thanks a million for this one, i never got a chance to actually see this when it happened, but i listened to it on the radio at my dad's work, and i remember singing the victors in the car after Sam Sword's interception.

Griese had ONE OF THOSE DAYS! At the half, I screamed to everybody coming down the steps "you better dig down, and bring your voices, and support this team, and turn this place into the Silverdome"! They gave me these YOU'RE CRAZY looks, but did respond. That endzone was the LOUDEST it's ever was, and it turned into the Silverdome. Griese crawled through, and team picked him up, and Michigan won. Everybody left out of that stadium that day, HOLDING THEIR EARS, from all of the noise.

Tim Dwight was a heckuva return man. Good win for the Wolverines.

I was at this game. I remember being taunted at halftime by Iowa fans, "It's all over, Michigan." This was a sweet victory.

Yep. And a 70 yard kickoff return set up their field goal in the second half. Their offense didn't hurt us. There was just too many special teams disasters.

I was at this game. By far, the best one of the season. I was so dejected when Dwight ran that punt back. What a comeback.

Do you have the 1996 Michigan vs Ohio State game? The one when Shawn Springs slipped leaving Tai Streets open for the touchdown that ruined the Buckeye's National Title hopes.I think the final score was 13-9 am I right?

Dream season nearly de-railed. Brian Griese's worst half of football followed by one of his best. Great comeback by Michigan.

I remember this Iowa team and the Banks/Dwight years. The weak link was Sherman -- and sadly, Hayden Fry -- who didn't know quite how to utilize two great players.

2nd half wow. As Bob Ufer put it "the executers were executing"

I think Iowa had less than 200 yards total offense. They had that one long run, a punt return, and an INT returned to the 1.

Great stuff as always, Historian. Any chance you've got the 2004 or 2006 wins over Iowa?

Does anyone know the name of the color commentator on this game(southern accent)? I loved that guy but can’t remember his name. What a great game this was!

Jon Jansen has said that the Iowa game was the most important game of the 1997 season. Even more than the Penn State or Ohio State game.

@bjkatz7 I disagree, that season really didn't really get bad until after Sherman got hurt and Randy Reiners became the starter.

Iowa was a QB away fom being a national title contende that year. They were pretty damn explosive on offense. Too bad Sherman was an average-below average QB.

Hayden Fry's last good team. Iowa came closer to winning this game than against Ohio State. Still no big win for the Hawks.

Give the Michigan defense credit. Iowa was just over matched. take away the 2 Tim Dwight returns giving the Hawkeye's 10 points, and the score would be more realistic.

I think he was overhyped due to that ridiculous Sisquo haircut he had, I watched him in the Sun Bowl that season and Arizona State was all over him in that game, aside from that one big play in the second quarter we were too.
