In this video, we're replacing the worn out shocks, coils, and leaf springs on Mike's 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Base model truck. While the 1st gen year models run from 1995-2004, these parts seem to be specific to 1998-2004, so you may want to double check your part numbers if you have a 95-98 model.
On the front of the truck, we are replacing the factor coils with ARB Old Man Emu (OME) 880X coils. We were hoping to find that these coils were taller than factory, but they were very close to the same height. Luckily, the Bilstein 5100 Series shock 24-249928 provided an adjustment circlip that allowed us to adjust 2" inches of lift on the front.
This will be a 3 part series. In videos 2 and 3 we will explore the ARB OME Rear Leaf Springs EL122RA and EL122RB, with new Bilstein 5100s 33-247717. The kit we purchased came with an exhaust bracket ARB OMB FK21 that we will install, as well.

This is very well documented, and for what appears to be a 98-00 tacoma as well. Which is perfect for me. Thank you guys for posting this as it really helps me decide what I want to go after when lifting my 98 tacoma 4x4

Thank you! I hope to get the 2nd video out soon. My buddy’s Tacoma is still sitting on the side of the house waiting for the back end to get lifted. I’m sure the neighbors are thinking that we’re going for the “squatted” look like the kids, but that is certainly not the case! Please let us know how your project goes! Thank!

REPLACE THE UPPER BALLJOINTS BEFORE THEY FAIL!! me and my brother lifted the front end of our trucks (my 99 Tacoma and his 98 4Runner) and had to use a jack on the upper control arm to get the lower shock mount in and all the extra tension cause the old joints do fail ripping the axle out and dragging the wheel under the vehicle causing a lot of damage also it rips the brake line so you lose brakes as well. It Happened to me 2 separate times 2 different sides same with my brother. I would recommend loosening both control arms upper and lower and tightening them back up at the new angle to help with the stress also moog makes excellent ball joints unless you go oem but definitely worth the $50 and a few hours of work to prevent that from happening I was going 80mph on the freeway going over a bridge when it happened to me the first time I almost died so I just wanted to let you know the danger. I’m currently replacing my suspension with the bilstine 5100’s aswell and I just got some icon upper control arms to fix those issues along with the geometry of the wheels best of luck and stay safe out there!

Hi Jacob, thanks for the warning! I never thought of that and I really appreciate your advice. We will definitely do that before we take her out at highway speeds.

Temporarily disconnecting the front sway bar may have given you enough slack to drop that lower control arm a bit more to get the lower shock mount in.

LOL - Yeah, I learned that the hard way the first time I replace my struts. Fussed and sweated several hours and called a mechanic friend and that was his first question ;-)

Hi guys, thx for the video. I see that you printed out some Toyota 'service manual' pages. I can't seem to find anything to print out. If you have any advice please lemme know, thx!

I could not find any torque specs from ARB on their website, so any torque specs are from the Toyota Factory Service Manual.

I reached out to Mike, the truck owner, with your question. Here is his response: If I could redo it I would drop it a half inch to take pressure off the ball joints and it would still be level. Could probably even go the one inch setting and half close to level or maybe a half inch of rake. It’s only still at crawling speeds on rough ground. You speed up.. it butters out.

@@budgetprojectsbydavid5263@17:24, looks like you guys put back on the old top bushing, after saying that you only bought the spring+shocks and the other OE parts you guys didn’t buy/aren’t replacing looks to be still in good shape. Mine looks a little worse than yours, and I’ve been contemplating whether or not to replace that bushing or not. The part that Toyota says is the OEM actually doesn’t look like the old OEM part.

David, it's been a number of months since I saw your video here and did the lift. I'm super happy with how mine came out. I used eibach lift coils instead of ome, no particular reason other than price maybe. Anyways, since then I've replaced all the balljoints and tie rods. They were done and after the lift they decayed severely. They were the original and almost 260k on them so it was time anyway. Tell your friend he should probably swap those out before one busts. Thanks again for the info and videos.
