POV Ride. The 2021 Gold Wing DCT has an automatic transmission. It can also be shifted manually via paddle type shifters. When shifting manually the Gold Wing morphs into a much more aggressive motorcycle, both in performance as well as the exhaust note. Adults only please.

I'm up in the Redwoods in Northern California and did Sport Mode paddle shifting for the first time. Holy balls! This bike is whatever you want it to be. I'm going to do this a lot. This is a nuclear reactor ready to blow. Wow

Yep, the DCT in Sport Mode on the Goldwing is a wonderful thing, especially with that lovely sounding flat six. I didn't use Sport too much when I got my 2018 but I use it much more often now. 😎

Wanted to let you know this video convinced me to get a new Goldwing DCT. I had a 2015 40th year anniversary model. It was a very good bike but arthritis in my hands made it difficult to clutch. I love my DCT! It is absolutely awesome. It is not a sport touring bike. It is a touring crotch rocket. It is amazing how such a heavy bike can be so quick. Thank you for your video!!

Great video! I wish I could afford the Goldwing..... BUT! I have a 2014 CXT700 DCT and I LOVE IT!!! I ONLY ride it in manual! There's no point not to! I shift up and down 100% of the time! I will tell you my friends are amazed about how quick my bike is, including how quick I can slow down from downshifting. This DCT bike has made me a better rider in my opinion. I can focus more on maneuvering and handling over thinking ahead when I will need to "shift" up or down. Thanks, great video!

Tremendous video thank you. You're right about the back rest and it's on my list of things to do this Spring. I rarely use Sport mode except on the highway in high speed traffic of 70+ MPH. In those conditions I just leave her in 7th gear and filter my way through the cages and big rigs. On back country lanes I use manual mode and mostly 6th gear. The engine is so torquey that it easily pulls 6th down to 35 MPH so shifting is optional. The big DCT is a magic carpet ride to be sure.
@SDWalta

Great to hear from you! Yes I agreee, I am finding manual mode is ideal for the back country where automatic mode can sometimes put you in the wrong gear for a given situation. Thanks for the info!

@@SDWalta I found that out early on in a tight corner when the DCT downshifted unexpectedly. There was no real drama but I decided better to use manual mode in those conditions. The tranny will downshift in manual mode (as I'm sure you've found out) but only when absolutely necessary and it's so gentle you can barely perceive it. I also find that the DCT requires a whole new set of skills and is not just a "twist and go" affair. It's fun getting the hang of it and in 9,000 miles I've only reached for a clutch lever twice. Conversely I find I reach for the non-existent cruise control when riding my other bikes all the time ;)

Unfortunately for many who choose the manual Wing, they never realized how well the DCT’s manual mode performs. And the convenience of having the shifters at your finger tips when on the highway pegs is such a benefit whether you are in any of the AUTO modes or the MANUAL mode. I ride mostly in TOUR mode and because this mode tends to keep things smoother and quieter by utilizing the higher gears, if I am on a grade and want just that added kick in the ass, I simply press the left hand thumb shifter to jump down a gear. And the shift is smooth and instantaneous. They really have this DCT figured out. If any one doubts the engineering and technology, look at all the high end sports cars using it almost exclusively now. Very difficult to buy manual sticks and just not even an option in some top tier brands. And if anyone thinks they will be missing out on the visceral feel of the bike, replay this video or go take a long test drive where you can try the different modes and use the finger shifters. I first test drove a 2019 and thought the very new DCT shifting was a tad clunky and I really never tried all the modes or manually shifting it. At the end of the ride, I decided to hold off and see how it developed. I also was not a fan of the redesigned smaller tour pack. But last spring once I learned they increased the size of the trunk and made a few more improvements, I pulled the trigger on a 2021 and have never regretted the move. I had been seriously considering a next move being the BMW K1600GTL or the K1600B. Yes, the Beemers have a higher top speed and make a solid argument for a bit better handling and maybe appearance, but as far as checking all boxes when it comes to long distance touring, or I should say sport-touring, the new Wings are in my opinion the bike to own.

Great observations. I agree completely. It’s hard not to be impressed by this new version of the gold wing including the DCT. Though in fairness I haven’t tried the manual version. But I have ridden many in the past and probably have a good feel for what it will be like. I think you are correct in thinking, like with high end cars the bikes will also head toward the amazing automatic transmission technology. I just love the way you no longer need to focus so much on manual shifting which requires hand and foot actions. I feel it makes it easier to ride better and more balanced and in control. Enjoy! Stay safe.

The Honda DCT downshifts only to prevent engine stalling. If you want a 'normal' downshift you need to use the 'paddles' yourself. The upshifting is as you described. If left in auto-shift mode the DCT will accelerate faster than in manual mode! Why? The DCT can shift faster than any person can due to maximizing the red line without visually recognizing the limit and thus shifts at optimum RPM instantaneously. Good Rides

It's actually quite simple. You just engage the front brake holding the lever for a moment. The hill holder icon lights up on the dash. Twist the throttle and go when ready it automatically disengages. If you find you need more time simply engage the brake again. Of course the promised video will make it clear.
@SDWalta
@SDWalta 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah George is right on. I would just add that when the HSA begins to timeout the indicator on the dash will start to blink. Once the blinking stops it will release HSA and allow the bike to roll back. I like to wait till the blinking before I use the throttle. My thinking is if I go earlier I might be doing a mini brake stand, and driving with the brake enabled. By waiting I am thinking I would be doing that for only a small period of time. But knowing Honda, the brake may just release when you give it throttle. I can get to the video tomorrow. Been distracted by my struggling golf game😖

quick question does honda recommend letting off gas when shifting manually in sport mode?
@SDWalta
@SDWalta 11 ай бұрын
Good question. In using paddle shifters on cars , it was not expected to let off gas between shifting. Same with automatic transmissions. So I just expected the same from the DCT. Though I did back off the throttle when going at it hard. I was worried of red lining it.

Yes. I actually use Apple car play a lot. The navigation is much better and music options are excellent. The one quirk is that I have to disconnect then re connect the cable to my iPhone after shutting off the bike, then starting it up again. Else it won’t provide Apple car play as an option on the bikes display.

@SDWalta
@SDWalta 2 жыл бұрын
That is true. There isn’t any more power. It is just staying in each gear longer in sport mode. And you may be right that tour and sport are the same when you just go full throttle from a stop since then tour mode will adjust to also stay in gear longer. Thanks for the feedback.

Ride looks jerky on video. Maybe because you are in sport mode. No thanks to DCT, if you're going to ride in manual mode most of the time, buy a manual. Besides, it is really that hard to shift a bike. I find the shifting on the bike to be part of the experience. I have DCT in the car and yes nice to have both worlds, but manual is a more engaging and rewarding experience.
@SDWalta
@SDWalta 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a super smooth riding experience with DCT. i can make it jerky by riding it rough which can be fun. When I was younger it wasn’t as much of an issue using the clutch but I always felt it awkward to upshift with my left foot. So the DCT has relieved me of that issue. Let’s me just focus on driving the bike and enjoying the scenery. But I get the allure of using the manual transmission. When I rode dirt it was a blast to spin the rear tire and pop wheelies etc. thanks for the feedback! Stay safe.
