Thank you for the video. First I've seen where the engine remains in place. I have gained confidence just by seeing you can gain access from the side through the wheel arch. Still don't know whether to tackle the job myself, have a local garage do the work (circa £1000) or trade the vehicle in.

Hey I'm glad it helped! It really wasn't too bad of a job. But a few things that helped me were. 1. Take lots of pictures with your phone! 2. Organize the parts on cardboard as you take them out! 3. Consider replacing the water pump at the same time because it's tied into the ballast chain. But if you've got a little mechanical skill you can probably do it. Take your time don't rush. Triple check absolutely everything (so you don't get the timing mix up 🙄). It's definitely more intimidating than it is hard. Good luck. If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out.

I just got an 07 Pontiac G5 2.2 vin-F (167k miles) about 2 weeks ago, It made a tapping noise for the 1st few seconds at start up & went away! When i first saw the car it was already running & drove good minus some bad tire's, or so I thought! All 4 rims are bent, All the wheel studs are all ruined & all of the lug nuts but, the biggest issue is, my driver lower control arm bushing. Found that out on Friday as I took it to get 4 new tire's! Then My supervisor messages me to tell me that we we are not scheduled for the next 2 weeks! what a joy=no money for bills so, everything must get pushed back! I installed a new timing tensioner only, The noise at start up went away!!! The chain was tight, the guide bolt that is known to back out was tight! Purchased a new window regulator, wiring kit, installation kit & antenna extension, fixed the back seat (previous owner installed the cable incorrectly, The cable to open back seats) It needs a few things yet! At 3 min 27 sec of your video, When you are showing proper can gear alignment, There is an axe in the background with a rotting handle, Please for the love of God, Get some boiled linseed oil onto the axe handle please? They sell it at Lowe's & other store's!!! if no boiled linseed oil, probably any oil is better then none! wd-40, PB Blaster, Sorry but, It was killing me!!!! Though, Beings that I only stabbed in the screw in tensioner, removed the valve cover & then unbolted the old tensioner & PUT MY SMALL HEAD EXTENDABLE MAGNET INTO THE HOLE TO ENSURE THAT NO PIECES FELL INTO THE ENGINE, & Thank God that I used that smaller magnet because that tensioner came out in pieces!!! One day, I will do the entire timing chain but, for now, mine looked really tight! Idk how many previous owners, engine runs strong! I saw yellow chalk marks on the valve cover so, either just the valve cover or, the entire engine came from a junk yard... At least it runs good!
@benq.mechanical
@benq.mechanical 3 жыл бұрын
Haha. Thanks I will take care of the axe. It's since been stored inside which is preserving it at the moment. But yeah a little oil would help 👍 Sounds like you've had a bit of a run around with work and such. Hopefully things get figured out there. Good to hear all you needed was the tensioner on yours. I tried that first, but need the whole chain on mine🙄 Now you've yours fixed it'll last a long time. Just change oil they're good engines.

Easiest way to tell which cam is which when looking at the engine is, whichever side the exhaust manifold is on, the cam closest to it is the exhaust cam & the cam closest to the intake is the intake cam!

Is there a way to adjust the timing without marks? I took the chain out and my stupidity allowed me to turn the the sprocket s individually, which turned the cams. Now I have no idea where I am at. Call me an idiot because I am. 2015 Chev malibu 2.5

Ugh. That is not a fun spot lol. Does the 2.5 L look the same under the valve cover? You're going to need to find Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke for cylinder #1. There should be a video on how to do that on KZfaq. That'll get the intake camshaft lined up. From there you should be able to adjust the exhaust cam so its the opposite. Once the camshafts are lined up at TDC the sprockets will be lined up again so you can use the timing marks 😁 Let me know if that helps.

@@benq.mechanical kzfaq.info/get/bejne/faiTddVy2qmbpH0.html . This is a small video of my cams. Do you think i'm 180 degrees off on the timing ? Thanks for the help.
@benq.mechanical
@benq.mechanical 2 жыл бұрын
@@cartroublewannafix8611 If you find TDC, on compression stroke, the intake valve should be closed, and the piston all the way to the top. Right? You could verify that by sticking a long screwdriver in the spark plug hole. From there you should be able to align timing chain unique link to the intake sprocket then adjust your exhaust sprocket back where it would line up right?

@@benq.mechanical So I did get tdc, the piston up. And you say the intake valves should be closed. What about on the exhaust side , how should that be? That's where i get all the resistance of it springing back. Thanks for the help.

@@cartroublewannafix8611 exhaust should be closed too, but the cam lobes should be the opposing direction. On the 2.2 & 2.4 if you look at the back cam lobes they point roughly to the 2 o'clock and 11 o'clock position 😊

So with the #1 cylinder at tdc on the exhaust stroke, would the piston be at the top? In your video, The piston was not at tdc, meaning that it was not at the top of the stroke/ top of the cylinder, WHERE IS THE #1 PISTON WHEN ALL THE TIMING MARKS ARE ALLIGNED? NOW IM GLAD TO HAVE SEEN YOUR VIDEO! SO, THE PISTON IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ALL THE WAY UP AT THE TOP OF THE CYLINDER?
@benq.mechanical
@benq.mechanical 3 жыл бұрын
I believe cylinder #1 is all the way up when the #1 cam lobes are pointed downward at tdc. But brain is a little fuzzy at the moment 😅. But the biggest thing to remember is just line up the timing marks. The chain jumped on mine so I had to start at square one and retime it. If you replace the chain before that's an issue, all you need to do line up the uniquely colored link and your good to go! I posted a link in the description to another video that shows the process. 😊

@@benq.mechanical Yep, you read that right, not a damn mark left on it. Must have been original and I assume there's a shit ton of miles on it. The marking of the arrow was just plain gone. And yes, I did use that vid. I got it all back together, cover and valve cover back on, ready for it's new home. Do you by chance know what hours would be billed for this project? Both in vehicle and out. For a number of reasons, the biggest being that I'd never done one before, it took a ton of time so I can't just bill him for how long it took and I'm not built back up since my last back surgery to justify a labor guide. Thanks!

@@benq.mechanical Yea, that's what I'm hoping. If I had known there was a timing mark on them at some point I could have used the "similarly colored link to identify the correct tooth and marked it. I wasn't actually going to change the balance shaft timing set. What happened was that I had to change the water pump while I was in there and not knowing there even was a mark to go by I just took the chain off and cleaned all the bolts up like new and cleaned the guides. I watched the vid and I was like, "oh shit! There's a mark and now it's not visible. Oh well, at least I can say I learned how to correctly do the job for next time...but I REALLY hope there isn't a next time! LOL

I am hoping that you can assist me? I only have to.orrow to complete my timing job! 07 pontiac G5 2.2 vin-F. I think that what happened was, I forgot to straighten the key on the crank & allign it at the 12 o-clock position b4 buttoning up everything, & I probably didn't put the slack in the timing chain b4 installing my cam gears, & finishing up. However, my rear cam (exhaust cam) seems to be pointing more towards 11 or 11:30 rather then 10 o-clock. What advice would you recommend,? ,I am hoping to remove the main timing chain, & all its components ,& trying again? What is throwing me off is, the uniquely colors links are on the cam gears but, on my exhaust cam, the cam gears but the cam marks are pointing closer to 11 o clock and rather then 10 & 2. What is your thoghts?
@benq.mechanical
@benq.mechanical 3 жыл бұрын
Oh boy. Nothing like being under pressure! From your description I would try the following. 1. Take everything off. Pull the cam sprockets and make sure you've got them on right. I believe each gear is specific to the shaft it sits on. 2. Take out your #1 spark plug and stick a piece of clean paper towel in the plug bore. Then rotate the engine till the paper towel pops out. Then you know for sure you are at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke for piston 1. 3. Then go back through the process of aligning the uniquely colored link. Everything should line up from there.

The front cover? Hmm...I'm not sure what vehicle you're working on, but the HHR did have a couple holes through the frame that a guy could reach through. But I can't I remember having issues reaching the cover bolts. May have gotten creative with wrenches though lol. What about taking part of the motor mount off? Does that buy some room? Sounds terribly frustrating...joys of backyard wrenching 🙄
