Love the M9! I even carry it around my night-time job. Also turns into a conversation piece when people ask me things like, "Hey what's that in your pocket?" and "Oh it's a video light. You do video?"

Paused at 4:35 - That is a very beautifully lit scene. With the video paused with the subject looking off to the left is a very powerful image. I can imagine that character in a film, and that picture truly is worth a thousand words. Very well-lit.

Hi thanks for the nice review of both the lights. I have a question.... As the Aputure Al Mx is good for the outdoors, is this light good for the indoors/ studio/ room recording as well? Does these lights give a harsh effect on eyes when indoors? Or its soft, coz I guess Mx cant be used with the softbox that makes the light to spread and makes the light softer. So using the MX without the soft box makes the light effects and recording quality better along with softer on eyes?

Great video. Was looking at getting these lights. The mx may have better build quality and colour adjustable, but I don't think it's worth the 3 - 4 times the price of the m9. Like you said, you can change the colour temp using gels. I'll keep my $150 :) m9 here I come

Looks like a great tool, if you need something cheaper, the gigalumi 228 LED is bi-color and brighter than both, they don’t have built in batteries, but grab s couple of sony npf batteries and your ready to go.

I was curious about using these to shoot food. I have the M9 but really like how the MX can switch colors internally without a gel. I'm doing documentary work about a local chef, but his kitchen is too small and narrow to fit any large lights in.

How do these lights compare to LitraTorch lights...? The LitraTorch lights are much smaller than these and can produce up to 800 lumen continuous at the highest setting and 2200 lumen for the strobe setting (obviously not useful for photo or video work but excellent for a bike light). The downside of the LitraTorch is only 3 intensity settings and short battery life at 800 lumen (about 35 mins) but 4 hrs at 100 lumen which is the lowest setting. Either way...since I do travel a lot...having quality choices like the Aputure and LitraTorch in such a compact form factor is awesome!
