This is nothing personal towards any archaeologists out there. Just my own personal views to show how strongly I feel about how certain people in the world have the right to dig up treasures of the dead yet some of us with a metal detector are not even allowed to dig up treasure in many places which are not graves. One rule for one walk of life and one rule for another. The world and its rules are joke worthy.

I’m an Iraqi veteran I was sent there right after September 11 and I think that is incredible what they’re doing with the soldiers not only do they get to keep working and keep a sense of pride but they’re out in the field contributing like they always do! Thank you for the video that’s amazing. I’m sad to find out that your channel has ended and I just found it but I’ll keep watching.

I have a suggestion for you. Do a fishing Channel, or turn this into one! This channel was build of excitement. I loved all these videos. Your personality is golden as well. I think it's different because they are trying to learn about these people so they can better document history they are also trying to preserve it as much as possible same thing with their bodies. I can see where you are coming from but they aren't selling this stuff off for personal gain on the black market never to be seen again, I think of it more as working out who these people were and how they lived and died and what their lives we're like. Good video I like this concept. 🙂

The problem with just ignoring these finds is this was before written history and even most of that is lost to time. This is the only way to even glimpse how things were that far back. The evidence isn't getting any less degraded over time. To ignore it now is to willingly let what little pieces of ancient history we can find, die forever. I can understand how an archaeologist of all kinds of people, wouldn't be inclined to let that happen.

Dan you have posed a very good question, insomuch they were interned with the expectation of an everlasting resting place, they have been desecrated. As you see in Egypt the archaeologist lay blame to tomb robbers, but them in themselves are grave robbers.

I suppose the difference between grave robbing and archaeology is that grave robbing is for personal gain and will only be seen by a small group of individuals where as archaeologists did it up and usually it is sent to museums for the general public to enjoy and see a taste of previous cultures. Whilst this is not much better than grave robbing at least it helps us better understand and preserve the past even though digging up graves no matter how old is wrong.

I understand what your saying Dan, however, the main difference would be: Robbers recklessly dig for personal profit. They have little or no interest in the history or the archaeological context. More often than not, the finds, which may include gems, gold or other precious items are just sold on to collectors, or worse still, melted down or broken up for monetary value. Robbers are certainly not archaeologists. Not only do we lose the finds themselves, but we also lose the historical context of the grave and the placement of the grave goods. Archaeologists dig carefully and slowly, recording all the context of the grave, not just the items of monetary value. They operate under licence and as such the items will, in most cases end up on display for future generations to view and learn about their ancestral past. I suppose the real question should be: Why are you digging up mounds that we know are graves? The answer is fairly simple. People have robbed graves for financial gain for thousands of years. They do not care about the history or context of the burial. Today the problem has been made worse as we have the equipment and knowledge to discover where these finds are likely to be, and at what depth. Robbers will always be robbers and the history is then lost forever. Is there a right or wrong? The first is essentially robbing graves, The second is robbing graves to secure the historic items for both education and for future generations. They attempt to complete the task before the Robber beats them to it.

Hello Dan, robbery in ancient times is worst because around the time of the thefts there will have been family, friends or even if a few generations after the death, still people left around to care. It's not, or rather shouldn't be considered theft in modern times simply because so much time has passed that there is nobody left to object and the grave has become considered historic or of historic significance. It may need digging up to record it and to save the treasures for future generations to learn from. I totally understand why you hate the idea of exhumation you wouldn't be human not to feel some sadness even if the person who's grave it is died thousands of years ago, ancestors should be respected and the fact you have respect for that is a credit to you.

Dan it depends on what the people do with the things they dig up . If they put them in a museum and study them they are archeologists and not stealing . If they sell them to make money then its robbery Get it ?

I suppose it depends whether there are any living family still existing, otherwise one way of looking at it is that it's simply forgotten precious metals and artefacts buried there, wasting away for eternity.

As an old retired historian & archaeologist, let me explain the difference.... archaeologists excavate such things so they can be preserved and studied by scholars worldwide, and placed in museums for the public to view. It has ZERO to do with the financial value. "Treasure hunters," "relic hunters," and others of that ilk do it purely for what they can sell it for. To hell with the historical importance regarding the culture they came from. An archaeologist, historian, or even a responsible detectorist's first thought when he uncovers something is, "What can we learn from this? What does it tell us?" A "relic hunter" or "treasure hunter's" first thought is, "What's it worth?" There's a vast, huge distance between the two.

I don't have a horse in this race, and I love ya Dan. My opinion is that the difference between an archaeologist and a guy with a metal detector is that often I would *assume* that nothing would be cataloged or studied. It's placement etc and the history of the item is lost. I believe the goal of archaeology is science more than it is treasure hunting.

Robbery is for profit, benefiting only the immediate few. And it in the process discards and destroys historical and cultural information. Archaeology on the other hand strives to preserve the past. Which becomes available to and benefits all of mankind. You and I can eventually learn from archaeological finds. When I was in my early twenties I was in my thinking extremely fortunate to be able to see a traveling exhibition that came to my hometown, displayed at the New Orleans Museum of Art in New Orleans ,Louisiana. This wouldn't have happened if the "find" had been robbed. The exhibition was on the road so to speak, while a proper museum was being build to house the exhibit. And certainly some of the admissions fees to the exhibitions at the various museums hosting the tour aided in the building of that future museum. The exhibition I'm speaking of was the Treasures of Tutankhamen which among other objects included the well known gold death mask. I couldn't afford to travel to Egypt to see that exhibit in the museum that now exist, built specifically for that collection.

Mr Dan . You're spot on. Plus what gets me. Is the graves of WW2 soldiers.are being dug up and there not nearly as old. I've hunted civil war sites and was afraid I'd dig up a soldier by accident.my grandpaw found the remains of a union soldier . On top of a mountain in 1965. He got ahold of the police and forest service. Who sent him back to his home state. Best they could figure he was from Kentucky.

Those who write the history gets to choose the spin of the story. With modern tech, they should not need to disturb the sites.

Am I the only one that thinks it’s BLINDINGLY obvious what the difference is? If they were ‘robbers’ - you wouldn’t have set eyes on these pieces, you wouldn’t have any idea they’d been found - they would just have been melted / sold off on the black market.

Dan I understand what you're saying it's a double edged sword! A hundred years from now they will be call thief's but now it's a person with a PhD saying its science of the past! No its money driven, book deals, movie deals, TV deals, money Grant's, etc. I have in a box native American artifacts that my mom found in the late 40's as a kid, stuff I found around lakes when I was a kid in the 70's some have been in museums! Some haven't Oklahoma has a state law all native American artifacts have to be returned!! But as I found out the loophole is back to the tribe it came from!!!??? Out of all my stuff only 1 was identified as Cherokee! Lots of red tape!! Then I couldn't give it away!! Told no monetary value!!! I know this probably don't help, but for this person I tried!!!

Kinda the reason is because they dig stuff up to find out about history and teach that to the world. The problem is that if they find something special and put it back well then some people might dig it up at night and take it for personal gain. Maybe melt down the gold etc... Good news flash though ;)

Excavation of graves is one of the few ways that we can find out details about our ancient history. I think humanity's present and future are enriched by this information. To get the most information from these excavations it should be performed by trained individuals who properly document the finds and publish the details so that everyone can benefit from the information. When untrained individuals do it valuable information is lost and the motive usually is personal greed. The only one who benefits is the untrained finder. They definitely are " robbers " in the sense that they are robbing all humanity of its rich history when not properly documenting the finds.

Robbers sell treasures for personal gain. Archaeologists record for history and the treasures go to a museum for the public to enjoy.

I'm so torn. I'm all for discovering the past through exploration but.... Ehh. It's so difficult as I could care less if thousands of years later someone found something historically exciting in my grave. At least these are being learned from. But at the same time, your right, we don't have the same rules which...kinda sucks.

Once something like this is known if they(archaeologists) don't remove it then guards will have to be posted there 24/7 since there are people out there who would also like to remove(steal) it for their own purposes($$$) and wouldn't lose a nights sleep over it.

Without archeologists, historical events would be very hard to verify and it would mostly be "he said, she said". Did you form your option from watching Indiana Jones movies? Because those are parodies of archeologists. They don't go treasure hunting, they go information gathering.

i can see your argument, however, archaeologists have to record these finds and exactly where the relics are found and write reports on the dig. also in this country they are put in musiums, not alowed to be sold on the open market.

Glorified grave robbers

Arguably removing the artefacts now is not robbery as they will be correctly documented and made available for research, furthermore the argument would be due to the age of the artefacts and the people they belonged to, it makes the artefacts world heritage artefacts. Meaning they can shed light on human development in the past, which is responsible for shaping society today. Once the artefacts have been documented and appropriately researched there's nothing stopping them being redeposited. Also if the artefacts had been removed in antiquity they would surley have been sold privately and been poorly documented, making it likely that the artefacts wouldn't be in one collection and with all the pieces being intact.

This can open a lot of conversation! Another side is what about the things that are metal detected? Some “hordes” that are found? Jars of coins, precious metals that are buried? Should we leave them there after someone has buried them because they are gone from this time? Just saying Deep Digger Dan! Your not stealing, your preserving history for others to enjoy! This is something I absolutely agree with you. Funny how the archaeologists don't see the irony of what they do as compared to grave robbers. These were important loved ones in their community and they had every right to be left alone as they intended to be for eternity. I wonder what the archaeologists would say if someone went out and dug up their grand parents (in the name of science)?

I don't disagree with your stand on Robbery, however. Is it classed as Theft if they are dug up and sold on for personal gain. After all it wasn't their property in the first place. If they dig up a grave for examination and they find gold - of course they should put the gold in a museum and not put it back in the ground, graverobbing is taking it and selling it for profit, in my humble oppinion...

Dan, and what about all the gold the Spanish people did rob from the Inka and Maya that sunk in a ship? They claim it is theirs to the ones that found the stolen gold in the sunken ship. Should it not have been returned to the people that it was stolen from in the first place? I think if you cant bent the rules to that what fits your self the best you are just to honest.

I've always been on the fence re the ethics of cultural anthropology, i.e. what constitutes grave-robbing & what does not, what situations warrant return of items in museums, universities, & personal collections to the descendants, representative cultures, & modern-day countries from which these artifacts were discovered, removed, or stolen, & the criteria by which such claims should be weighed (& who should be in charge of judging said claims). Tomb-raiding, war-time sacking of museums & universities (whose own artifact claims are often dubious), & archeological digs, are just a few situations resulting in the destruction, hoarding, or sale of contents by/to various entities, each claiming valid rights of ownership. In a perfect world, discovered artifacts could be returned to descendants of the original owners/artisans/cultures involved, but most situations are much more complicated than that; plus, enter government bureaucracy over archeological sites in question, awa organizations sponsoring expeditions, & things become even murkier. If these powerful entities cannot agree upon rights of ownership in matters of such cultural/historical import, who will champion the poor citizen wielding a metal detector in his own backyard or on public property to his/her rights to keep what he/she finds eh? Finders/keepers ain't as simple as it once was, as rules go.

This is basically the same deal as the excavation of the Terracotta Army, except that the burial tomb was never unearthed. Since this has gotten much less press that that of the former find, i'm not surprised that the ethics of the Archeologists are less than trustworthy. It is a shame that the gold and jewelry is being made a priority find over other finds, like scripts, or documented information thart might tell how the common day was for a human living in that area. I personally believe that the crisies in the Midle East should be resolved before more damage is done towards the quest for knowledge of the past.

From the perspective of the folks who buried the treasure, there would be no difference between archeologists and common grave robbers. Our society considers the “robbery” to be justified by the noble pursuit of knowledge, but the tomb robbers of old no doubt considered their own theft to be justified as well.
