Description: You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more dart for each slot level above 1st.

The reason why the shield spell can absorb a magic missile is because the netherese developed both of this spells and created them with that idea in mind to being able to protect themself before a magic missile.

Hear we go magic missiles the spell I ignored because when I heard story’s of DND everyone would tell me magic missiles sucked and is all you had if you were a wizard in first edition. Now it’s my favorite spell and I made a character around it but first story time. The first time I used magic missiles was on my lizard foke claric we finished a quest and the DM had us roll on a loot table I got a wand of magic missiles. Fast forward to the next town and there’s a side quest to kill a monster attacking farm animals it turned out to be a displacer beast and the rouge and monk wanted its skin to craft a cloak. I had a pet blink dog and I wanted the meat to feed to my dog. So we had a bet who ever dose the most damage to the monster gets to decide how to loot it. Combat starts I ended up going first I pull out my wand and fire all 7 charges launching a shit ton of missiles. I won the bet.

Magic missile is incredibly reliable damage. A lot of people in the comments seem to think it is weak, but taking into account chance to miss, it’s the 2nd strongest 1st level damage spell. To everyone wanting a damage boost, there are several features in game that boost damage of this spell. Hex blades curse boosts the damage of each dart used against that single target. Evocation wizard gets to add INT mod to the darts at level 10. These can make the spell even more potent since the magic missile is a single damage roll for all the darts.

Just regular Hex would add 1d6 necrotic damage for each hit, so in combination, 1d4+1+1d6 per hit for as many darts used.

saintpaulsnail The Hex spell doesn’t interact with the Magic Missile spell at all. The Hex spell requires attack rolls, magic missile involves no attack rolls. This would work with “Jim’s magic missile” spell, since it actually uses attack rolls.

@@binolombardi incorrect, it does not require a attack roll, it just says "you deal an extra 1d6 necrotic damage to the target whenever you hit it with an attack" so this is under this rule set as it does not say attack roll this would happen when attacking a creature, or when you making a melee attack. Jonathon Goodrich You’re incorrect. The hexblades curse is a class feature for the hexblade subclass of “the Hexblade” in Xanathars guide to everything. Your confusing this feature with the spell you linked.

a must have against spellcasters. unless they can shield, they have to take guarunteed damage AND have to roll 3 seperate concentration rolls to maintain concentration spells. also, since theyre more fragile, they sit further back, but thats not a big problem for this spells 120ft range.

For everyone who thinks this spell is 1) too weak OR 2) OP. As written, this spell is perfectly balanced. It doesn't do a lot of damage, but it does force damage which is very rarely resisted. It hits automatically and there are very few things that defend against it. In other words, perfectly balanced AND totally ripe for munchkining. There are about a hundred ways to willfully misinterpret magic missile so that becomes the most powerful damage dealing spell in the game. The main one is figuring out a way to add a damage bonus to every single missile. Most of these ways violate the rules because the game designers aren't idiots and they don't want a first level spell wrecking the game. Unfortunately, they've added so many extra subclasses no one seems to have given a thought to how all the powers affect the basic rules. Can you add Hex spell to the damage? No. Hex only works for "attacks". MM is not an "attack". Can you add Empowered Evocation? According to RAW and RAI yes, but only to ONE missile. Can you add Hexblade curse? Maybe? But if were the DM I wouldn't allow it. Bottom line, do you want to play in a mid-level game where the DM says "the enemy wizard shoots magic missiles at you for 90 points of damage. You have a shield spell? No? Well, you're dead"? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If you think you've found some ridiculous exploit in the rules you're probably misinterpreting them. And if you aren't the rule needs to be fixed, not exploited.

@@ChancesSpellbook As the central warlock class feature Eldritch Blast is reasonably balanced, but dull. Sure, it's the best attack cantrip by far but that's what warlocks do. But I wish melee warlocks had something to match it. As it is, you do at least as much damage with blasts as you can with a pact blade, and ranged attacks are usually a lot more convenient. I think the hexblade was supposed to remedy that but most of the hexblade features apply to eldritch blast too. The one place where eldritch blast looks really broken is when sorcerers dip two levels of warlock just so they can quicken eldritch blast. I haven't seen it in practice enough to decide if it's OP, but it sounds really boring. In general, blasting sorcerers seem more like comic book superheroes than fantasy heroes to me, but then again, I was raised on Moorcock, Leiber and Howard. Harry Potter didn't come out until I was in my 20s.

Eldritch Knight: "I may be a weak spell caster... Or strong, depending... But 36 Magic Missiles in one turn is my specialty."... 3x before my turn begins. 3x before and 3x after Action Surge. 3x at the end of my turn. (Feats) Plus... I get 2x Action Surge near lv20.

Magic Missile is really good if you have a Ranger in your party that has feature 'Colossus Slayer'. It lets the ranger do an extra 1d8 damage if the target's HP is below it's maximum. So right at the start of the battle you will want to fire a magic dart into each target so the ranger gets that bonus damage on all the targets you just hit. The Ranger will always want to hold their action until the Wizard has done so. XD

"Colossus slayer" activates only when you "hit a creature with a weapon attack"; that is not the case of magic missile, wich is a spell.

@@Luuuukich Yeah, the Ranger will be using their bow/weapon attack. I never said anything about a Wizard having 'Colossus Slayer'. The point of the Wizard using Magic Missile first is so all the targets don't have full HP, which allows the Ranger to get their 'Colossus Slayer' damage on any of the targets the Wizard damaged. So even if the Ranger's target is killed by another party member before it's the Rangers turn, all the other targets have already been damaged by the wizard. You seem to have completely misunderstood my comment.

Magic missile is my favorite spell. Once played a draconian bloodline sorcerer and I mostly had fire spells then the DM during that time send us into a forest full of big spiders to hunt and I was forbidden from using fire spells, lest I start to burn down the whole forest. So I heard that and was like: "okay that sucks" before I realized that my sorcerer also had Magic missile and simple replied to the DM "okay, I will just keep spamning magic missile then" That worked out so well that I always gonna pick up that spell if I gonna created another sorcerer again. 😁

Damage is weak. But you don't miss. If you have a Wand of Magic Missile and just unload the full charge count its a good way to get burst damage. But if they've got Shield, you're screwed unless you nullify their ability to do Reactions.

I really don't get why the Artificer doesn't get this! It fits them perfectly! Surprised they don't at least get the wand as an option! it would very much fill in some of their specific issues in some of the subclasses.

I use it to get past death saves quickly, NPCs always come with Revivify and this has become a necessity.

But do you roll d4 and apply that number to the damage of all the missiles, or do you roll a d4 to determine the damage of each missile separately?

You may have to roll in bulk, or take the average of 2 damage from the d4. Or you know... A bucket of d4s is something.

Whoa, hold on... I haven't played for around 16 years, and I remember this spell being very different. Back then, at 1st level, only 1 missile could be cast, and you would get more as you level. So has that changed now? So a 1st level caster can fire 3 missiles doing 3D4+3 damage at first level? Can it be cast using a level 9 slot for... what... 11D4+11 damage?

Story 2 become of how much I love magic missiles after story one I made a character around them named Sam fox the second because Sam Surface to air missiles and when a pilot fires a heat seeker he says fox 2. He was a human divine sorcerer with 2 magic initiate feats wizard and sorcerer and took magic missiles both times. He was a grumpy old man that like to get drunk and calmed Magic missiles were grate cus he can get as drunk as he wants and doesn’t have to aim. But would get pissy with guiding bolt saying “da fuck Is this there nothing guiding about it I spit on the face of the man who named it” yeah he had this weird French Russia accent

One time I was playing a dnd game on an phone app and this guy wanted to do a game of thrones type of Dnd so only Human race. My first ever dnd so I wanted to play the wizard and I picked magic missile. Long story short early in the session we had to go to The Red Keep when we arrive we met the king happy to see us. But than assassins drop from the roof and charge the king to kill him. I cast magic missile to stop the one assasin that was making a bee line to the king. The DM at the time ask me to roll for the damage or something. But one of the players stepped in and said I didnt have to roll it because magic missile does not miss. The DM was like "ooooooohhhhhhhh" In my first ever play through of playing DND without know I managed to derail the DMS campaign in 1 session in less than 15 minutes. The DM had to change up the outcome by having a portal magically appear and send us somewhere else. So he really wanted the king to be dead possible frame us for the murder. But I go to say I feel pretty proud of myself for doing that in my first play through. Sadly the DM didnt respond back to my text so it died there :(

Hm....another Ermac Arcane Amendment here. I do like the idea of just this is a hard hitting instant 1st Level spell. However, I find the damage value to be a bit...uh....weak in comparison? Consider this. The category of thr 1st Level Spells have heavier hitting spells, like Burning Hands, Catapult, Chromatic Orb, Ice Knife, Witch Bolt and even Thunderwave. All of which do a damage die from a d6 to a d12. So how about this, instead of 1d4+1 Force Damage per dart, instead it's.....something simple like 1d8+Spellcasting Modifier? That way the Caster gets more out of Magic Missile by investing more into their spellcasting ability. And of course, you get more Darts the higher level slots you use. But my point is that the caster still gets a bit of heavy smack if they need to cast Magic Missile. Granted, this means stuff like the Magic Missile Wand will need an Attunement requirement, but if that means Magic Missile gets more leverage out of itself then ok.

The reason for it's low damage is because it hits. Minimum damage of 4. Only casting shield or a few magic items can stop it. It's not flashy but it does it's job

Something I like to do is flavor each magic missile for the character I'm playing Abjuration: the wizard condenses a small pressurized orb of air that on contact will pop and thus force damage Conjuration: the wizard summons random objects at the target that after contact dissipate. (shoe wear, frying pans, tomatoes, feral kittens from the feywild) evocation: *finger gun animation* (that or if this wizard is focusing on a particular element make it as them ENVOKING a white and misty form of their element, something pure before it completes form) Illusion: either they change the appearance of the spell to something lesser like a water balloon or squeaky toy, or mid flight it disappears from sight.

Okay. Now here's an Ermac Breaker Build. Normal Human Evocation Wizard. Carry that Build to 20, maxing your Intelligence and getting your everything else as high as possible. Use a 5th Level Slot for Magic Missile, then Overchannel it. That's straight up 4+1+5 Force Damage (Empowered Evocation) per dart. So for each dart is 10 Force Damage, and you do max damage on every single dart. So all together you do 70 Force Damage with a 1st Level Spell. That's almost as much maximum damage as 5 maxed out Agonizing Eldritch Blasts. Even if you don't Overchannel it, using a 9th Level slot grants you 11 Darts of 1d4+1+5 Force Damage. And if you roll well on all of those d4s, then you could possibly do 110 Force Damage in one turn!

Blaze Magic missile Requires: - sight was f the targets - targets to be a creature - a 1d4+1 multiplied by darts - 120ft range - no attack or saving throw It’s simplicity and effectiveness limit its ability to be used for anything except damage. Even the glowing dart part of the wording which can be inferred to mean it generates a small amount of light is useless as you would need to be able to see your target to cast in the first place.
