Fun fact about the Sea of Japan: Both the northernmost tropical coral reef (off of Tsushima island) and the lowest latitude port that freezes over (Vladivostok) both exist within it. Additionally, this makes it so that Russia is closer to a coral reef than it is to France.

@@PAINNN666 I made a comment about all the peninsulas that go north too. There's a lot, its just that some of them aren't quite as obviously peninsula shaped (due to sheer luck) and they're easy to miss because the map orientation makes it easy to see ones pointing down. Cape York and the Antarctic peninsula are probably the most obvious north pointing peninsulas.

You are actually right about that island being artificial. It was created with the building of the Daniel Johnson dam shown at 1:50. The lake didn't exist before the dam was built. It is the largest man made island in the world.

Never mind, I see now that Rene Levasseur island is actually about twice as big as Flevopolder (which was technically also built with help of a dam). It doesn't appear on the wiki list of artificial islands though. Someone might need to update that.

If you turn the map upside down you'll probably notice the north facing ones more easily.

for the penninsula thing, I wonder if the rotation of the earth directs the plate tectonics, and landmasses end up being "smushed" north/south and it's just a coincidence (luck of the draw) that a lot end up pointing south. but vertical is preferred

The modern continents have all drifted north compared to when they were all connected, except for maybe a few that stayed more still (Africa). The peninsulas follow behind. Seems like a pretty good guess to me. I feel like you can see the movement of landmasses quite clearly on maps. How the islands between Australia and Asia move south but then get twisted east and even a bit north because of Australia pushing them up, moving in a somewhat northeast direction itself.

The motto for the State of Michigan is the Latin phrase; “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice,” meaning; “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” The state is comprised of two large peninsulas, with each having a few smaller peninsulas sticking out. Most of the peninsulas in Michigan face north.

The Aral sea was once the 4th largest lake in the world but it no longer stands that position because of the dams that where used to water the rice crops in Uzbekistan

Slight correction, it was actually due to cotton farming as cotton is the most water-intensive crop. Kazakhstan actually built a dam to help replenish the North Aral Sea, which has recovered quite a bit over the years, but (afaik) nothing is really being done on Uzbekistan's part to help the South Aral Sea, despite numerous plans being put forward over the years.

I think it makes sense to talk about either 4 or 9 continents, depending on how much you want to differentiate between parts of America (North and South) and Afroeurasia (Africa, Arabia, India, Europa and Asia). Antarctica and Australia are more obviously 1 continent each, the other two super continents have different subcontinents.

@@norml.hugh-mann That’s why I said 1 continent EACH. And Antarctica is mostly divide because the ice is pushing the rock below down under the sea level. Would the ice (wich is a kind of rock too in a way) melt the continent would rise back above sea level and reconnect.

The reason peninsulas droop down/south seems to me as an avid amateur know-it-all, like a "likely guess" would be - because over the last, oh ya know, several million years most of the continental plates have drifted north, making some of the landmass trail behind. Also works for Labrador trailing east behind NA which has been moving westward for a long time. P.S. And the break-up of the southernmost continents/landmasses have been more wild/extreme/chaotic than that of the northern parts. North also being where most of the landmass is. Makes it somewhat more stable I'd guess. Though could just be chance as well. I don't just count the "simple" definition of peninsulas here either. Africa and South America are shaped like drooping down peninsulas quite obviously.

1:15 I've been seeing so much talk about this recently, and I was there this summer on a research project. The lake actually is partially artificial, it is the headpond for a (very large) dam down stream. It's called the eye of quebec because of its shape and how much power it produces. There is a lodge at the lake you can only stay at if you're a research worker or construction worker.

In 2006 I got to visit Antarctica and we did an excursion to Deception Island. It's actually a volcano, so everyone joined the Antarctic swim team by diving into the water, and then laying in a natrual hot spring dug down in the mud/sand of the beach a few feet. I've still got my plaque somewhere!

The Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec, which you highlight is not *just* an island in a (dammed, and thus the crater discovered) lake - there's a lake on that island, and it has islands of its own.

For the Sicily bridge, I live in Reggio Calabria, the city in Calabria that should be connected to the other side and they haven't built it for so long because it was found that Sicily gets away a few millimeters every year from the main body of Italy and because I think they didn't have enough funds for a lot of time. Anyways now they wanna build it but it's not going to connect the cities where the naval ports are and it's going to be on a smaller city further away and at this point a lot of people think that going with the boats is better (9:07)

Regarding the bridge, Croatia did it(the nontroversial pelješac bridge) to link up their southern parts, can't see a reason(other than monetary/sea depth) Italy couldn't link theirs.

Monetary/sea depth is the exact reason why it wasn’t built yet. The strait is more than 200m deep. No bridge supports can be built this deep so the bridge will need to have the span more than 1km longer than the current longest bridge in the world.

1:15 ok so thats lake manicouagan, geology hub made a good video about it, and theres a good report of an expedition to the site, it is formed from a meteor, a long time ago a dam was built which filled it fully with water, making the circular shape extremely noticeable, theres lots of good photos of it from space to, its an awesome lake

Lake Manicouagan in Quebec was formed 250 million years ago by the impact of an estimated 5 km asteroid. The impact was so large the cracks from the bottom of the crater penetrated to the upper mantle leading to a massive upwelling of magma. When formed it was probably much larger and more spectacular but this is some of the world's oldest exposed surface so it has been heavily eroded.

The floor of the Caspian Sea is resembles the ocean floor more than continental crust and it’s water is very salty. This is because to that area of Asia was under a sallow sea that eventually dried up as the continental crust rose. This is why it’s considered a sea and not a lake, despite being land locked.

No Drew, continental USA, also included Alaska. The map you’re looking at is showing the highest and lowest points in the contiguous US states. If it was showing the highest and lowest points in the continental USA, the highest point would be Mount Denali, in Alaska. Coincidentally, the highest and lowest points in the continental USA, are also the highest and lowest points in North America.

I view a Peninsula as: A piece of continuing land being followed by water on parallel sides and then ends at a certain point or a piece of land that continues as a triangle or a piece of land that is connected to another with a thin piece connecting it to the other. So technically speaking with what I count as a Peninsula there are 47 Peninsulas....

I tend to subscribe to the 4 continents interpretation since it's the only one that doesn't require much arguing to explain. Also, did you just refer to the entirety of Patagonia as a peninsula? That's kinda pushing the concept to its breaking point.
