Thank you for a great video. I wonder if the reason it was faster without the mesh was that the carbon felt was higher than the top of the tin. This would increase the surface area available to burn that has access to oxygen. Even just the wavy nature of the winding rather than the flatness of the carbon felt sheet would increase surface area exposed to oxygen. So it is possible that it isn't the screen but the surface area. Edit: It just occurred to me that a wicking material will also increase the surface area of the alcohol exposed to air. This could explain why the stove without wicking material boiled water slower than the others. Liquids evaporate based on the surface area (and other factors). A wicking material would increase the evaporation of the alcohol, increasing the amount of alcohol vapor available to combustion, and therefore lower boil times.

I think your analyst of the non screen burner is correct. Also they are easier to make. 🙂

An addendum that you can do is to pull the mesh screen off of your puck tin to see if boil time reduces. Also, you could compare gel fuel in an empty tin. And then maybe you could pull up the center end of the coil of felt to form a bit of a wick to help concentrate the flame

The next day I did a burn of the puck burner with out the screen and got a boil of 5:32 down from the 5:43 with the screen. It's interesting how the screen slows the burn. I retried the spiral version and got the exact same time 4:51, surprised me.

@@planetsideagent sounds like you found a true winner then! I wouldn't think the screen would have that much affect on it. Maybe it just disperses it to where it doesn't concentrate the flame as much, which is what makes me think maybe pulling the center of the spiral up even 1 or 2 mm may help

I may try pulling up the center.

👍👍👍 .. nice comparison .. very informative 😊. I've also just discovered 'Gear Sceptic's' Channel. Wow, this guy does it right and by the looks of it, some Mantras previously 'cast in stone' are going to be relegated to busted myths 😁. Snuffing out these types of burner, I just blow the flame out and then make sure that it is out, with the wet cotton face cloth that I always have close by (many uses that wet cloth has ..). With time, I have managed to judge how many 'squeezes' of fuel is required for a specific burn and thus rarely have to blow out flames. I prefer to 'run short' and then just add more fuel to finish the job .. thus the wet cloth is ensure that the flame has fully extinguished and that the burner is cool enough to safely refill. Another good one .. reinforcing my belief in putting 'filler' into my alcohol burners (even my Trangia). Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
