I had the same problem, but I got myself some new skates that I really like. They have figure skate blades (so, more stability forwards and backwards, and toe picks to push off of), but they're branded as "recreational" skates, so they're more padded, and they have better ankle support. Look up "VIC Women's Recreational Skate" at Canadian Tire, and you'll find them. I also have really high-arched feet that used to hurt in skates, but I solved that problem with yellow Superfeet insoles. Since we're under lockdown here in Ontario, and just about everything is closed except for our local outdoor rinks, I figured that it was worth it to get myself some better skates so I could enjoy something about winter this year.

I'm one of those people who insists on perfection in all new endeavors, so actually tries nothing! This video was extremely encouraging, and I especially appreciated that the first on-ice lesson was how to fall. It wasn't presented as a "what if," but as an expected consequence. I'm trying to work up the nerve to give it a try, and this video helped!

Lol, I've been roller skating since age two, roller blading since ten, and ice skating (competently) since 16. I'm 36 now. Falling is *never* a what if. I'm a good skater, and I can't even tell you how many times I've scraped my knees, elbows, shins, hands, and even shoulder once because of falls. Nothing deters me, though. I love skating, and I never wanna stop.

Based on my experience running two youth programs and 10 years of coaching this pretty much sums up the first two weeks of any learn to skate program (assuming you're skating once a week). This is a great video for youngsters to learn the absolute basics. Some folks gave her a hard time about wearing a hockey helmet, but wearing a helmet is a requirement -- or strongly suggested -- for most programs. We also want the kids to wear a cage ... but I'm glad the skater in the video decided not to wear the bird cage.

I’m jumping in here late but… I second the helmet advice. I’m a pretty good skater but I still like to push the limits and work on new skills. On occasion I will catch an edge and take a spill. I have hit my head on the ice before. No fun. Wear a helmet!

As a skater myself, I can’t even begin to emphasise how important it is to protect your head. Using a helmet helped me become confident to try new things as a skater until the point where it became a problem with speed etc. I now wear a lighter head protection at practice and none at competitions. I made that choice myself though, knowing how a hit against your head could affect you in a worst case scenario. Small children do not. They should wear a helmet.

Go to public skating sessions as much as possible and practice. If you get one or two private sessions, that will be much more useful than group lessons at your age. Just keep skating and remember if you don't fall, you're not challenging yourself enough. Wear a helmet. Get butt pads or wear roller blading knee pads under your pants so you relax and go for it!

Should I buy all that for beginning skating. If so what brand or helmet would you recommend to buy as well as knee Elbow and hand pads or braces. Any specific type or brand and should I buy padded shorts or padded long pants and any recommendation beings you went through this as a kid and you know what’s good or not in figure Skating. 2 sizes smaller if you play Ice hockey..Go to a hockey rink let them fit you. The smaller you can fit the better. Bend your knees not out spread try to keep them close together. Orient on your chest going forward and look left and right and feel a balance in the middle of your chest.EX. Adjust your weight ..point the left skate to the left if you want to turn left once you start adjust the right leg to it keep your leg close Adjust the stride small at first once you become comfortable spread out your legs. Your riding a bike.. You have to adjust your weight turn the skate..adjust the wheel on turning leg. Apply the other leg for stability. It's an art you got to feel it.
