In this video I show the difference between 1k auto paint and 2k auto paint. 1k paints have been around for a long time and is an older method of spray painting. It is safe to spray at home or garage and you can also get a great finish.
In this video I go into detail the differences and how to get that 1k acrylic looking awesome.

I painted my car with 1k a year ago in my garage. I'd never painted before, just learned from KZfaq. A year later it still looks awesome and its easy to fix mistakes and damage with thee acrylic. 2k hardens on your lungs and your neighbours lungs if you don't have a proper booth. It's not worth the risk.

I'm impressed that you talk about the safety hazards of 2k paint. I wasn't initially aware of this until I did some research before improving my classic car. I'm disappointed that most other 2k paint demonstrations on you tube do not mention this very important subject! I'm happy to use 1k paint with protective clothing, nitrile gloves and a filtered face mask at home. However I have found that some 1k epoxy primers still contain he dreaded iso stuff. Keep making this very informative and useful videos.

Im flabbergasted lol only three days wait for acrylic before wet sanding with only 1200 grit, then compounding for a great finish. I'm no expert but I have to wait at least a week, start with 1200 then go 1500 then 2000 and even 2500, then compound and I still get scratches on the finish. You make it look easy! Great job!

I watched another video comparing 1k and 2k. One tip was 2k is resistant to solvents. That’s important for automotive use. The buffing of the clear on 1k gave great results. I may try on the one k application that I’ve already applied. I had one spray can of 2k and it worked great. Maybe buffing later will improve the finish. You’ve got an amazing set up but I’m not able to do that so DIY is where I’m at.

I just shot rustoleum 4:3:1 paint, thinner(60%naptha40%spirits) and hardener and a splash of penetrol. It looks and cures like glass. It is solvent resistant and if I like to smash on some clear I can scuff it with gray scotch pads and flow coat it with a clear any time. Shine like a chrome-dome chicken bone.

Dulon primer filler is a great primer filler for 1k application Also, you don’t spray etch primer over bog, that’s not what it’s for. In 1k, bog is applied direct to metal that’s been keyed with 36 grit, sometimes even 24 grit. Bog WILL fall out if you don’t do this. After bog has been applied, then you etch prime the surrounding exposed bare metal and then hit that etch with 240 on an interface pad. After that, you then spray something like ppg/dulon high build primer filler. Once dry, mist on a guide coat then sand usually with 400 wet or 320 dry followed by etch primer and primer surfacer on any rub through. wet sand those areas carefully again and then top coat is ready to go on. Top coat can be cut with 1200 if orange peel is noticeable, or skip that step and move to 1500 and then 2000 grit followed by a final buff with farécla g3 compound on an orange foam pad buffing machine

You can bake 1K Paint. If you don’t bake it you use a hardner. Dries quicker and higher gloss. Don’t think anyone that does not bake it does not use the hardner. If you use the hardner you don’t have to buff it. It is better if you buff it. Harder is usually not that cheap but being that it sets up quicker with the hardner you get less debris in the paint. 1K paint is not that friendly to metallics. 1K paint reflects light differently than basecoat/Clear coat system
@CalinDee
@CalinDee 2 жыл бұрын
You're certainly correct in that 1k Acrylic cures with a much better finish baking it. In the right situation it will even re-flow to address minor paint inconsistencies. Testament to that fact are the Holdens up to and including the VS Commodore, all painted with 1K Acrylic - never needed buffing, outside of repair work, as they were all cooked! Not suggesting that such materials were better than the enamel that then followed for all later versions (or the 2K that was used for all post paint-shop repair work in the factory). Many ways to achieve a shiny finish in paint...
@newwb

Your might be confusing single stage with 1k. 1k means one part no hardener. Single stage means not basecoat clearcoat. Yes single stage can be unfriendly to metallics

2k can stand up to Australia's harsh environments better than acrylic lacqure. For the home repairer, acrylic lacquer is the go. Fast drying, any blemishes can be sanded and recoated within 15 mins and flocoated. 2k is great if you have a spray booth and as stated, can stand up to Australian conditions. 1k acrylic is basically just like the old lacquer which was outlawed hear in CA and is also absolutely terrible in terms of durability and is more labor intensive in the finishing stages only advantage is it's ease of application when I first started painting cars Dupont had a system with an acrylic color that you could apply a 2k clear over that the auto painting industry has changed a lot over the 25 years that I was a painter.

he talks about severe orange peal on acrylic clear coat. you can avoid it by going slower with spraying going to fast and it is going to mist. The trick is going a bit slower how ever that is tricky to do. Practice with dollar store clear coat paint it will help you find the speed you need for the glass finish you want. 2K if done wrong is very hard to polish by hand and a machine is expensive for the small piece you need to polish. and instead of 2 coats do 3 or 4 so if u do need to polish you got some meat to polish away before you hit paint again.

So the 2K primer can take the place of the body filler, etch primer and the puddy? So if let's say you had deep chips in the paint or paint damage that goes down to the primer. For example I had some deeps chips gauges in the rear hatch of my 2015 Toyota Rav 4. would I sand those areas to the primer or to the metal then use the 2 K primer filler ,let it dry and use just 600 grit to smooth out those areas then finally paint and clear coat? Last question . Can I use a 2K primer then use 1 k paint and 2K clear coat? Thank you

Ahh the old orange peel debate. Orange peel is preferred in many concours car judging events. To the extent that you can have points deducted for NOT having orange peel.

Question: If I use the 1k for spraying a motorcycle tank (at home project) is the 1k more likely to cause damage to the finish from gasoline down the line?

Defiantly much easier to paint acrylic over 2 pack paint but you didn't mention that 2 pack is much more durable and can withstand a heavier out door environment sun, wind and rain and on the road conditions. Only downside is acrylic paint is so easily to scratch compared to 2 pack paint.

Mate that's even better than the 2K but I wonder how that would look all buffed up?

Why use etch primer over filler? I thought that was for going over metal.
