Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy this view of the Norfolk Southern Pocahontas Division taken in April 2000. Nothing like the sights and sounds of locomotives battling the grades, and rugged mountain railroading. Lots have changed since this was taken in 2000. Freight cars that are almost void of any graffiti, tons of coal traffic, tunnels, before they were notched out for high cars, position light signals, and on and on.
Video shot with a Sharp Slimcam VHS camcorder.

This one really makes me miss seeing standard cab GEs and CR blue still around Also I love the sound of the clip starting a 5:40, with that nicely tuned K5LA echoing off the hills

Awesome video! One quick note, I think the CP SD40 at 21:37 is actually DM&E 6084. That’s an awesome catch way out there on the Pokey!

Those GEs sound like the are pulling so damn hard that it makes you realize the brute force of the steam engines. Was amazed to see that coal stage. Since I was little I've been impressed and amazed by the railroads all over the world, thanks for sharing this.

Watching these trains bring back memories of when I visit my grandmothers when they lived in Kyle. Now they are no longer there, coal Is declining, can’t get a Demon burger at the coffee shop in Northfolk, and double stacks are now on the line. Thanks so much for the vids

I love playing train simulator pro 2015 on my phone listening to the pocahontas east and west district as well as Roanoke on the scanner. It brings even more fun to the realism to the game.

I miss railfanning that line. But I stopped visiting after the N&W CPL signals all fell. That and widecab GEs no longer make this line worthy of the seven hour drive to see it.

Same thing here anb. I have less drive time than you, but loosing the signals, all the coal traffic and many branches, I have no desire to invest the drive time and high gas cost. At least we have the memories of better times. Thanks for watching.

At 4-22 why did the track have an S bend in it when they could have had a single flowing bend, not just us modelers that do it

Tony, there are some alignment oddities at Tug Junction. At one time Tug Branch was double tracked from Tug Junction to Wilcoe Yard. Also, in the steam era the passenger station was in the middle of downtown Welch. So the EB passenger trains would go across a little piece of Tug Branch to the Welch Loop to access the passenger station and then rejoin the mainline east of Welch Tunnel. I can't remember the year but if you go back in time far enough the mainline actually followed part of the Tug Branch alignment with all rail traffic going through downtown Welch. Lots of history on the "Pokey".
