The Grande Tour Episode 2.
Day 1, Part 2: Sunday July 9th 2023
Driving from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ely, Nevada.
- I stop off at the Salt Flats Rest Area to experience the Bonneville Salt Flats (and have a taste!)
- Then onward vie West Wendover to Cherry Creek, where some of the old train station remains, (5 miles from Route 93!)
- Then on to Ely, where I check in to the very quirky Prospector Hotel.
- Then out to see the mural in memory of Dirt the Cat.
- Then I walk around the Ely depot, taking in the peaceful evening atmosphere.

My wife and I drove those same roads, from Salt Lake City to Ely, just last month. Stopped at the Bonneville rest area, but didn't have a taste. We spent 5. days in town wandering the yard, etc. Also did the "Be the Engineer" experience, driving #105 and # 81. Took a ton of pictures and had lots of fun.

Haha! Oh you missed out on tasting. Best salt around! Brilliant, so nice to spend a bit more time there, and having an engineer experience too. I did so much on my trip, but it was rushed. I could have done with double the time and done nothing more, just had time to take in each town. Thank you.

Awesome. I liked the remains of the water tank. Obviously Dirt was well loved. It’s funny how a simple creature can capture the heart, mind, and spirit of a place.

Yeah Cherry Creek was a nice little visit! Yep, Dirt had a big impact. Apparently at first, the workshop guys were annoyed as they'd be there for visitors, ready and proud to show off their work on the locomotives but people would ask "Where's the cat?" 😹. But soon, everyone loved him. Thank you Terry!

Hi Simon, the drive takes you through a somewhat unspectacular landscape. There hasn't been a train on this railway line for a long time. An interesting hotel with a gaming casino, with great facilities. A great picture the cat and the steam locomotive. The deer at the train station is great. Great video, I hope there are more videos to come. Best regards Wolfgang

The first rule of Utah is bring an extra layer. A 40+ degrees difference between high and low temperatures is common. The second rule is carry extra drinking water. When you get out of your car in a remote place, like to look at the frame of an old water tower, stomp around a bit; the rattlers feel the vibrations and hopefully move away from you. I've never been to Ely and it is practically next door by our standards. Hopefully I'll garner some motivation from your videos.

Yep, I was pretty well prepared on my travels. My passenger seat was always loaded with drinks and snacks. I was wary of anything waiting in the grasses. Ely is nice to visit if you can. There's a lot of history there!

Finally!!!! Pleased to know all is A-OK. Navigating for you on the driver's left side of car for you is like navigating for me on the rt. side in the UK. But, no round abouts for you which is fortunate to aid in less problems! Eager to see trains in that part, which I have not visited. I prefer the more civilized - Durango, Silverton, Chama, Antonito. Well, maybe not Antonito! Cheers, Dr. Ric, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA

How much storyboarding did you do beforehand along with all the other research and holiday planning as it must have been a lot to make this so professional looking. Judith Chalmers eat your heart out. I didn’t realise the romans built so many roads in America…
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 11 ай бұрын
I think "Judith Chalmers eat your heart out" is my favourite compliment now 🤣 Umm, any storyboarding was in my head really. I had my itinerary with brief notes of things I wanted to see. I was pretty sure where each chapter would end and the next begin. Then when I was going somewhere I'd explain that, once there I'd say something and get a veriety of shots/views, usually inspired by just being there. My dashboard GoPro, just slap that on for half a minute or so each time the scenery changed or something interesting came up. Any additional info, I'm adding by commentary at time of editing. Thank you!

You have great taste, trains and Pink Floyd. This railway is on my bucket list. Also can you get direct flights from London to Salt Lake City?
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 11 ай бұрын
Thank you 😉. It wasn't planned, but I thought the shirt suited the surreal landscape of the salt flats! Ely is a really nice visit, I departed from my Rio Grande theme to see it. There aren't direct flights to Salt Lake, sadly. I briefly say in Episode 1 that I go via Chicago (with a 6 hour wait between flights!). My other option on that day was via San Fransisco. Back in 2016 I did a trip with a couple of mates and we finished in Salt Lake, flying home via Dallas.
