I love that John Williams, in giving the main theme to the (French) Horns, also wrote them a (rapidly) ascending chromatic scale run as part of that theme-it's something only valved Horns can do, and something that could not have been written/heard in classical or other music before Horns got their full valve systems.

Yeh it is cool that he opted for French horns, followed by trumpets and flutes, with trombones carrying the counter-melody.

Just for the record, BOTH themes were written and conducted by John Williams.... Same John Williams who wrote and conducted the most famous Sci-Fi soundtracks of all time, from Jaws and Star Wars and Close Encounters to Superman and Indiana Jones soundtracks.

Of course you love it. Look at the credits. The composer was a young John "Johnny" Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List). One of the most prolific and popular composers to score TV shows and movies. TRIVIA: The robot's official title - Class M-3, Model B-9/General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot.

Taking them both at face value: the two versions are exquisitely subtley different rhythmically. The first syncopates the horn section with the orchestra. The second doesn't do that! It demotes several bars to 7/8, syncopating the whole orchestra. Extremely subtle to my ears!

Love the first theme, brings back memories of my cousin playing video games to it.
@themoichannel60098 жыл бұрын
the seemingly divergent tempi of the flutes and bells was fully intentional for reasons known only to john Williams. but that has to be the jazziest thing he ever composed, hands down.

Most of his work was pretty jazzy in the 60's, when he was composing under the name Johnny Williams. That was just the music of the time.

John Williams composed both versions. But in my opinion the season one version is much much better. Unfortunately it was the 1960s and the season 3 change reflected that.

When I saw the title of this video, I assumed it would include the theme from Seasons 1 and 2 as well as this Season 3 (and beyond) version. Maybe the title should specify that. Both were written by (as then listed) Johnny T. Williams

Everyone's talking about the similarity between this and the Jurassic Park theme, but I'm over here saying the Asteroid Field music from Empire Strikes Back is so similar that Williams had to have intentionally composed it from a variation of the Lost in Space theme.

I think what most people think is a French horn is actually a melophonium . It gives the same sound as a French horn but is much easier to play ...The French horn is very difficult to play and limited as to what it can do .

There are two different Lost In Space themes, but this is two versions of the second theme. This doesn't include the orignal theme. The 2nd version on this video is terrible.

That second version... See, on the one hand, I was never able to master the musical instrument of my choice, so I'm no musician and am somewhat loathe to criticize where I can do no better. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with my ears- at least there wasn't until I heard that affront to my hearing. I feel like someone just raped my ears.

That second one isn't very good. It doesn't sound like it was actually in the show - maybe it's from one of those albums where they couldn't afford the rights to include the actual TV themes, so they had them recreated [often poorly].
@ewaf8810 жыл бұрын
Yes a bit like the dreadful 'Top of The Pops' cover albums from the 1970's here in the UK. a cover version of Lee Marvin's 'I was born under a wandrin star' had to be heard to be believed. You're right about version 2 - it's actually out of tune as well. Actually version one seems to have had some additional accompanying keyboards added.

'Travesty?' That's kind of harsh. I grew up watching this show (Dr. Smith, Jonathan Harris talked my dad into hair transplants in a limo ride - I thought being in the car with him was the COOLEST). While I don't hate the 1st theme, I always liked the 2nd theme better. It was faster. As far as the 2nd version here, it's pretty damn close to it's actual arrangement, and, as the theme has no lyrics, and was played almost verbatim, I don't get the grip about it.

What the hell is this mash-up? The first version of the theme begins normally but then midway transitions to the rancid electronic version from "Television's Greatest Hits."
