Train: NS 73X (Shelocta, PA to Ashtabula, OH)
Power:
NS SD70M-2 2764
NS SD70M-2 2704
Length: 119
The SD70M-2 pair returns after assisting another train east and gets a track authority back into the secondary and then stops for a crew change. Soon, the fresh crew takes the power down to the train and reconnects and takes a while for an air brakes test. Once the test was complete and an eastbound cleared the switch, 73X had the all clear to proceed west.

Enjoyed the video. I suppose that coal cars (compared to other types) get so little graffiti is because they generally move in unit trains and don't sit for long periods in big city yards (where spraypaint vandals seem to lurk) or in desolate industrial sidings. Doubt if there are many taggers in coal mining areas, or on big power plant properties. Surprised to see so many "Southern" cars some 35 years after the merger with N&W to form NS.

See the crease under the lights and in the center of the horse? GE only has a crease at the top of cab. means Emd has more attention to detail. also floor board light is same style as SD's and GP's of 70's means more heritage. just saying..

In college, for a year, I lived across the street from a small yard that locals used. They always kept a few older locomotives there and they would smoke something awful when first started. A few years later I met an engineer that worked out of that yard, so I asked him. He told me the main thing he always came across was worn turbo seals. This really looks like burnt oil (just a bit), but could be any number of seals/rings. My guess would be the turbo, though. Bad rings and you could possibly wind up with a "runaway."

is it me or the locomotives designed different than those of CSX and the other companies?And if so are they made by different companies?
@TheNSrailfan
@TheNSrailfan 3 жыл бұрын
This is a pair of SD70M-2's built by EMD, CSX has/had a very similar in appearance SD70ACe also built by EMD. The M-2 is DC powered, and the ACe is AC powered. When two different railroads buy the same model it is still possible to notice small details that are different as some railroads may request specific features.

This process is mind boggling. 20+ minutes to change crews? Detaching the engines from the train and then having to hook them up again?
@TheNSrailfan
@TheNSrailfan 8 жыл бұрын
+Cats01 When changing crews they have lots of paperwork to go over with the new crew. They have track bulletins to compare and the new crew must inspect the power making sure everything is okay before they may continue. The engineer must check for any broken or malfunctioning equipment on the locomotives and must report it as soon as possible. The engines had to be detached and the train tied down so they could help shove a train east, then they had to come back and reattach to their train and do a brake test since the engines had been detached.

Blowing blue smoke? Probably needs a lot of service.
@TheNSrailfan
@TheNSrailfan 8 жыл бұрын
+Cats01 "There are a number of reasons why engines will blow blue smoke, but assuming the correct oil is used, the main culprit behind the problem is oil burning in the cylinders. It only takes a tiny amount of oil to produce blue smoke from the exhaust. Some engines have been known to continue running strong for thousands of kilometres even burning small amounts of oil. That said, once an engine develops an appetite for oil, often the only way to rectify the problem is to repair the failed internal components." - www.berrimadiesel.com/home/smoke-signals/
