Hey Kevin! Finding your videos was a real nice surprise, just a real nice surprise lol. I have a 1996 EZGO TXT GAS and a 2003 TXT GAS, bought both recently. I am servicing both now for the first time thanks to your videos and have watched all your TXT videos. I have heard you say use spark plugs NGK BPR6ES, 4ES, 5ES OR 2ES in one of your videos and I caught a comment from you about correcting a spark plug statement and cant find that comment in your videos again. I also heard you say using the right plugs is important in these engines without computers. So I just put in NGK BPR6ES but after reading the service manual I just found online which says NGK BPR4ES I am wondering if I should get those out of there and use NGK BPR4ES OR BPR2ES? I do understand that the gap and heat rating are the only difference but don't know how that affects performance? Is a 6 heat rating too far from 4 or 2? Thanks for all the videos man, keep them going!

Hi Kevin. Your videos have been a huge resource for me when working on my 2003 EZGO TXT gas golf cart. Thank you for putting together quality videos that are extremely clear and educational. When I bought my cart a few months ago it ran well but it has always had trouble starting. I have to choke it every time to get it started. With the help of your videos I have completed a valve adjustment, carb removal and cleaning, oil change, changed spark plugs, added a missing fuel filter, drained fuel tank and lines, new gas, and new battery (the battery in it was the wrong size). After all that I am still having to choke it everytime to start even when the engine is warm. I completed the carb clean and valve adjustment today and after that it ran about the same but started backfiring when I let off the gas and come to a stop. After some investigation I noticed that the throttle linkage at the carb seems to be sticking open. Do you have any videos that might address a sticking throttle issue? It seems like the spring at the carb isn’t pulling the linkage back up all the way when I let off the pedal. Also, do you have any ideas for the choke to start issue? Thanks again for the quality videos!

There are 2 cables on gas carts that control the engine. The first cable comes from the accelerator pedal and goes to the governor on the rear transaxle. This is the accelerator cable. The second cable runs from the governor on the rear transaxle to the carburetor. This one is called the governor cable. Its common on those for the cables to start rusting internally and bind. If the throttle plate on the carb moves freely, then you would have to make sure the cables move freely. If either one or both are not smooth at all, they need to both be replaced. Many times its the governor cable that goes bad because of how its routed. The throttle return spring on the carb is not strong enough alone to move this cable. When the governor cable binds, it causes the throttle to stick open and closed. This will cause multiple starting and backfiring issues.

Hey Kevin, love all the videos. I just purchased a 91 EzGo marathon and can not get it going. The guy I purchased it from said everything was good except some wiring issues. But boy did I get taken. When I brought it home it has 30 psi compression. I did a top end rebuild and now have 120 psi, put a new carb in, new fuel filters, new spark plug, and new fuel. Still can only get it to crank but not fire, it doesn’t even seem to want to fire. Any ideas or suggestions what it could be. I watched your solonoid video of a marathon and was thinking that but I have spark also.
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few things you are going to have to troubleshoot. The first thing is to make sure your timing is correct. If you had done a top end rebuild, its easy to get timing wrong if you've never done it before. If that checks out and you have spark, then you need to make sure the fuel pump is pumping fuel. If that's good, change the spark plugs. I've seen it, though its very rare, spark plugs won't spark under compression. Make sure the battery is connected in the correct polarity. If its connected backwards, you will have spark but it won't start. Its possible the new carb has a blockage. Sometimes the float valve gets stuck from being tossed around in shipping. I've see this happen a few times. Take it apart and clean it and see if this helps. You can try squirting some carb cleaner into the carb while cranking it to see if it kicks over a little. Don't use ether/starting fluid. That stuff can kill any engine.

Kevin's Golf Carts Hey, so I tried the majority of what you told me yesterday, fuel pump is pumping, everything is working, except I was looking online for a manual for a 90 2 stroke marathon and I couldnt find one. My question is for a 1990 EZ GO marathon golf cart is it a positive ground or a negative ground system and how do you time a two stroke single cylinder engine?
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh ok, you didn't mention it was a 2-stroke. You're first comment mentions a 91. They made them with a 4-stroke in that year. On 2 stroke engines, check which way the piston is installed as it matters which way the ports on the piston are facing. They need to face the intake. Make sure the reeds are closing properly and have no debris in them. The 2-stroke engines are known for blowing the fan side crankshaft oil seal. This will prevent the engine from running. I've used gasket maker on the outside of the seal after installing them to help keep them in. As far as I'm aware, they are all negative ground.

Hey there , I have a 2004 295cc Robbins engine Ez Go . Bought it used running so so , I put new NGK plugs, new carb , and new 100% gas . It was low on oil so I changed that and filter to the full mark , around 11/2 quart. I did notice some oil in the pcv hose all the way to the carburetor upon replacing it . Ok got it running and in a min or so it started smoking and backfiring some. Well I checked the compression, on one cylinder it was 140 and the other 170 ! I have run it for about 30 min. Off and on but it wants to backfire sometimes. One of the plugs was a little oiled. I'm thinking rings or valve guides? Also the fuel pump vacuum bubbles some oil up the hose toward the pump from the engine...any thoughts ...thanks , John
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
The PCV hose will have some oil in it over time. The vapors will collect and form a film inside the hose and airbox. It sounds like you have bad valve guide seals and wearing oil rings on the piston. You may have to pull the plugs and get a camera down in the cylinder to see the condition of the bore. Backfiring can be due to over-revving, incorrect adjustments on the accelerator and governor cables and linkages, aftermarket ignition components or valve lash out of adjustment. The vacuum line for the fuel pump will get oil in it and will bubble if you disconnect it from the pump and run the engine.

You'll have to go through and find where the key switch wiring is run to. It sounds like someone bypassed the pedal switch because it failed. The start circuit is very simple on these. It goes from the battery, to the key switch, pedal switch, soilenoid.

Hey Kevin, I have a 2001 EZ Go txt and have compression at 95psi in each cylinder after valve adjustment. Is it time for an engine rebuild? If so do you know how much that usually costs?
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
Your compression is on the very low side and it sounds like you could have some carbon build up on the valve seats or wore out piston rings. If you are going to rebuild it, you might as well go with a professional who does nothing but golf cart engine rebuilding. Typically these can cost $700-$1500 depending on the engine and damage.

I would only get one initial spark then nothing. i then tested the voltage leading to the coil and it was not getting 12 volts. I think the highest I saw was 2 volts. I then tested voltage off the igniter and that was 12 volts so think the problem is the wiring from ignitor to coil and pulsar. Do you know if I can buy a replacement wiring harness from the igniter to the coil and pulsar that has the connectors?

@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
I don't do engine rebuilds anymore as they are too time consuming. If its constantly smoking, I'm leaning on bad rings. If it only smokes when starting and it clears up, then bad valve guide seals. I would of replaced piston, rings and connecting rod while I was in there, as long as the cylinder isn't scarred.

They can, but its rare. Open the oil cap while cranking the engine. Look inside to see if the cam shaft is rotating. If it is, get a compression tester and see if you have compression. Now if I just push the pedal down enough to get the starter turning, wait til it picks up revs, then hit the gas, it seems to work. Though sometimes its very sluggish starting out rollling down the road and then the engine cranks up and it takes off fast. I will double check my valve clearance. I have changed the air filter, fuel filter, checked the plugs and gapped them, and added some sea foam to the gas tank with fresh non oxy fuel. Still not wanting to just take off. Any suggestions? Hey Kevin. I just purchased a 2004 EZ GO gas cart with a Robin motor. My first question is did these come with an air filter box or can? Second question is after we did compression test and made adjustments to .006, we did get better compression but only 90 psi on both cylinders, both spark plugs are firing but the engine only busts off and runs when we have the short spark plug wire off the plug and the long spark plug wire on the plug. It doesn’t run great but it will still somewhat run. What do I need to check?
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 22 күн бұрын
I believe 04 has a can style air filter. I can't remember what year this changed. They changed over to the MCI engine at the same time, which has the exhaust manifold cast into the head. The older engine has a cast iron bolt-on exhaust manifold. These engines are different and ignition parts are not interchangable. Adjust the valves to .004 as .006 was an old adjustment we used to use at the golf course I worked at. It was the only way we would get worn out carts to run. .004 is what ezgo calls for in their shop manual. Adjust the valves on a COLD engine. If you lack spark on both plugs, then the coil may have failed. Both plugs will fire at the same time and should have the same amount of spark. Swap the plugs in the cylinder to see if the issue moves. Change both plugs as its possible you have a bad spark plug. You should see a minimum of 120psi of compression for the engine to run well. 150psi is the minimum that ezgo says it needs, but 120psi will work. 90psi is too low. After readjusting the valves, if you still don't see an improvement in compression, squirt a very small amount of oil into the cylinder and retest compression. If it improves, then the rings and cylinders are wore. The engine will need to be rebuilt. If it doesn't improve, then you may have a damaged or stuck valve.

Thank you so much for this reply. I’m thinking it needs to be rebuilt. What kills me though is it will run somewhat on cylinder 2 plugged in and cylinder 1 not plugged in. If I was going to do just the top end rebuild, pistons and rings, will I have to take the motor out to do this operation? Also, what became of this golf cart in the video? Is it still parked at your shop? LOL

@@jason51482 I would just pull the engine out. Save yourself the headache of trying to leave it in. There are only 4 bolts that hold it to the frame. You will have to basically disassemble the entire engine to replace pistons and rings. I stopped doing engines in house and send them off to an engine rebuilder that only works on these engines. It costs about the same to have them machine and rebuild it versus ordering all the parts and doing it myself. The added benefit is they can find other issues that may go unseen. Before going through all that, I would make sure that everything else I mentioned points to a rebuild. If its electrical, a rebuild would be a costly mis-step.

I just purchased a 2005 gas ezgo. It is extremely clean. My mechanic said they were the unicorn of motors. Is this tru? He said they are better than the new kawasaki's .

If you are referring to the twin cylinder Robin engine, then yes. They are a nearly bullet-proof engine. They are strong, smooth and fast to rev. They are easy to maintain, service and repair. Their downfall is getting an OEM ignition coil. I wish this wasn't the case since this engine has been around since very early 90s carts. This engine would be the only reason to get an EZGO.

@@Kevinsgolfcarts Thanks for your reply. Whats wrong with aftermarket ignition coils?
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
I've not had much luck with them. They are weaker than the OEM, don't last as long and can produce other issues in the ignition system. Unfortunately, it is the only option available for this engine.

@@Kevinsgolfcarts was looking last night and found Red Hawk has a similar looking one and it was $142 , I'm going to get a few and cross my fingers. Lol Hey quick question for my EZGO GURU I've got 2 Txt's , one has a flat air filter and the other has a cylinder filter. Both serial plates are missing. Do you have a Ballpark on the years ?

Unlikely in this case. I've been working on this cart for several years and its slowly been getting tired. The governor is cranked way up and the customers' kid beat the hell out of it.

I JUST NOTICED THAT IT'S MISSING A ROCKER ARM SPACER. WORKING ON ONE LIKE THAT NOW AND THE MANUAL ONLY SHOWS 2 BUT MY ENGINE ACTUALLY HAS 3
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
There are only 2 spacers, one between each rocker. The middle is supposed to have a spring, no spacer.

Your other videos you did .006 ?
@Kevinsgolfcarts
@Kevinsgolfcarts 3 жыл бұрын
The EZGO manual calls for .004" valve lash. When I worked at a golf course, we had old EZGOs that would only run when the valves were adjusted to .006". It became habit to adjust them to that gap. I've corrected this in multiple videos.
