A brief addendum vid to further explain the fixing for the tensioner pulley/lower cover. This was on a 2.8 JTD engine but is essentially the same as the older 2.5 and the not so much older 2.8 IDTD engines. Sorry the camera work is a bit shaky but it was filmed using my phone because I forgot to take the camcorder to work.

Brilliant Dave, thanks so much for taking the time to make and post this video. Got confused about the stepped washers on my Boxer II 2.8 Hdi last time I did my cambelt change and could never get clarification of the right way round. Also, it used to worry me that the cambelt tensioner is only used when replacing the belt and not dynamically to compensate for stretching - but if that is how you say it is, its OK with me. Finally thanks for decoding the belt teeth, belt width numbers, I'll be checking mine next week when I change the belt again after 10 years:)

Great, it took me a lot to get this information... I'm assembling a 2.8 master and this part of the tensioner was disassembled, all the videos show the synchronization but not these details, thanks from Cordoba, Argentina

I'm about to do this job on a 2001 2.8HDi and that was fantastically useful info, esp the notch on the cam cover and the importance of checking/unseizing the tensioner arm (I had not thought of that). So THANK YOU for taking the time to do this video.

That's it Dave,that's exactly what I did wrong with the tensioner washer.thank you.also the tensioner and idle pulleys look like your 2.8.slightly smaller than the 2.5.it ran fine with that though.

The 2.5 usually has same sized idler and tensioner pulleys, I've only ever seen the 2.8 JTD lump to have the dissimilar sized pulleys. Glad you found it helpful bud and I hope you can get yours fixed and running properly after all this hassle .

Hi Dave ,I've got the second cambelt on new tensioner and tensioner carrier(upgraded model a s original carrier has superceded)and new idler.got it running.the cam belt walked abit causing about 1mm hanging over fuel pump.i reset the cambelt making sure cambelt was as far back as possible.ran it again but walked back to same position. Keeped it running with abit of revs.cambelt stayed in that position.It looks like that's where it wants to run.the fuel pump sits slightly back from all the other pulleys.But seems to run even with the rest.What do you reckon Dave?
@davesshed1488

Sounds ok to me, the crank pulley should stop it walking off completely. I'd say it's just found its own position. Just make sure you've got the washers the right way round this time. Happy motoring😀

Great info in the 2.5 I have a Renault 2.5 Sofim and my cam belt is 152 and pullys slightly bigger than other ,just to be sure does the larger one go on top and smaller at the tensioner,also how do you replace the barrel tensioner that's lodged in water pump housing I think maybe mine ain't working right cheers
@davesshed1488
@davesshed1488 Жыл бұрын
The bigger pulley is the idler at the top, smaller one is the tensioner. To replace the spring plunger, once you've removed the tensioner pulley you need to compress the spring with a lever to remove the keeper then you can pull it out, it may well be stuck in place with age so a good dose of WD 40 and twist it while tapping it should shift it.

I have just one more question related to the 2.8jtd I saw the plastic lower cover yesterday as it was taken off and it shows the same deformation as shown on your video. Mine has got air con as well does the bottom pulley that is bolted to the crank have a washer or spacer on the back of the pulley because when this was taken off there wasn't one that I could see. Cheers Paul

The bottom pulley does often have a thin washer behind it but not always, I haven't as yet managed to work out why some do and some don't.

@Dave's Shed Hi, thanks for replying. I am clutching at straws really, but it would keep the bottom pulley another 0.5mm away from the cam case and maybe better pulley alignment.

Hi, I've just done 1 of these in work and there was no inner stepped washer,the order of everything else was fine, would this be a problem?
@davesshed1488
@davesshed1488 Жыл бұрын
Potentially yes, the inner stepped washer helps to locate the timing belt cover and without it the cover may be too close to the belt and could rub on the belt.

Hi Dave The Motorhome was in the garage for 4.5 months before I got it back. They had to rebuild the head as valves were bent and also the camshaft. Have done about 200 miles in it and the same thing has happened today without any warning looks like cam-belt has come loose and done the same again so recovered back to the garage. I know it’s a long shot but have you any idea what would cause this? Thanks Paul
@davesshed1488

If they got the washers the wrong way round on the tensioner stud it might cause it but without seeing it first hand it's impossible to say.

Hi I had a cambelt replaced on my 2006 2.8jtd 400miles ago and on Friday I broke down on the Motorway as the alternator belt has been rubbing on the lower plastic housing which has worn a big part of it away and has shredded the belt which has found it’s way into the cambelt and wrapped around the bottom camshaft pulley. Looks like the belt has jumped. Could you give me any idea why this would have happened? Currently in a garage waiting repairs.
@davesshed1488

Without seeing the vehicle it's difficult to say accurately but from your description it sounds like the alternator belt was fitted wrongly.

@@davesshed1488 hi Thank you for taking time to reply I appreciate it. The air con belt was still intact. Do you think the belt was put on the pulley to far over or is there any other reason this belt could have crept across. This is on a Fiat ducato Rapido motorhome which I bought from a dealer but had no idea when the cambelt had been replaced so I thought I better get it done to stop any future problems then this happens. Of course the garage are not taking responsibility.

Hi Dave,me again.i have another question regarding the Ducato. What would likely be the problem,when I change down to 2and gear It scraunches. Is this most likely be the synchro or the clutch?.the clutch pedal is quite high compared to the brake pedal.you thoughts would be most appreciated. Also the 4th synchro was apparently done by a garage 2 years ago and the clutch according to the receipt.anx about 6000 miles.
@davesshed1488
@davesshed1488 3 жыл бұрын
hi Des, if all other gears select ok with no crunching then its most likely the 2nd gear synchro failing. Try double declutching on downshifts into 2nd, that should help.

@davesshed1488
@davesshed1488 3 жыл бұрын
@@tucka1234 it will last as long as it lasts, I'm sorry to say fiat gearboxes of this generation were made almost entirely by cadburys, synchro failure was quite common. As for the clutch pedal you can adjust that on the cable at gearbox end, just need to make sure the clutch clears fully.

Your Timing cover washer position is wrong. I did that and come very close to auxiliary belt.
@davesshed1488
@davesshed1488 3 ай бұрын
You are mistaken my friend, the way I describe it is the correct way to fit the washers on the tensioner pulley. If your cover is too close to the aux belt then either the cover is distorted from being fitted wrongly or there is an issue with your aux belt.
