Attack/Save: STR Save
Damage/Effect: Restrained
Description: Grasping weeds and vines sprout from the ground in a 20-foot square starting from a point within range. For the duration, these plants turn the ground in the area into difficult terrain.
A creature in the area when you cast the spell must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be restrained by the entangling plants until the spell ends. A creature restrained by the plants can use its action to make a Strength check against your spell save DC. On a success, it frees itself.
When the spell ends, the conjured plants wilt away.

I'm in a campaign with effectively 3 ranged players and no front-liners. So this seems like an ideal way to slow enemies (especially in a dungeon) even if they pass the strength checks. Which is one reason why this seems like a good spell to have as it still has an effect even if the restraint aspect of it doesn't end up paying off each time.

03:25 you say poor DEX and mean poor STR... (then go on to mention Gish Mages and Rogues who Max into DEX) Did you forget that the check for Entangle is STR not DEX? The whole point of being restrained is to remove a foes DEX advantage via their weaker STR stat.

Two questions: a) this spell affects a 20x20 square, but says " *A creature* in the area when you cast the spell must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be restrained by the entangling plants until the spell ends." does that mean only one target can be restrained, even if there are multiple creatures in the area? b) If it targets everyone, does the Sorcerer's Metamagic only work on Sorcerer spells? Or can I use it to make my allies Immune the restraint's saving throw? (Assuming I've Multi-Classed)

A) I've always interpreted it as being able to effect multiple creatures. I see where the confusion would be. Although I suppose if a DM wanted to play the game as written, then you would only be able to effect one creature. B) Meta Magic would still be usable with this spell.

Using the indefinite article "a" is just that: indefinite. It could refer to just one or it could refer to a more general case; if I say "an apple is a fruit" that doesn't refer to just one apple, but if I say "I need a screwdriver" then I'm referring to just one tool (or cocktail). You have to judge by context. In this context, it's clear that it affects every creature in the area specified - otherwise they wouldn't have given it an area of effect. If it only affected one creature, they would have just given the spell a maximum range and said "a creature within range" or "one creature within range." If you need more proof that's it's just a semantic choice on the part of the writer, just look at the description for thunderwave. u/Desparil

Disadvantage on Dex + Difficult Terrain + Advantage for other attackers = A perfect opportunity for Fireball. Edit: Also, if the vines wilt but don't disappear, does it count as the material component for Thorn Whip?

I agree! Also I think using the wilting vines as spell components would be AWESOME! Not to mention totally go with the Druids worldview!

As I read the text, I don't see anything verbage about having to use this spell on an enemy or creature. I also don't see anything that says the area you are in has to be viable for the plants/vines or have other foliage in the area in order to use the spell. So hypothetically, could you use this spell to create difficult terrain for 1 minute where there is no terrain (For example a vine ladder or bridge) so long as the vines originate from the ground at some point?

I went to use this spell for the first time on my new character on an Icewind dale campaign and my dm said I couldn't because there were no other plants around and the ground is solid ice... Is this legit or should I be able to use it since it's a conjuration spell??

This would be up to the dm but if he said the ground is ice that gives the argument of everyone should be rolling at disadvantage for dex saves and attacks and have half movement. Also just because its cold doesn't mean there are no plants. But if he wants to be a jerk about it try to use the dried nuts/seeds in your rations and put them in bottles then cast druid craft on them. That way you have little "bombs" to throw and cause plantgrowth/entangle to happen.

As long there is any ground and you are able to fulfill Somatic and Verbal components you can cast Entangle on the ground where the conjured plants crow forth.rget. There actually is a spell for example Plant Growth defines "Target: Plants within a specific area" and Entangle does not have any requirement written in the spell that needs plants.

@@jamessberna1330 Sure, DM can also say the Fireball does not work because it is too cold. Entangle does not have requirements for plants matter thus you can cast it in middle of frozen lake and seventh floor of castle in a desert. Nothing in the spell says it would not work in case there are no plants. Plant Grow specifies it targets the plant life thus showing us it has to be defined if it requires plant life. Your seed idea is called MATERIAL COMPONENT which the spell is missing -.- I'm sorry, but it triggers me when people give freedom to DM to brake spell for no good reason. No, not having a plants for a spell that does not require plants is not a good reason.

@@xezzee oh no I get it. I was giving a workaround in case his dm was a t total prick. I'm sure I'm not the only person that has had the "part time rules lawyer" as a dm before.

@@jamessberna1330 indeed. My DM said I lost my grapple on Wolf because it bit me ... I was too drunk to realise that on the moment 😞 = I did a thing that did nothing! Noice!
