My first one is today i already know how to skate it just hoping this will help me improve as when I skate my legs are shaky

Make sure you are wearing the correct size skate and tie them tight! Most people are in a size too big (skates run larger than shoes). If you are wobbly before you get on the ice it’s not going to get better on the ice! That may contribute to the shakiness that you feel.

I program assist (would be junior coach in USA) for CanSkate (learn to skate). My adult children use to play Broomball as teens and wore Broomball pads. Broomball knee & elbow pads are soft and allow for lots of movement.

Thank you for the tips :D I wanted to start figure skating once the pandemic goes down a bit but I don't think that's happening anytime soon. Does having ballet experience actually help with figure skating? I might have just regret quitting.

I have a question, I’m 13, and want to learn to skate, maybe even do figure skating eventually... am I too old? I don’t think I will ever do serious competitions but I know the average age is around 5...

No, you're not too old! You can begin learning to skate any age and still be competitive.

Thank you for the tips! My whole life I’ve wanted to figure skate, and until now I didn’t really actually ask my parents about it. Even though I will not be able to start figure skating until next year due to covid , I was wondering, is there any way I could practice before getting out on the rink, should I do off ice work? Or are rollerblades a good solution?

I've had skaters that come to me after skating on rollerblades and they tend to have a lesser learning curve. However, I've never rollerbladed myself so I cannot give you my experience. I have, however, roller-skated and that is TOTALLY different! Many rinks have re-opened so you should be able to get on the ice soon!

Take lessons and get appropriate equipment, including a helmet! Be sure to get fitted for appropriate skates

There is always a possibility if you have a good coach and put in the work. But, even if you don't compete at an elite level, there are still many opportunities to achieve greatness in figure skating!

Hi I’m going to have my first beginner lesson in about a month. I got my skates and their hockey skates. The store said that these skates should be good but you said that possibly no. What do you think?

Are you planning on playing hockey? If so, try them out and see how you do! Most skaters find it easier to learn in figure skates. If you have no plans to play hockey, you do not need hockey skates and I would see if you can return the,. Most stores are not experienced with teaching beginners so they don't have the experience in that area that coaches have. Try to find a shop that knows their stuff! Definitely wear a helmet! And if you keep the hockey skates & feel frustrated, rent a pair of figure skates from the rink until you get the hang of it. You're welcome! Most likely the person at the shop only knows hockey! Some shops don't even sell figure skates.

@ reason I asked was because a coach said “you will need your own skates. It’s best to get fitted at the pro shop.” Would this only apply for a 1 on 1?

That could be the coaches policy. Or, it could be that they have taken you as far as you'll be able to go in rental skates. I have taught skaters where that is the case: They are struggling and I can tell it isn't them - it's the rental skates. So, I explain that I could continue to take their money for lessons but would be doing them a disservice if I continued to try to teach them with rental skates. I've gotten push back from time to time but those who take my advice progress much faster after they get their own skates. Ultimately, you could be wasting your money on lessons and ice time if you are ready to get your own skates and use rental instead - you simply cannot always learn correct technique with rentals, unfortunately.

good video. would you recommend to use a walker for beginner toddler?

Walkers don't really allow skaters to get in the proper position. And, toddlers tend hang over the front of it. The only time that I recommend it is when the child is really struggling.

No, not at all! You don’t need to do separate boots and blades until you’re more advanced!

You can do off-ice work. I have a good warmup you can do as off-ice and other fitness videos that will help too! I’m planning on doing more videos about off-training too!
