I bought this 1999 Dodge Ramcharger for a client way up north.
I show you all around the truck and tell 3 stories of my trip back home.

I can get you one. Because the Canada rule is only 15 years you can buy one of the 2000 or 2001 models. I have seen 3 or 4 2000 models for sale that have a manual transmission. Let me know if you want to see what is available.

What an adventure! Is that Ramcharger a Chrysler de Mexico only product? I do not remember them being available in the US for that generation. Neat truck!

Yes it was Mexico only. I have been looking for more and there are a few more decent ones for sale. Most have been beaten like a , well you know the rest. By the time this came out the 2 door SUV was gone in the US.

These trucks used to be seen in L.A back in the early 2000’s.. they always had Mexico Plates because they couldn’t pass emissions for a California registration

They still can't pass a CA emissions test. They can be registered n other states that aren't so stringent on the smog laws.

This trucks were very expensive at the end of the 90s. They were sold only from 1998-2000. It was considered a sport/luxury truck, specially this 2d because most of the ram chargers a saw were 4d. Coupe models were very unusual and expensive compared with the sedan models, 2d neons, cirrus and rams chargers are very dificult to find today.

On the subject of price, this one had an original price of $298,000 pesos. The next year my 2000 Durango sold new for a price of $400,000 pesos. This was not a very expensive truck compared to other trucks on the market.

The thing not many people realize, is these trucks were actually put together to get rid of a ton of surplus parts. If you think about the 98-02 pickups, everyone bought the extended cab, with the suicide back doors. So Dodge more then likely had a bunch of short bed short cab frames left over, and a bunch of hard rear door extended cabs left over, and because the caravan changed body style in 2000, they had a bunch of caravan hatches left over as well. This second gen RamCharger is literally a parts bin truck, sold to only the smaller Mexican market, just to dump off a bunch of parts laying around headed to the scrap yard otherwise.

What you left out of the equation was this truck was made in Mexico for the Mexican market. The Dodge truck that were being sold at the time in Mexico were regular cab short bed, and a 1 ton cab and chassis. Not many extra cabs were offered in Mexico. Since Chrysler Mexico didn't have the budget the US company had they had to use existing parts to make it profitable. It was only sold to the Mexican market because people weren't buying 2 doors anymore in the US and also if it was sold in the US it would have affected Chryslers CAFE ratings as it is classified as a passenger car.

The Quad Cab short bed SHURELY had the same chassis as the Club Cab. I don't think they had "left-overs" to get rid of. In '98 when the Quad Cab came out you could still get a Club Cab. I've seen plenty of '98s both ways.

That shoulder belt surround is standard Ram Quad Cab.

From the second window it is all standard quad cab. From there back it is Mexico only.

Ram extended cab chassis, Ram front clip, bespoke rear sheet metal, Caravan lift gate, Durango tail lights.

Look closer Jeff, they are not Durango tail lights. It is very hard to find good tail lights for these trucks, believe me I have tried.

@@jeffhutchins7048 If you look at the body line down the side it isn't completely smooth like the Durango. They had to have something that matched that line. I have seen one of these with the Durango lights and they look good enough.

At least there's an option available. I've had to replace a lot of taillights. If I owned one I'd probably pull the factory ones and save them.

I've learned about these Ramchargers in the mid 2010s. Eventually when they reach 25 years they should be easier to import. I would like to have one someday along with a second gen Ram.

I have two right now that can legally, as of today. I have a Silver one and a Black one. Others are coming up over time. If you want one I can get one for you when you are ready.

They should’ve sold this generation in the US and Canada. I’d love for the Ramcharger to return. If it’s a Ram it’ll be Ram Truck’s first SUV. If it’s a Dodge it’ll be a crossover to replace the Journey.

The tailgate isn't the problem. The lights are the problem. They could have made them look slightly more like the Ram Truck.

They do give the truck its own personality. I am not sure if the pick up lights would have worked with how much real estate had to be covered from the quarter panel to the edge of the tail gate. As it stands there is quite a gap there. I have checked that gap on a few Ramchargers and they are all the same so it was a factory thing.

They come up for sale fairly often. Finding one in nice condition is the trick. I do have a quality paint shop that can paint one reasonably. If you send me a message on Instagram or Facebook I can talk more with you about it.

Now that these are legal to bring into the USA, how are people transporting them up? Can you just drive or trailer it across since the two countries share a border?

When I sell one, depending on where it is purchased, it can be transported to the border or driven. This one came from Nuevo Leon and there was no transport between our two cities. Once at the border the buyer drives it across with the correct documents, but that is assuming the date on the drivers door is actually 25 years old. This one won't be 25 years old until April and at that time I will take it to the border and the buyer will cross it. Do you want one? I know where there is a Silver/Titanium one with the leather and cloth interior just like this one.

Does the Ramcharger have US EPA and DOT compliance labels? Do Mexican spec cars in general have US compliance labels? Because I think vehicles that do can be legally imported into the US even if they're not 25 years old.

No they do not. that is a big stumbling block for newer Mexican vehicle entering the US. As a matter of fact I have a 2000 Durango that was made in the US along side the US truck and my sticker on my door where it should have the federal information only says "EXPORT VEHICLE".

There is a process you can go through with the EPA.You might want to do a little research on that. It might not be too expensive when the vehicle is the same as the US counterpart.@@electricalinput5999

@@mexicanspec Almost forgot but at 22:13 that white sticker isn't a US compliance label is it? Because apparently one of the designers of the Ramcharger claimed the truck was built to meet US standards.

It was built with the same standards as the US vehicles, it is a Ram truck after all, but because it does not have the physical sticker on the door it will not pass a smog test.@@electricalinput5999

Toyota started selling here in the early 2000's. We didn't get the diesel trucks. Nissan now has a diesel Frontier however.

I’ve been thru Monterrey, Saltillo, Torreón and in Durango MX but me and my family stayed in a town 2 min from the border of state of Coahuila but I’m glad y’all did not stay in Torreón cuz it’s a still a s*** show over there

@@mexicanspec I glad you didn’t stay there and especially right now since all that violence happening there also in Sinaloa it’s still bad out there but in Monterrey it kinda calmed down recently the last time I went to Mexico was in 2010 when I went to get 2 bad teeth extracted in Nuevo Progreso but with my family when we actually stayed for like the weekend in Durango was 2005 for my uncles wedding and 2009 for my stepsisters 15th bday aka quinceañera but after 2010 no more

Chihuahua is not near Monterrey, dont say you were on the area … like 800 miles not near . Torreon is not south , actually is north west to Monterrey, kind of half way to Chihuahua , and Durango its way smaller and uglier than Torreon. Dont know where are you from or your background etnicity but dont go around bad mouthing my Mexico. Chihuahua and Torreon are big cities around 2 million population each and Monterrey it’s near 4 million population
