Thanks for the video! Who would have thought it could be so easy? Toughest thing was finding my feeler guages. Cart starts right up now... I was completely flummoxed by this problem... no MORE!

Its a pretty simple procedure. As long as you pay attention and take your time. This is a routine maintenance item in the EZGO manual.

I have a 93 ezgo marathon with a similar start issues. Cranks and turn and will eventually take off. I've tried adjusting the valves and cleaning the carb. Replaced the air, oil and fuel filters and added a new fuel pump. Also new spark plugs. Compression test was good with between 140 and 165 compression. Any other ideas?

I enjoyed the video, it's very interesting and has helped me to do the basics. I'm having a tough time with my ez go backfiring on startup. My 8 yr old granddaughter thinks I can fix anything. I tryed coil ,carb,battery, fuel,and filter. I think Emma just needs a new Grampa. Any suggestions will help.Thanks.

Adjust your valves. The intake valves fall out of adjustment and get stuck open. This will cause hard starting and/or backfiring.

I have a 1996 ezgo txt. I needs half choke to get it going. Did a compression test it I had a bout 90 on each cylinder. Adjusted the valves and got up to about 91-93 on each cylinder. Still has the same problem. What should I check next?

I have a 1998 g2 Yahma golf cart, I adjusted the valves I ran it a little with the valve cover off there no oil coming to the valve lifers. Is there a pump that pumps the oil up to them? I like your videos keep them coming.

The Yamaha engines are "splash lubricated" meaning there is a tail on the bottom of the connecting rod that "splashes" oil inside the crankcase. Enough oil makes it to the top to keep all of that lubricated.

Kevin, Great video. I have this same cart and it starts pretty easily with choke. The issue that I am having is that if you give it too much gas it bogs down like it’s flooded. Sometimes its runs better than others. I have replaced the air box, air filter, spark plugs and fuel filter. Any ideas where to look next? Should I look at the valves? Thanks in advance.

Great video!! Just got a fresh rebuild on a 2000 ez-go st 350. Backfires or spits back through carb. Could valves not been adjusted correctly? I cleaned carb and replaced fuel line with fresh fuel. Only spits back at low rpm.

Its possible the valves are our of adjustment. Its also possible the timing is off. If the timing is good, then adjust the valves to .006".

The timing belt is easy to change but first, did you diagnose it as a timing issue? I would first start with the easy stuff. Is the battery connected in the correct polarity? I see this more often than you would think. Do you have spark? Is the fuel pump pumping? Is the carburetor clean? I would start here by removing, cleaning and reassembling the carb. Check compression in each cylinder and adjust the valves if needed. If compression is below 100PSI, then you will have a hard start or no start at all. While you have the valve cover off, manually roll the engine over (do not crank the engine with the starter) and see if the valves are opening and closing. This will tell you if the timing belt is broke. The timing belt is behind the black cover next to the clutch. You will need to remove the clutch to gain access to this cover. (in this video, the cover is to the left of the valve cover).

My EZgo feels like it has no power , won’t climb small hills , when you stop then push gas to go it hardly moves for a few seconds then slowly starts going . And backfires . Any ideas

Great video. Bought a 2002 ezgo. Ran. Next day wouldn’t start. Had spark. Had gas (was pooling up I. Air cleaner box). Took off carb. No dirt in bowl. Ordered new carb. Should I adjust valves before buying compression tester???

You can do either. As long as you have a feeler gauge, you can adjust the valves. The EZGO manual calls for a valve adjustment on a yearly basis. A compression tester will tell you if you have issues with the cylinder as a whole.

Kevin's Golf Carts took the carb of per your video. The needle thing that the float moves up and down had a crumbling rubber tip. Installed new carb. Checked compression. 30 and 90psi. Did valve job ( on lobes) .006. Now it has 180 and 190psi. One thing- the China carb, when installed, did not open throttle blade all the way. I did some linkage adjustments. Perfect. Thank you! Keep the videos coming. Was I correct to use feelers on lobes? You’ve done it both ways. Thx again.

Is it .004 or .006 on the valve adjustment on a 350 robin? Trying to check mine for rhe first time. Got 90lbs in both cylinders trying to see if I can get it better. Just got the cart couple days ago but got it running and driving on the 90lbs of compression but would love to get it better if its just a valve issue. Thanks in advance

Hello, I have the same problem and did exactly what you did to the T, but still the same problem. Any other ideas? Cranks over but still no go. I have a 1998 that hasn't been beaten.

Have you done any other diagnostics? I will need a bit more information before I can suggest what to do next as you may have other issues. Have you checked for spark? Its possible the carburetor is blocked or fuel pump is not getting fuel to the carb.

Hello,trying to do this for this first time. In this video, you put the feeler gauge under the adjusting screws, by in another video, I saw them put the feeler gauge between the lifter and cam? Just want to make sure I do this right. Thanks

I used the feeler gauge between the valve and rocker. It can be done this way but you should feel between the rocker and camshaft for better accuracy. EZGO calls for .004" but in severe-duty use, I've used .006" with no issues for many, many years.

Is adjusting valves as easy as you make it look. ? What type[brand[ is your compression tester? I have a 1997 TXT EZ-Go gas that I have changed the following parts on and still won't start. Battery, Fuse[learned that from your video]drive belt, ignition coils,plugs,air filter, fuel pump and filter/ Any suggestions????

Anything can look easy while watching someone else do it, haha. My compression tester is an Innova 3614 Compression Tester that I purchased on Amazon. It sounds like your valves are out of adjustment or a blocked carburetor. Adjusting the valves is fairly simple. Its easy for me to say this as I have been doing it this way for 10+ years. One thing to keep in mind is you need to have a compression tester for this test. It will tell you a lot about the engine and how its behaving. If you have a blocked carburetor, nothing else will work since the engine is not getting fuel. You will need to remove it, take it apart, clean it and reassemble. Most of the time its just a dirty carb.

Hello, I have a question & hope I can get your response. I have a 2002 EZ-GO TXT Shuttle. It ran great but recently we had some family over and while I was off fishing they took it for a ride. 6 full grown adults in total, to make the story short now my EZ-GO runs at a top speed of 8-10 miles and wont even go up hill. Any suggestions on what it can be?

If it starts and runs as normal, its possible that the drive belt, the larger one connecting the engine to the rear differential, is wore out. Usually this happens with heavy use and the cart being overloaded. Keep in mind, quality belts are made of Kevlar, steel and rubber. The clutch faces are usually aluminum. When a golf cart is overloaded, the engine has to work harder, the drive belt works harder and wears faster and same goes true for both clutches. Typically the drive clutch, the one on the engine, wears faster. Take a look at the belt. it should be about 1 1/8 inches wide. if its 1 inch or less, you will suffer performance loss. The belts are considered "consumable" so they need to be changed after a period of time. This will depend heavily on use. Also look at the clutches. The face where the belt rides will have grooves cut into it. This is normal and should be somewhat smooth. If you see or feel ridges that are very deep, then it is also time to replace those. I hope this helps.

Hey Kevin, are you still active? I just picked up a 97, pretty much the same issue as this, and when it does get going its God awful slow. Like, 5-7mph maybe. When it does run, there is zero torque, if you get on an incline, it just shuts off essentially. Any other common issues? I will check the valves. Also, how do you crank the speed up on these?

I changed spark plugs. One was fouled and the other was dirty. Only 1 was firing. Only problem I had with mine. It would barely go when I floored it, and any sort of incline, it wouldn't climb.

What size socket do you use on the spark plugs? I've tried a 5/8" and a 3/4" spark plug socket and none seem to fit

have you ever considered using a solenoid from a car or lawn mower. will do same job and a lot cheaper than buggy spares

Car and lawn mower solenoids are not rated for continuous duty like ones used on golf carts.

Ok, so during this procedure, one of the 10mm nuts on top of the adjustment screw became loose, fell off, then down into the crankcase. What’s the best way to get it out? Please help!

Remove the oil filter (3 10mm bolts) located by the primary clutch. Drain the oil into a clean catch container and see if the nut came out. If not, once the oil drains out, reach inside the hole with a magnetic reach tool. If it fell through the holes, it should be in the bottom of the crank case. You will have to rotate the engine by hand very slowly to ensure the nut isn't on the crankshaft.

This is going to be a little difficult to explain with out a visual helper. The cam shaft gear has 3 holes. Align the center hole to the 12 o'clock position, with the square notch at the top of the back plate. The lower, drive gear, align the keyway with the hole above the gear. I hope this helps.

Check all of your connections and make sure they are clean and strong. Weak or dirty connections can cause a lot of issues. Make sure the battery is connected with the correct polarity. The black cable goes to positive and the bare, braided cable goes to negative and the vehicle chassis ground. I've seen this issue more than you might think. There are 3 components that create spark, the igniter which is located under the cover where the solenoid is. This is a common place to look first as the 4-pin connection is the root of most no-spark issues. Next, the ignition coil, located on the top of the motor and connects to the spark plugs. The last piece is located behind the fan and flywheel, called the pickup coil, or pulsar. Rarely this part fails but more commonly, the igniter and ignition coil fail. Be sure that all of your connections from the engine are plugged in. There is a connector from the pulsar and the 2 leads to the ignition coil that must be connected.

I have a question I have a 2005 ego txt put a lift and tires on it 23in tire cart runs good on flat ground but when on a hill it will not climb it, it just bogs please help

You've changed the geometry of the drivetrain. This puts extra strain on the engine and clutches making the engine work harder to power the cart up hill. Its similar to walking up hill carrying empty buckets vs buckets full of water.

In that case, it's hard to pinpoint what it could be. Lack of power up hill could be anything from brakes dragging to dirt in the carburetor. It also depends on your meaning of bogs. If you mean slow, but the engine is running at high RPM, then this is normal and the clutch is working as it should.

I gabe a 97 EZ GO TXT. Why would the Robin engine build up over 200 psi of compression? Valve adjustment is good. It has a new carburetor from ezgo... new ignition coil and ignitor. Timing is good. Dont know where to go from here.

There are 2 different/similar 2-cylinder engines. Non-MCI and MCI. MCI exhaust manifold is cast aluminum as part of the head. Non-MCI has a cast iron exhaust manifold. Valve adjustment is the same with the exception of the adjusters. Non-MCI engines use a straight slot and 10mm, MCI uses square drive and 10mm. Both use the same .004" (4 thousandths of an inch" clearance.

ALLWAYS WARM YOUR ENGINE UP BEFORE CHECKING COMPRESSION AND ADJUSTING VALVES !!! CHECK THE GAP ON ALL NEW SPARK PLUGS !!!

Kind of hard to do that when it doesn't stay running when its hot until AFTER its done. No need to use all CAPS either.

It sounds like you have the governor out of adjustment.

Too low. For optimal operation, 120 PSI or higher. 140 is about normal.

I have an EZGO Refresher 1200, year 2000. It has started to refuse to go up steep gradients. The belt is more than 1 .1/8th wide but there is a groove in the centrifugal clutch sheave. When I try to go up a steep gradient the revs die and motion stops. I have seen a modification for EZGO clutches called Gboost Severe Duty Clutch Kit. Can you recommend a solution to my problem and is G boost clutch modification any good. Regards Robert UK

I am in the process of cleaning the fuel system carb etc and at the end of the week (when I can borrow a gauge) do a pressure test. I am very dependant on this buggy as I live at the bottom of a cliff. I look forward to your reply Kevin. Regards

120 is low shouldnt it be around 150?

Yes, 120psi is on the low end, but it will run.
