Guitarists learn a finger shape for every chord. In this lesson I show how fiddle players can do the same thing, using two-note finger patterns. The easiest pair of notes to find has the root on the top, and the third below, on the next string down. Using this finger pattern it is very easy to change from major to minor, by lowering the lower note by a semitone. I also show how to find adjacent patterns for the I,IV and V chords.
These techniques are useful for fiddlers in a variety of contexts; accompaniment with off- beat chops; long notes in country music; shuffles in bluegrass or old time, backing in Gypsy music, or rock accompaniment.
Below are details of further fiddle resources from Chris Haigh

This video contains some essential skills for playing with a guitar based group vs a classical group. The ability to play easy chords and change between the I IV V is a necessary first step for those who want to move away from relying on written notes. This is a super lesson Chris. Thank you!

Hi Nick. Glad you found it useful. For guitar and mandolin there are endless books of chord shapes, but few fiddle players take accompaniment seriously, so I think there's a real shortage of ides and information in this field!

Very useful and informative, Chris, and you picked the easiest shapes to begin with. I was thinking it might also be good to show a simple scale using those same major 6ths and minor 6ths, eg a C scale starting on the 2 middle strings, so EC, FD, GE, AF etc, and it's all in 1st position, apart from the last 2 notes. Just an idea. I'm sure it's in one or more of your books!
@TheFiddleChannel
@TheFiddleChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Yes, this concept ties in closely with what I call the scale of sixths, which I think is what you are describing. I had a video on that a couple of weeks ago.

good, I can pick a chord on the violin with just one finger on the G strings and we pick up C and G with the 3rd finger and on the E and A strings we pick up the C and G notes with the 2nd finger, is that okay?

Just got my grandpas fiddle I play mandolin and this thing is flipping horrible sounding. Well I am. It feels like I can only use one string at time. I sound like a screech owl with torn screech.. I'm stubborn as a fat lady with her last piece of cake. I will be fiddling soon as I figure out everything. Thanks for lesson. I need it .....
@TheFiddleChannel
@TheFiddleChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi Pablo. If it's screeching, it's probably because of the bow, not the fiddle. Bowing looks easy but it's actually a real challenge to get a smooth pressure. Also make sure you have the proper tension on the bow (not too tight, not too loose), and that you have plenty of rosin on the bow.
@pablo6305
