The real population of a city is it’s metropolitan area (arguably). A city defined in by its governmental provision is just the area controlled by a single city authority. So, Miami technically would only have about 400,000 people but it’s metropolitan area is about 7 million which is more accurate. Jakarta city has 10 million people but it’s metropolitan area is 32 million placed second in the world behind Tokyo.

For whatever reason population data tends to only list Jakarta City Proper's population of 11 million people which is far smaller than Tokyo's seemingly 37 million people, i think it's because of the way Indonesian government statistics work. A much more ignored data is the Metro data (Population of Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek-Punjur in Indonesian) which shows that the metro area of Jakarta has *33-35 million* people, more populated than the entirety of Malaysia and the second most populated only after the afformentioned Tokyo, now comparable since Tokyo's 37 million people data is its *Metro* population
