The Toyota Celica has an incredibly weird legacy. From its early days as a Japanese Muscle car all the way to a front wheel drive economy "sports car." This 1983 Toyota Celica had me relive the flory days of the RWD Toyota Celica and all it's potential it had as a performance platform. With a 1JZ Tomei upgraded turbo swap, this brown Japanese hot rod is no slouch. So what's it like driving a 1JZ swap Celica? Let's go for a driver and find out!

I had one of these as well when I was about 20. Fun car, especially after I rebuilt the 22R engine and put a cam in it😁. It was my fourth car after a 78 Corolla, an 83 Corolla (when they were both still rear wheel drive), and a short stint in an 80 Saab 900 turbo, that was fun and quick when it was running right, but died a few months after I got it. It was definitely a sob (Saab?) story. My favorite car was my 95 Integra GSR, followed by my current 17 Civic SI, and then that wonderful rear wheel drive 83 Celica!

I like it. I'm in my 40's, been putting high hp in cars and trucks for a long time. I recently acquired a '93 Ranger, figured I'd stuff a 5.0 in it, but soon realized that the 2.3 Lima that was in it could produce the same amount of power and be half the weight, so I put around 2k in the Lima build and have it pushing 450bhp and 420lb/ft . It's astonishing how much power you can squeeze out of a good 4 cylinder.

I had an 82 GT Hatch as one of my first cars, still have an 84 Hatchback. I absolutely love these cars. This was also the first body style of the Celica to get a turbo from the factory (Celica GT-TR) and that was to homologate the Celica for Group B racing. The 82 and 83 have those odd tip up headlights, the 84 and 85 have a somewhat more normal pop up headlights, the reason is aerodynamic drag. This body style was designed with motorsport in mind, and the hatch back Celica had a Cd of .24 in the 80's which Toyota seemed to forget when they brought out the Prius saying that it had the lowest Cd of any car ever @.24. Hope you enjoyed my trip through the weeds lol

Best celica imo, although the 84-85 is my preference with the semi-traditional pop-ups. Got a 84 gt i picked up last March and stock as a bone, but fun. Kinda torn on swapping stuff out or restoring it to former glory. The 22 is neat but definitely not a race engine and the w58 as mentioned can't take too much power, and the gt diff and brakes are open and drums.

I got to say you're right on that man so I've always been a die-hard Honda guy of the 90s and early 2000s but there was two people in my car group that had celica's one was a 96 GT beautiful teal color with I think the 2.2 Camry motor with just intake headers exhaust fun car but the other guy in our car group had a 2002 Celica GTS with the full TRD kit on it spoiler etc and with intake headers exhaust that 2ZZ was a badass car he used to hang neck and neck with our buddy with the RSX that was in the car group and we also had another guy in the car group with the 05 Toyota Corolla XRS with the same motor both badass cars with that engine personally out of all the celica's I like the 96 GT and the 2002 Celica GTS those are my favorite body styles and that early 2000s Tuesday was literally Toyota's equivalent to the K20 Honda motor my buddies was silver carbon fiber hood roof and trunk on some really nice black wheels beautiful car you rarely see them fixed up and not riqced out I think that's why they don't get a lot of love but man when those ones are done right they are awesome cars I was hoping somebody would bring that up in the comments

@@seattlejdmcivic I've got a TRD GTS with the whole sha-bang aswell that i daily, i friggin love this thing; its like ungoddly amounts of fun and IMO its one of the best handling FWD sports cars. and the 'lift' engagement, or VTEC hits pretty hard, it almost doubles HP from 6000 to 7000 RPM and carries it all the way to 8000-8600 rpm, depending on what ECU you have in the car. unfortunately the one problem with this engine is modability. while the 2ZZ can push 300hp N/A, its incredibly expensive because Yamaha pushed the engine near its reliable limit and then locked the ECU so you have to buy an expensive modded one before you can even get a proper base tune out of the car, which leads to people just swapping out existing ECUs or finding the TRD upgrades like the headers, exhaust and if they are lucky, the Supercharger from the Lotus Exige. or if they are even luckier, the TRD supercharger. but even those only make 220 and 230hp respectively

@@massluca0078 that's what's up man honestly I was trying to find some reviews on the early 2000s GTS with the TRD kit on it and there's really doesn't seem to be any good reviews of driving one just people talking about the good and bad but not really any good driving reviews do you happen to have any videos of yours I honestly think it would be an interesting race with either one of my cars I got my 95 Civic that's my built track car I've been building for 7 years always been a 90s Honda fan but I think it would probably be a better race with my daily driver that I got from my uncle it's a 04 Honda Accord coupe the Honda factory performance model hfp with the hfp front lift rear lift side skirts bigger Wheels bigger brakes the V6 with intake headers exhaust the bigger 3.5 intake manifold and throttle body and I'll be hanging with a lot of v8s the V6 J series Hondas are definitely a whole different level than all the B series and k series I wish my buddy still had his GTS unfortunately he ended up getting rid of it for the BRZ which I think was a huge mistake those things are so damn slow back with my Honda was a simple d series single cam I was smoking those things but yeah the Celica you have like my buddies is probably the only one I would personally own just because it is so close to the K20 and I'd be happy with just intake headers exhaust and even though a tune and ECU would be expensive just get it chipped and tuned on the dino to those bolt-ons and I'm sure it would open up that 2zz motor real nice

I was an 80s kid, so I remember this car. Never understood the strange headlights they put it versus the more conventional pop up lights.

When you think about it the 86 (FRS, GT86, GR86) is a new Celica. The AE86 (Corolla/Sprinter) was an economy car that happened to stay RWD while the Celica was a sports car that happened to go FWD. I understand that Toyota chose to name the 86 after the AE86 because of it's association with being RWD and that the Celica's name lost some marketing appeal over the last few generations but really the 86 is the new Celica returned to RWD.

Crazy how these cars were like 500-1000 dollars a year ago. Now they’re selling for 5k+……. Hopefully they start making more parts for them! Especially the ra65 chassis !!
