No HD comes close to the classic SPORTSTER 1957 - 1997.

I swear, carbureted Harleys have clearer 'potato' sound than the newer efi motors.

It's the idle speed. The EFI has the idle speed controlled by the ECU and is faster and non--adjustable. This is actually a good thing because the smaller EVO motor is supposed to idle at +/- 1000 rpm's. Any slower and the oil pump can cavitate which will starve the motor of oil. A lot of people reduce the idle speed on carb'd Sportster's to get the "potato-potato" sound. This is not a Big Twin motor which can handle the slower idle speed.

@@snmrz Glad I could help. The history of the Sportster is fantastic. H-D created in the mid-50's to compete against the Brit bikes our veterans were bringing home from Europe. H-D didn't have anything as light or as fast. The Sportster even had the controls on the "wrong side" until 1975 when the US gov't mandated that all motorcycles in the US had the same shift pattern, brake pedal on the right, shifter on the left among other things. The Sportster was NEVER intended to compete with its older and bigger brother. Even the EVO 80/1340cc engine is different from the smaller EVO 883 and EVO 1200. Apples and oranges. Both good, but still different.
