Great video coming from an ASE mechanic. You made this so informative that any basic person without basic automotive knowledge could easily repair their vehicle. I wish more people who do videos was as informative as yours has been. Everyone watching could easily take it apart. A little basic soldering skills and you have fixed your vehicle with very little money.... big WIN.....

This was perfect for this problem. Saved me $1000.00. $150.00 part and $ 900.00 for Ford to program the new cluster. Whoever you are thanks a bunch.

That was an official quote. You could probably find someone to program it for less than 900 but the dealer, as usual, tryst to take advantage of their mistakes in manufacturing.

Excellent Video. My 2001 Expedition has needed this for a long time. Dealership wanted an arm and 2 legs to install a new cluster instead of repair of old one. Now it will be able to show my 330,000 miles I have on the odometer!! yipppeee.

Thanks for the video! I have a 2001 F150 that I have had since it was brand new. Sometimes my odometer would work, and sometimes it doesn't. I followed your instructions and it has seemed to work perfectly. I'm 500 miles away from rolling 300k miles, and now I know I will be able to watch it pass that mark! Thanks again!

This video was the most helpful. My 2001 F150 is the same. It is not necessary to take anything loose outside of the instrument cluster area. The best part, for me, was the clips holding the shift indicator. Also, the headlight cluster can be removed easily by taking off the knob, reversing it, and using it as it's own removal tool. Just turn the knob to the left, and it releases the small cluster.

Excellent video, Thanks a ton man. Did it on my 2000 F-150. Couldn't tell which joint was cold on the cluster so I heated then added solder on both ends just in case Success! Extra thanks for showing the ENTIRE process on camera even on the parts that seem impossible to do without two hands.

This video was immensely helpful. We did exactly this fix on our 2001 Expedition. The shop wanted to replace the odometer for $200! Instead it took us an hour to remove it, solder, and replace. Essentially no $$ for a couple drops of solder! Thank you!

I did this repair on a 2000 Navigator. Very easy. No need to take the center panel off or screws out. No need to loosen the lower panel either. The trim panel under the cluster pops out, 7 screws hold in the instrument panel trim, and that's it. Pop out the light switch, disconnect the wiring on the instrument panel trim piece, four screws hold the instrument cluster in, pop off the gear shift indicator (as shown) undo the wiring in the back and out it comes. Takes less than 1/2 hour. Another 1/2 hour to solder the two pins, put it all back together and that's it.

Just fixed my 1999 Expedition's odometer! Thanks for the video brother. Good music playing too. Only 181,057 miles on it and running strong. It took about 2 hours. I buffed the clear plastic lens with Flitz while I was at it. I used my compressor to blow out the dust. Looks like new. I had 6 screws that were 1/4" longer than the rest. I realized this after removing em. I put them where it looked like they were likely needed... like where two pieces of plastic overlap. One HUGE Tip.... Go out and get yourself a 9/32 MAGNETIC TIP driver bit... I used my drill/ driver with a non magnetic tip. If you can find a longer one and its magnetic... even better. It will cost maybe $5 bucks and save you some frustration having screws fall behind a panel. Luckily I have a magnetic "screw grabber" in my garage. Got used three times. lol

This is a great video how to to fix this issue. Every step is included and ecspecially usefull is the instuctions on dropping the selector display. Be aware the circuit board solder terminals are much smaller than they appear in the video however. I have done some soldering and have a proffessional grade soldering pen but I was extremely nervous doing this soldering as it would be very east to bridge joints or lift traces(overheating) on the board. I found 3 definetly cracked pins so I repaired them all using very minimal apllication of solder. What I found worked best was to dab a bit of liquid flux to the joint with a Q tip, tin the point of the pen with a drop of solder and then shake most of it off. Use of flux is very important as it will reactivate the old solder.It should not even look like a drop of solder on the end of the pen but should be fully tinned. Touch the tip to the old pin and let the flux do it's magic. It will be properly repaired if the new joint is bright and shiny. If you have a strong magnifier use it and when you look at it you'll know if you got it right. Alternatively, if you have a good electronics repair shop handy or a friend who is an experienced hobbyist, you might want to farm it out.This job woud not be difficult for such a person, but if you have absolutely no experiece soldering this might not be a good project to practice on.After all you've done most of the work just getting the display out! Mine came out great but I have poor eyesight and although my joints came out perfect I was really stressed doing the soldering.Like I said the pins were much smaller than I anticipated. By the way I have a 2002 f150 and the display works perfect now. Many thanks to the maker of the video.

Also, its a good idea to check all of the bulbs plugged into that circuit board while you've got the unit out. Just check circuit continuity across each bulb to make sure they're not burned out - super easy once you've done the work to remove the unit.

Thanks for the info on how to fix this issue, my mom's F150 lariat had this problem. I ended up having to tear the whole dash apart because it was obvious the previous owner had been in there before and a bunch of other things had to be fixed in the process. Though I was pretty pissed when I got it back together and noticed that one of the speedometer lamps had gone out, so half of the speedometer is dark at night meh. The bulbs looked sad (the glass was coated in metal from the filament sputtering) when I had the module apart and in hindsight I should have changed them out with LEDs. I'll have to tear it apart again sometime in the future when I have a day or two to mess with it.

ONE IMPORTANT THING GUYS: I have the actual Ford Expedition Shop Manual, I get the "real ones" for all of my cars. FORD MAKES A HUGE DEAL ABOUT HOW TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY SO THE POSSIBILITY OF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYING DOESN'T HAPPEN. Their instructions: Disconnect negative from the battery, Disconnect the positive. THERE IS A 3 MINUTE BACKUP CHARGE ON THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. Wait 3 minutes, then go to work on your electrical issue. Good luck!
@garymarch4711
@garymarch4711 8 жыл бұрын
+Chad Stout great point... Yeah, take it from a firefighter... airbags suck when they deploy in your face when you don't expect it to. Theyll send you flying. Wait a few minutes after disconnecting the battery. The guys at the Ford dealership (Ive got friends there) say they generally use a 10 minute rule.
