Overall evaluation: Acceptable
A 1997 Mercedes-Benz E420 was crash tested on April 16, 1997 into a fixed deformable barrier
at 39.9 mi/h (64.3 km/h) and a 41 percent overlap on the driver side. A Hybrid III 50th
percentile male dummy was positioned in the driver seat with the lap/shoulder belt fastened.
Measures of intrusion taken after the crash indicated the lower instrument panel in front of the
dummy moved rearward 3-5 cm. Resultant intrusion in the driver footwell measured 14 cm at
the footrest and 13-19 cm at other places on the toepan. The upper end of the steering column
moved upward 10 cm and rearward 3 cm. The driver seat rotated forward and outboard due to
deformation of the floor under the seat. The driver door and trunk opened during the crash, but
all other doors remained closed. Postcrash examination of the driver door indicated the latch
was activated by door deformation between the exterior door handle and door latch. The left
rear door required tools to open, but the right front and right rear doors opened with ease after
the crash.
The driver dummy was restrained by a three-point lap/shoulder belt with a pyrotechnic crash
pretensioner and a front airbag. The crash pretensioner activated to remove slack from the
shoulder belt. Despite the pretensioner, 8 cm of webbing was pulled from the retractor. The
action of the force-limiting mechanism accounted for 2 cm of the total webbing pulled from the
retractor. The front airbag did not contact the dummy’s face during deployment. The driver seat
back rotated forward during the crash, causing the head restraint to contact the back of the
dummy’s head. After loading the airbag, the dummy leaned left toward the driver door, twisted
slightly to face the right, and leaned rearward. The back of the dummy’s head then contacted the
driver door window sill. The dummy’s head contacted the head restraint as the dummy settled
into the driver seat in an upright position.
Measurements from the dummy’s head, neck, chest, and legs indicated significant injuries to
these body regions would be unlikely. The dummy’s head contact against the window sill
produced a vector resultant head acceleration of 29 g.

A massive deformation. Notice the dent that occurs above the rear left wheelarch. I was surprised to see this, when I owned one more than 20 years ago it was generally considered one of the safest cars on the market. It strangely did better in EuroNcap (may have been tested with a smaller and lighter engine?).

Well, I wonder if the deformation is a bad thing (to an extent). Doesnt all the deformation show that the kinetic energy of the crash is being channeled around, and absorbed by, the passenger compartment? Thereby preventing it from being largely absorbed by the occupants?

@@roadwarrior144 Collapse of the safety cage is always bad. You want the frontal deformation zone to transform the kinetic energy by deformation, NOT the safety cage. Considering the skills at MB, this car is a scandal - they certainly know how to do things right, but didn't in this case.

Point well made. In my mind I was drawing a parallel between this video and that dramatic commercial about an Australian family getting into a head-on offset crash in their W126. In the commercial one could see significant deformation between the driver’s side “A” pillar and the roof line due to the severe impact. And I do not believe anyone could say the W126 construction was flimsy. Granted this was a real-world example and the crash occurred well above the 40 or 60 Km/H that tests are done, but despite the forces at impact and despite the deformation all occupants survived. Again, Im a lowly grease-monkey by trade and not even remotely an engineer. I was just working through my logic in my head based on the video footage. Merely my 2 cents.

To everyone who's complaining about the build quality: they were constructed under other requirements. They changed the proceedings for the crashtest, aswell they changed the requirements for the safety for pedestrians and other things. For example: there is a reason why the w208 had a b-pillar instead of a powerwindow... Maybe they testet on higher speeds too.

I noticed this as well. Even in the 1950s, when Mercedes was conducting their fist crash tests, they were already stressing the importance of the doors remaining closed and the passenger compartment remaining intact and undeformed. They were very slow to adapt to changing crash test standards in the 1990s, unfortunately, with several of their models failing. Not that they were the only ones. Even Saab and Volvo were having similar issues.

Also Volvo always pointed out the dirty secret that German manufactures would shoe horn larger engines for higher performance models with out addressing the safety aspect knowing that usually base models are tested. Volvo put in serious changes to manufacture engines variants that performed well in crash test They made a narrower version of their inline 5 cylinder for smaller models (S40, V50, C30, late C70) knowing that ever millimeter was crucial to improving crash performance

@@jamie7664 Engines are actually a hazard in a crash, not a benefit. It's a big hunk of non-deforming metal, the movement of which needs to be carefully controlled, since it poses a significant danger to the occupants. Most cars have some sort of mechanism that slides it downwards in case of an accident, to get it out of the way.

This is the beginning of the offset crash test. Almost all cars did poorly since they were designed for the full frontal test. Mercedes said at the time that the offset test did not represent real world crashes, which was obvious BS. They quickly shutup and redesigned their vehicles to ace the test. This test is not done anymore moving on the small offset test. Again, since cars were not designed for that test, they again failed in droves. The IIHS is a moving target which is the best way to improve safety. Todays aces become losers a few model years in the future. This has led to the safest cars ever made by a big margin.

This test is still being performed exactly like this, by both the IIHS and tons of other organizations around the globe. It's a worldwide standard now, ratified by the UN. Newer tests like the small overlap test are being conducted in addition to the 40% overlap test, not instead of it.

@Mattias Johansson When this calamity occurred, their first official response was exactly that. That their off center test showed that the cars were great and more predictable of real-world crashes. Then the video got big air time in national news. They quickly shut up and modified their test and their car architecture to conform to the IIHS. They have been passing it with flying colors since then. BTW I'm not bashing Mercedes, I've owned six and currently own 2. Their initial response was simply tone deaf. At that time, few cars passed the test. The E class was one of the safest cars at that time.

That's uninformed and regurgitated ignorant hearsay from 20 years ago. The LX, LD, and LA architectures have ZERO connection to this vehicle. They once shared suspension and drivetrain components with the 2003 W220 S-Class and 2003 W211. I am tired of the ignorant passing around of this fable, as a Detroit engineer that has worked across both sides of the Atlantic in automotive product planning and development. FCA engineered out the DaimlerChrysler components with the 2015 MY, so as to eliminate licensing fees to Daimler AG. They have little to no components from Benz since 2014.

Hmm, this is why I own a Mercedes. Note the way the doors break open in an accident so you can immediately get out of the car. The worst thing that can happen in a accident is the doors get jammed shut and you're caught in the car. Also note the way the seat moved in the accident.
@rainbowwarrior2635
@rainbowwarrior2635 Жыл бұрын
@Mercedes Germany Official Oh yes the doors breaking open is a safety future. In my W211 there been two instances of me jumping going 90mph and and when the car landed and the doors re locked. The car knows in the event of a hard impact to unlock the doors so you can escape the car after the accident. It's a safety future that goes back to the volkswagen bug. One of the worst things that can happen in a accident is the doors get jammed shut, Then you're stuck in the car while seriously injured, what if the car catches on fire and you can't get out. Porsche was the first to design an emergency door opening mechanism of the vw bug in 1938, the front of the car is shaped like a wedge and if the fenders are hit it cause the running board to push up the door out of the lock and the front frame indents and pushes the door open.
