One night back in August 1987 after a party at Disney's Vista Village (before Vista Way), I went out to the 7-11 with a video camera and a couple friends to see what people purchase at 2:30am. In this particular video, my buddy Ken is behind the camera. I'm the guy with the Orange Slurpee. More info on this video can be found here: tinyurl.com/1987seveneleven

It’s weird how they don’t recoil from the camera. Today, it’s considered rude and intrusive to shove a camera in someone’s face, as you have no idea where that video could end up. But here, no ones afraid of the camera or any exposure, since they had no reason to believe that this video would wind up anywhere. Pretty strange to see.

Well the thing is the person holding the camera's actually pretty nice and charismatic, unlike most of the people who hold up cameras to people's faces today in order to *mostly* shame them and make fun of them. I can confirm. Having been raised in Russia, which during the 90s was the same as this in terms of technology (if not further back), I was absolutely shocked when I moved to the US in 2005 and how weird and shy the kids were. It didn't affect me though as by the time I moved (at the age of 15) I had already developed strong social skills and very high and unshakable confidence. It started really bad around 2010-2011 when I was finishing college and smartphones became more popular. If anything people should take it upon themselves to develop the skills and build the confidence. I personally love a challenge.

When I lived in Trinity Texas, it was almost like a whole separate little world, nothing but friendly people in what we called a"subdivision". Whether you know everyone or not, doesn't matter, they always smile and ask how you are.. But Houston Texas was way different. Same as where I'm from, Wildwood, New Jersey, home of scum and junkies where everyone thinks they're a "Gangsta" but in reality would get their add handed to them in the real ghetto.😂I swear, I don't belong here!

FrobblOo The issue isn't that it's a complete culture overhaul though, there will always be friendly people and there will always be snobby anti social cunts, sure. Nostalgia obviously plays part in the sadness and happiness that this video brings, but it's a fact that drug culture runs far more rampant these days, and with the advent of social media, more and more people are beginning to feel a false sense of entitlement. When I go out, sometimes I'll have an absolute fucken blast, but more often than not, I run into a large amount of people with superiority complexes that can only be attributed to internet culture that has only emerged over the last 5-10 years. So of course we can still find friendly fun seekers and party like its 1987 today, it's just that they aren't as prevalent.

Maybe it's not only nostalgia.... I feel like so many things are so much better today : fashion, food, style in general, technology of course. Thanks to the internet, our lives have been improved A LOT : we can learn everything. How to speak a language, how to cook, how to style our hair and put our make up on, how to start a business, how to make a world tour.... Being a teenager was a nightmare till a few years ago. Except for a small minority from the upper class, nobody knew what to do with their hair, with their bad skin.... Young people were a lot more socially awkward because they couldn't improve their social skills on the internet. STILL, even if technically, except for music, a lot of things sucked..... the MINDSET was different. The 80's were about EXCITEMENT.... people felt like the world entered a new era of modernity and there was that "everything is possible" feeling. Now the most overwhelming feeling is FEAR..... fear of the future, of terrorism, of demography, of poverty. My mom always told me how young people didn't think about their old days during the 80's; Never. People didn't even think about buying houses..... renting was enough. People didn't think about the future, and that's a pretty strong indicator of a happier time for me.

It's crazy how today people act offended or scared if a stranger talks to them, and especially if they're filming.

@natalie garavagno I've lived in the south my entire life, and while there is still some old time culture around, it's becoming less and less common.

@natalie garavagno Oh yeah, I can see that.. I grew up in Florida, then Nashville TN, now Greenville SC, and we're prob more laid back and friendly than the rest of the country.. but not by much. I prefer the old fashioned lifestyle of actually knowing your neighbors first name, but with people's faces glued to smart phones and Instagram and Facebook all day, it's harder for that to happen. Every Christmas I'm surprised by how exactly 0 kids are outside playing.. it's unreal to me. And I'm only 31.

It's easy, you just start talking. I talk to strangers all the time. I have been asked where l was from once, had everyone laughing. It's easier without a effing mask

Seeing someone smoke in a 7-11 is otherworldly
@JohnSmith-ys4nl

It happened all the time. You could smoke inside almost anywhere in 1987. States didn't start passing laws against it until the 1990's.

actually no. I agree with you to an extent. people don't welcome randoms like they used to. disregard my last comment.

i think a lot of the reason why people don't welcome randoms also has to do with the political climate, everyone is very hostile and on edge

im shooketh that definitely hasn't helped things. There's a divide right now that has split up our country. So much venom being spewed on both sides. I just sit back and shake my head. Cheers to you.

We also have smartphones to dissociate from our surroundings. We as a result only end up caring to talk to who we know instead of the random behind us on line.

Is that a rhetorical question? Most everyone was a character of sorts before the advent of constant, silent online communication.

People social skills were much better back in the day since we had to constantly go outside for entertainment. You can tell people were more comfortable socializing.

I "totally" agree. I was a junior in HS in 87, and had NO IDEA that in 2024 how f' up we would become. So sad. I miss these "normal" fun, crazy days. We have lost SO much in way of just having a good time and relating with others.
