I stumble my way through replacing the lock actuator for the left rear door of a 2000 Ford Expedition XLT. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment. Good luck and happy wrenching!

The tip about cutting off the old rod saved me a bunch of time. Thanks Steve and Mediocre Mechanic for posting the video. Fortunately or unfortunately my rivet was already sheared or previously drilled out so that may have been my problem to start with. Replaced the actuator anyway and the big rivet tool from Harbor Freight and one of the included 1/4"x1/2" rivets worked like a champ. I'm happy to have that right rear lock fixed to I don't have to stretch anymore.

You don't need to drill out the rivet that holds the actuator mounting bracket. Just use a large screwdriver to spread one side of the bracket open and the actuator will slide out. The new actuator will slide back into the bracket the same way. That was in the instructions that came with my new actuator. Also, I found it much easier if you use a dremel tool to cut the metal rod on the end of the actuator about an inch from where it's held in the grommet. You can just remove the old actuator and pivot the cut piece of rod out of the grommet. No need to pull all of it outside the door. To install, put the new rod in the grommet inside the door, put the new actuator in the door and pop the rod into the actuator. Then slide it into the mounting bracket. No need to drill out any rivets. Thanks for your video. It was very helpful!

This approach sounds great. Preserving the rivets prevents you from having to get a hold of a heavy-duty riveter or rig up a solution like I did in the video. The most frustrating part of this project was removing the actuator in one piece (so I would be sure to be able to install the new one the same way), so if you can save yourself some time by cutting the old one out, then all the better. Thanks for the tips!

@@saulcarrera6509 Do you still need to remove the exterior door handle and remove the manual lock rivet when you are just going to cut the rod?
@saulcarrera65093 жыл бұрын
@@monteserick no not at all.. I just cut the rod.. Didn't do anything to the handle or rivet's..

Thank you so much. That was so easy. And I was able to spread the bracket with a screwdriver instead of drilling the rivet. I also didn't have to cut the rod with a Dremel. I managed to get it worked out.

lovely video. didn’t realize it’d be this hard though, I was super excited until I heard I’d need to drill, and then Steve Harward says that you don’t even need to drill, but I’ll have to cut the metal rod with a tool. I think if I can get my hands on a quarter inch bolt and locking nut, AND a small metal cutting tool, then I’ll be able to pull this off.

My locks wok but neithrtcrear door cab be opened from inside (yes child locks are off). But your video gives a good look into the mechanism, which should help diagnose my problem.

I followed these steps to the best of my ability with my stepdads help, however my stepdad wanted to make sure that everything was working so without bothering to put the paneling back on we just reattached the handles without it and when we closed the door now we can't get it to open back up. Any suggestions as to what would cause that door to not open back up from the inside or outside? It is unlocked supposedly and the child lock appears to be off as well so we are unsure why it won't open now. At least now our battery isn't dying from the door not shutting correctly lol

I used the Threaded Insert Riveter Kit from Harbor Freight: www.harborfreight.com/45-piece-threaded-insert-riveter-kit-1210.html Worked like a charm!
