2 Decades Behind Bars for Wrongful Murder Conviction: The Fairbanks Four

In 1997, a teenager was found beaten to death in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska. Police quickly pinned the murder on four native teens from a local high school and convicted them on false confessions, an unreliable witness, and forged evidence. Still, the "Fairbanks Four" continued to maintain their innocence.
Over time, the fight for their freedom grew into a statewide movement against Alaska’s judicial system. After 18 years, the Fairbanks Four were set free-but the state still refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, the wrongfully convicted men, who were thrown in prison as teenagers, are struggling to get used to life outside after nearly two decades behind bars.
VICE trekked to Alaska to meet two members of the Fairbanks Four, the community members who rallied behind them, and the investigators who helped secure their freedom-exploring the enduring impact of their wrongful incarceration and the native community’s effort to move forward.

The case against them was not all that circumstantial actually. The state had all they needed to put them away, easily! The Natives just got a lucky break that some other guy, in for life, admitted to the crime. And FYI: LIFERS WILL ADMIT TO YOUR CRIME so long as you see to their maintenance. (Cash for the store. IE:Candy.) or in this alleged deal, it would be paid threw a 3rd party 'friend' indirectly. That person being the first guy to come forward, pushing his buddy confess. (If this is true, that guy would be receiving cash payouts for both inmates, which looks like gratitude, for coming forward with the {so called} truth.) I'm not saying thats whats happening in this case, this is just speculation on my part. But all other evidence of their innocents 'as stated in this video at least', is purely emotional, and based on blind faith. Which their own lead activist even admits to at T-19:15. But really, this video is crap, it could have shown the HARD evidence rather than the tears... but fails to.

For a travesty like this to happen is a concerted operation with numerous operatives involved. There should be a dozen people from every level of the prosecution and justice team incarcerated for years over this; aside from the compensation due. I can't even imagine what kind of compensation can be provided to someone imprisoned for 18 years. A billion dollars wouldn't come close to making up two decades of a person's life viciously stolen, and the systematic psychological torture and dehumanization constantly applied in the standard USA prisons.

If so that's fucked up and I would find a really great high profile attorney, the four of them, and sue together arguing that they were extorted on top of being held captive unjustly for the past 18 years. All that and the gov wants to strongarm them into being quiet just so they can get out of a place they enver should have been in the first place?

Wrongful convictions lead to a lot of real criminals going unpunished. In many cases, the state takes too long to rectify its mistake and the statute of limitations runs out, so the real criminal gets away with it. This happened with the Todd Neely case (FL) and the Shephard and Lester case (NJ). Or the state just won't admit its mistake despite exoneration, so they won't investigate or prosecute someone else.

MrViking you are fucking delusional... go sit in prison for 18 years and have freedom dangled in front of your face to sign something.. your pride isn’t even near as close as the will to be free from that nightmare. You’d sign it gurantee... the same thing goes for why people take plea bargains and end up taking charges that ultimately they didn’t do, is because they are threatened with a absurd amount of trouble and it’s convincing when your locked in there being told over and over again they have ore than enough to put you away etc etc and knowing that you e seen time and tie again whether it be in real life or on tv, that being innocent isn’t always enough. Especially if you can’t prove that innocence because you weren’t planning on a situation suddenly happening one night Ike this. To say that bull shit that innocent people don’t sign things, just is another example of the types of people who put these kids away for a third of their lives.. and continued to dangle freedom over knowingly innocent kids heads if they didn’t sign to get sued so that they wouldn’t have to be accountable and repay those kids for that third of their lives they so swiftly took away without hesitation or even the thought to cross examine other scenarios and situations right out of the gate...

MrViking so your saying that you would choose to sit in prison knowing your innocent. You would choose to sit in prison until you die, just out of pride..

@@ariellaedwards8204 It's not completely wrong. I looked the case up and it's not a Brad Harris, but a Daniel Harris, who is in prison. I couldn't find much information other than he had an alibi and it was someone in jail who proposed him as a suspect, saying that Daniel's brother, Brad, raped the girl and then Daniel cut her throat with a knife. However, 3 witnesses confirmed his alibi. A friend of the girl's boyfriend at the time said that he [the boyfriend] left a party that night and then came back covered in blood... So yeah, Daniel's probably wrongfully convicted. It was just a quick google search tho, it'd be great if there was more information about the case.

I went to jail when I was the victim of a crime. A woman tried to stab me, and I disarmed her. The police came, and she lied to them. She made up a terrible story, and tried to ruin my life because I was packing to leave her. I got so angry that I was getting arrested, so I made it worse resisting. She admitted to lying, but the state still pressed charges. They knew I was innocent, and did not care. I was military police with no record. That is what saved me. She was a criminal. In the end, it turned out ok. I had to take a class for women beaters who I can't stand, and attend with severe disabilty. I had to pay for this class, and it was a lot for a disabled person. I was lucky to even get bail. They said I was a danger. They put me on house arrest. I met other guys who had women lie about them too in there. Women complain about sexism, but men go through it worse with police. I had to take a deal, and admit to touching her without permission. I was wrestiling a knife from her, and had to admit to a crime. It was better then all those felonies. Now I can never purchase w weapon to hunt, or protect myself because one person lied against me. I am happy, because it got me away from her for good. It also changed my life. I got close to God during this time, and got real joy.

As a victim of rape on multiple occassions and domestic violence, and having seen it with my sister.... I don't think this is a gender issue. It can seem that way. I was so angry for so long, but also scared, thinking that the world was against me. The last guy who did something to me I took justice into my own hands because I knew how it would turn out. I looked at the limitations of the law, especially here, and I went with it. I had no proof of rape, and so published on posters conversations that we had on DM that I could prove, I put his workplace, not his real address but next door, his photo.... and then I posted them all around his work and home. I got away with it. That is my advice to you. Be smart. The world ISN'T FAIR.... it is a war with dirty tatics- you don't have to go out of your way to hurt others, but you do have to look after yourself, tooth and nail. And this goes for men and women.... be really careful about who you share a bed with.

I think this story shows how some police officers or detectives are pushed into solving a case so it doesnt matter who they find guilty weather right or wrong they just want it solved instead of the truth. I know however some officers and detectives are honest people and do consider reason.

The people who should be locked up for life are the ones who get out just to do it over again. The ones who don't belong are kept there. It's crazy to me. These police are so egar to get a convtion they don't care who they lock up. Imgaine if it were their own child?

What a sad shame. His family must have so SO SO SO SO MUCH ANGERRRRRRRRRR😡😡😡 I know I would. They deserve some compensation for his tragic situation. I mean come on folks, you literally killed this poor man. Drove him insane to the point of taking his own life because he didn’t want to live with the DAILY pain you forced upon him. I just can’t even begin to imagine what he was feeling. Every second of every minute all fucking day long, FOREVER without an end in sight 😔. Wow! Holy Hell.

The judges decision for the Fairbanks Four to leave asap on the contingency they can't sue the state or police department for wrong doing and tempering with evidence to find answers to who killed this young white kid.
