.

Thanks for the video! Taking out that CV axle is a pain in the butt! Spent nearly $50 on an assortment of pry tools at harbor freight when the one I had didn’t make it budge; None of them worked! Ended up using a straight chisel and a 4lb hammer underneath and gave it about 3 wacks to break it loose. I was nearly at the end of the road had it not been for that chisel! At any rate, good video!

Hey Lucho, thanks for the nice comment, Glad it helped. Yea sometimes they are a real bugger to get out. If I have to do another one buried in a seal ring, I think i'll put and exhaust clamp on it and then use that to pry against it to get the CV out. Thanks for watching. Best Wishes n Blessings. When are you going to make a video on the passenger side CV axle?

Hey Lucho, I'm not planning on doing it anytime soon. But don't worry the passenger side is just like the drivers side but A LOT easier. It's easier because the CV Shaft is not recessed into the transmission and it has a bump tab to aid in the shaft removal. Also the seal lip is not recessed either and just a small sharp screw driver or a scraper can easily lift the edge so it can be removed. So just follow the drivers side video and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. I do have some video material on it and maybe one day I'll piece it all together into a video for it, but trust me if you can do the drivers side, the passenger side is a piece of cake! Did you have to remove the drop link from the strut having to realign the vehicle?

Great Question, No I don't do it by the book just for that very reason. I always disconnect the Lower Ball Joint, and the Tie Rod Nut and slip them out. That way no alignment is necessary when putting it back together. It's a trick my dad taught me and he was a professional mechanic. Hope that helps. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Excellent Video Keith. I would only add that "anti-seize" should be applied to the lug nuts when replacing the wheel. YOU or your wife just may be the one changing that flat on the road at 2 AM with the puny tools supplied with the car. Contrary to popular belief, it's torque, not rust that holds the lug nuts on.

They drywall screw trick probably would have made it easier to get the seal out

Yep it works pretty well, but I don't like drilling the hole in the metal, because of possible metal shavings getting into the transmission. I suppose I could have just used a real seal puller or used a drill to try and see if the screw would go in without a pilot hole. Thanks for the tip. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Can you tell me what size the bolts are for the CV axel joint? I need 6 but can't find the actual size

Hi Brittany, I'm a little confused about which bolts you need. As far as I know there are no bolts on the actual CV Axle, there is a big nut that holds it tight onto the hub, but there is only two of those. If you mean the bolts on the round cover I don't remember pulling them off. If you could give me a time index in my video I could try and find out for you. I just bought a 2000 Dodge caravan....and they replaced the Passenger side Axle 3 times and It keeps popping off....do you have any suggestions on why it keeps popping off

Ok i'll stay up for a few to see if we can't get to the bottom of this. Could you explain "Popping off" in a little more detail? - The axle comes out, - the axle breaks, - the joint separates etc. Also can you explain who the "They" is? a professional mechanics shop, a friend etc. Keith

The lady I bought the car from says it keeps popping out so Im guess the Axle thats goes into the transmission keeps coming out...

There's a lock ring that is supposed to hold it in. They can pop out if the ring is worn or the groove in the transmission is worn too. Also if the axle is rebuilt by a none professional it can be out of balance and want to walk out. Other things to look at are the motor mounts. Having a CV axle pop out is definitely not the norm. The last think I can think of is if the bushings on the lower control arm are worn and are allowing the whole assembly to move back and forth and with the road vibration it's causing the inner ring to pop loose. So here's a list of things to have your mechanic check. 1. Lower control arm bushings. 2. Transmission mount bushings. 3. The condition of the CV axle retaining ring. Unfortunately to check this you may have to remove the CV axle it self, then you would have to know what to look for. 4. Quality of the axle, is it used, a professionally re-manufactured with the balance checked? These are just guesses of the things that I can think of. I've been doing automotive repairs for over 30 years but I don't do it for a living, it's a hobby out of necessity so I can go to work. Fortunately I got a raise and was able to replace the van with a 2014 Nissan. It had 42K milles on it but for me that's just breaking in. All my vehicles have well over 200K miles on them. I'm gonna hit the sack, have to get up early. I'll check for any replies in the morning. One last thought I would take a short video of it and post it with the title. "Why does my CV Axle pop out"? 2000 Dodge Caravan. This should give your problem some more attention. I've heard of them happening before but it has never happened to me. Best Wishes n Blessings. Is the passenger side as easily as the driver side All the same steps Or is the passenger side harder sir

The passenger side is WAY easier. The step are almost exactly the same, except the shaft is easier to pull out because there's a tab to get behind the CV joint next to the transmission. Goodmorning brother had one more question I replaced my passenger cv axle It went pretty easy like you said... I feel like I have it set in place n all the way in... My question is when I have both sides of the front of my van Drivers side n passenger jack up N turn my engine on Put it in driver Should both tires be spinning Driver side doesn't turn with in gear Passenger side does...

@@deadnuttsfosho It depends on the differential installed. To my knowledge both should be turning. Try stepping lightly on the brakes and then try it again. Then both should definitely turn.

@@keithnoneya ty I did jack my car up just 2 see if both was turning it was..I know the passenger side is the main drive and turns the driver side .... So I'm guessing on my van I must not have the cv axle all the way in Time to try n beat it in another 1/4... ty again brother for taking time out your day for the information Hope you shall have a great day...peace n monkey gresse

Like some, you were fortunate that your Cvjoint hub had those lips, to jar the pry bar against. Otherwise, you'd have greater difficulty as I am facing now. Sure wish yours had no lips, to see just how you'd remedy that.

Okay but why did you already have it ready and then film? it would have been better if you filmed the actual process instead of prying it off camera and then filming it coming off like 123..
