Ellande Campbell. Every ballplayer has their moments. The time that he threw Don Zimmer was wrong but a lot of players make stupid choices. Pedro today is a lot more demeanor and he's awesome. He's doing a great job as being an analyst on MLB Tonight.

Before this series, the Red Sox had two explosive 23-run and 12-run games against the Indians in the ALDS that postseason. They didn't exactly pace themselves that year.

nutsackmania Pedro. He was pretty much washed up by 2004. Going over to the NL prolonged his career a bit but by 2009 he was pretty much batting practice and got dismantled by the Yankees not once but twice in the World Series.

Teams shouldn't be rewarded with automatic playoff seeds just because they win a mediocre division with a mediocre record. Balance the schedules, & just put the 5 best records from each league into the playoffs. (The 4th & 5th seeds would still be the wild-cards.). Look at this year. The Pirates & Cubs had the 2nd & 3rd best records in the National League (actually, in the entire sport). Why should they have been the teams whose seasons came down to 1 game (although, from the Pirates' perspective, they shot themselves in the foot by having a losing record against each of the other teams in their division)? Having 2 wild-cards in each league isn't the problem (in my opinion). I like the "last resort" aspect of it, because it motivates teams not to settle for it (so you don't have a situation like what happened in 2010 with the Rays & Yankees). The problem is when teams with superior records get screwed because they faced more competition in their division than a division winner with an inferior record. Also, judging by Michael Rinella's comments on ESPN.com, I very seriously doubt that he'll attach the same asterisk to this year's Yankees (or would've attached if they had done anything in the playoffs) that he's attached to last year's Royals & Giants.

If you cannot top your own division, than you do NOT deserve a chance to simply have a good October and still be crowned World Champions. You were defeated, what was the point of the whole 162 game season when it can come down to who can win three out of five in October. How is it fair if say one team won 105 games, and another won 85 with the same schedule, yet because they just so happen to get hot at the right time and with three out of five games, THEY get to move on in the playoffs. If you can't top everyone in 162 freaking games, you have absolutely no right to be crowned World Champions because you went 12-8 in a single month. If we're going to let FIFTH place teams in, what next? Why not sixth place teams? Don't they deserve a shot? Why not let every team into the playoffs? I'm sorry to hear that. I would imagine that you being a Yankee fan, Fenway wouldn't be your first choice. I've been there, it's an amazing, iconic place. But acting like it's more your home than the new Yankee Stadium, that's just bewildering. The new Yankee Stadium is not quite like the one we said goodbye to in 2008. It's cleaner, has less asbestos, has quieter fans, nicer food, more expensive seats. But it also has something that Fenway doesn't have: the Yankees. That's good enough for me.

Yeah and it's funny because Roger was consistently hitting 95-96 yet was rocked. Shows how key location and mentality are. If not for injuries, Pedro would have been a great pitcher long beyond 2005, much like Clemens was when he lost velocity as an Astro and second Yankee stint.

Matt Ray Agree re injuries. That said I think Pedro's relatively breif career peak was foreseeable. He was severely undersized for a power SP and had a correspondingly violent delivery. Clemens on the other hand had an ideal physique for performing at a world class level into his early 40s.

Good point. Even after gaining weight in Boston, I think Pedro only topped out at roughly 185 in his prime in Boston. Tim Lincecum didn't hold up for long either. Roger's velocity didn't come and go like some guys. It started gradually declining in '02 or '03, but was pretty consistent most nights and likely due to his 6'4", 235-240 frame, his delivery looked much easier. Randy Johnson is a remarkable case, though. At 6'10" with his wiry frame, early career mechanics and career-threatening back surgery in the mid 90's, I never would have thought he'd be a dominant hard thrower until his early 40's and pitch until he was 46.

He was also coming off 6 innings of no-hit relief in game 5 of the ALDS. I know he had enough "days" of rest, but pitchers tend to be really particular about their appearances and that most likely threw him off a little bit.
