2 Best Ways To Rig Mud Minnows (For Redfish, Trout & Flounder)

Mud minnows make great baits for trout, redfish, and flounder.
They’re hardy, easy to find in bait stores, and easy to find and cast net in the shallows
They’re popular baits, but as far as rigging them goes, most people are missing out on a big opportunity…
Mud minnows naturally swim on the bottom, so fishing them on something like a Carolina rig allows them to settle down and be comfortable…
But if you fish them under a bobber or cork and they can’t reach the bottom, they’ll make a lot of flash and commotion trying to swim down, which will attract more predator fish.
In the video below, we’ve got Capt. Jud Brock of Eastern Angling showing us his two favorite float rigs for mud minnows. Capt. Jud Brock (@judbrockfishing) is an experienced guide out of North Carolina and is also the host of the Eastern Current Fishing Podcast.
Since using these rigs, he’s caught way more fish on live bait than he did when he used to fish them on the bottom.

Been using this method for years on bluegill and crappie. So easy to adjust your depth. Never considered it for inshore.

Keep alive for a very long time my man is last longer than shiners hate to say I rather use a mud meadow or some fresh live shad or a live crab or live worms but madness is number one for what I need it for they love my mud Meadows

Bobber stop is just a uni knot with both tag ends cut, get some coffee straws and tie a bunch

Slip cork rig are a staple in my area in southeast ga/ northeast fl. I use it a bunch and I’ve made a few videos on it myself

Shrimp usually just the better option in my opinion

They are great but their are several problems with live shrimp. First, in most locations live shrimp must be bought. Bull and mud minnows are free. Bull and mud minnows are extremely hardy in a livewell and on a hook in comparison with shrimp, but probably the biggest drawback is that little peckers like pinfish annihilate shrimp but leave the minnows alone.

Today, the reason I came to this video, I fished Fernandina FL eagans creek, I used live shrimp on the bottom, had two bites in one hour, no fish. The man next to me was fishing mud minnows on a sliding barrel sinker with no stoppers! just a hook and the sliding sinker attatched to his main line. he caught 5 reds and four were keepers, and two trout. he also missed quite a few big bites, I saw this. I was like damn, mud minnows worked today.
