Actually assuming player 1 resigns the first game, and it's best of six, then player two can attempt to force draws as much as possible, in this case they will win the best of six. For both to resign over and over would mean player two is a bit of a fool

@@ayelag We could be in a potentially infinite number of dimensions. As beings with more than one eye we can experience only three spatial dimensions. We experience only one point in the time dimension at any given time (us traveling at a rate of about 1 second per second unless you are approaching the speed of light). We are able to imagine and measure the time dimension regardless, due to being able to deduce that such a thing exists through memories. edit: we actually only see two space dimensions, but because we have more than one eye our brain can calculate depth. Our sense of touch and sound does, however work in 3d.

I feel like this could make a good challenge or bar game with the addition of one rule: In the event of a stalemate, black wins. With this change, white still has a few guaranteed paths to victory, but one wrong move and black wins. In a game where players have never played before it would balance things out a bit. That is until the players inevitably work out the solution.

@IONATVS

It should as that’s what being a solved game means: for any scenario, you can calculate exactly what move you should make to guarantee the best possible outcome, even if your opponent makes their best possible moves to guarantee the best possible outcome for themselves-which is usually a draw if the opponent is trying the same thing and the game is fair. And both are solved games that are simple enough that those calculations can be done by a single human from memory. The only reason other simple games without randomness, like (normal 2D)Chess and Go *aren’t* fully solved games and instead have to rely on humeuristic algorithms or deep learning algorithms to play successfully is the sheer number of turns ahead they would need to look ahead and the number of possible moves in each turn they would need to evaluate, which is too much to hold in even supercomputer-sized memory.

WOW EXCELLENT EXCELLENT ANALYSIS/DEMONSTRATION OF SOLVING 1D CHESS! some notes/highlights 0:00 - not sure board is setup correctly...bottom right is dark square? should be light square right? 0:00 - reminds me of this rule in topology that the n-sphere is 'simply connected' for n greater than or equal to 2 but not simply connected for dimension 1. or how real 1-manifolds are easily classified but complex 1-manifolds, being real 2-manifolds, aren't. (or something) nice. nice. 0:11 - rook = queen = bishop in 1D chess right? 0:11 - i guess pawns are not soul of 1D chess since they shouldn't be able to get past the opposite king or capture pieces 3:12 waiting move aka quiet move? wow nice 3:33 - smothered mate niiiiiiiiiiiiiice 5:28 - THE GREATEST: MATE BY AN X-RAY!!!!!!!!!!! Ideas for the other pieces. Bishop; acts like a rook but it can only go on the color it starts on. If there is a piece on a diffrent color, it may choose to hop over that piece, and capture it to end its turn, if there is a piece behind the piece which is jumped over, it cannot make the move. Queen; can move infinitely in both directions like a rook, but can also hop over a piece in its way to capture it (as long as there is nothing behind said piece, it can also just go to the place where the piece is and knock it off. Pawn; can move 1 foward (or two on its first turn) and capture 1 forward, however, it has a special ability. It can move to the same square of a (friendly) piece and even move ahead of the (friendly piece) on its next turn and both pieces are just fine, for example: a pawn moves from the 3rd rank to the 4th rank, but there is already a (friendly) knight there. Well no worries it can move there anyway, meaning two pieces can occupy the same square, and on the next turn it can go from 4th to 5th rank, it just walked through a piece. This will not work if a pawn tries this with an enemy piece, the pawn will just capture it. A pawn will be captured if an enemy piece moves first into the pawns square. Secondly a Friendly piece can move into a friendly pawns square: (excluding the rook) which ends the pieces turn, for example: queen is on the 2nd rank and there is a pawn on the 3rd rank, the queen can move to the 3rd rank being on the same square as the pawn. This cannot work with any other two pieces, Only the pawn is allowed to go on the same square as a friendly piece. A bishop cannot be on the same square as a knight. no more than 2 pieces can be on a square. if a enemy piece to take on a square with a piece and a pawn, both pieces are captured allowing for 2 captures at once. And lastly, if a piece is not on the same square as a pawn, it cannot see through it, but if the piece is on the same square as it, it can see through it. I'd enjoy a reply that can simplify the pawns special rule. Edit (you might need to extend the board to something like 16 squares long if you want to play with these extra pieces) EDIT #2; in order to give the rooks more freedom, the rook has a one time castle move, where if both pieces havent moved, the rook may switch places with ANY friendly piece, again both the rook and the targeted piece cannot have moved. And an idea, you can play with 2-5 types of pieces instead of all 6. And some other ideas: King goes on the 1st rank and the rook goes on the 2nd rank the queen and bishop go ahead of the king rook, and the knight can be sandwiched in between any of the pieces as it can hop over, and pawn(s) go in the front.

I disagree because under these conditions it will always be a draw. The pieces basically have two options: they move or they kill another piece. If they just move then players can be in an infinite loop of moves like jumping the horse, for example. If a piece kills the other without checkmate then there will be exchange of pieces and in the end it will eventually be (rook vs rook) where neither player can eliminate the other's piece so they stay infinitely. (rook vs horse) The rook can't kill the Knight only the Knight can kill the rook and whether or not it kills they will both end up stuck in an infinite loop of moves again because king vs king and knight force this. (horse vs horse) One knight blocks the other and if one of the players chooses to kill the opposing Knight then go back to the end of ( horse and king vs king ) or there are only the two kings on the board in a loop again. If there is no rule where you beat the opponent then the objective is just not to make any move to lose, in which case both will be doing repetitions in order not to win.

proposed sidegrade an invincible pawn for each team lies on eight rank they can occupy the same space if a piece of their color is on the same file as the pawn, that piece gets cardinal movement (up down left right). if a piece exists on a rank that isnt first, it moves with its respective pawn. a piece must return to 1st rank if there is an available space for it to do so and it would not be an illegal move.

I’d like to see a huge line graph of all the possible variations. Only 2 back and forth moves, tho.

Black king: I went forward in time, to view alternate futures, to see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict. Black rook: How many did you see? Black king: Fourteen million six hundred and five. Black knight: How many did we win? Black king: One.

there's 2 variant moves that also work: 1) after black rook moves forward 1 space (black's first move) white actually has another possible waiting move, Rook moves back 1 space instead of king moves forward 1 space. It has the same effect. 2) in the situation where black moves knight forward, then white captures rook check, then black moves forward to escape, white moves rook forward, black king captures knight, again white has 2 possible moves, the other is move the king forward, in which case blacks only move is to move the king back, then rook captures knight mate like before
