Today I did a sort of experiment with paints on two different canvases. I discuss my thoughts at the end of the video!
All of my colors are mixed the same:
1 part paint
2-3 parts floetrol
Drizzle of luquitex pouring
Water
My base coat is mixed:
1 part paint
1 part DecoArts satin enamel pure white
2-3 parts floetrol
Drizzle of luquitex pouring
Water to thin
While revisiting the Pearl pours again it’s really important to get the right consistency!

Monochromatic must be on the brain! I just did a monochromatic one and then did a bunch of color glazes over the dried pour. I always enjoy your work 😊

Both pours are spectacular...there's something about the shadowing on that first one though that is drawing me to it...super cool and so unique...you're so darn good at these Dwight, so good! ☺

I was so happy I forgot to say that I loved the painting. The composition was excellent. So clean and pleasing to the eye. Everything the simplicity and the pearl cell definition wow. I don't think I would ever tire of looking a either of the two. To me they each had individual wonder to offer. Thank you

Hi, Dwight. I've just discovered you today, your work is amazing and stunning. Well done. I'm from Australia and I use Australian floetrol my question is. Do I need to put more floetrol and less water? Australian floetrol is thinner than American. Thank you very much!!

I don’t think it matters…it’s about the consistency, so if your floetrol is thinner you won’t need as much water to get the paints to the “right” consistency! Glad you found me!!

Also, if I want to do a black Pearl pour and put my colors down first then the black base coat on top for pearls to come through should the colors then be thinner and the base coat be thicker? Sorry for all of the questions!

I’m not sure what your are exactly asking. You can do pearl pours with any color satin enamel. It doesn’t have to be white. And you’ll get the pearls as well. These pours you need to have all the paint you are using the same consistency. Have fun!

Thank you for reviewing your process with us. Two questions, is your base thinner than your colors and do you weigh you paint or mix by fluid volume? Thanks so much.

Thank you! My base and colors are the same consistency…I don’t weigh my paints, I use my cups to approximate how much paint I need…I have 24 oz, 8 and 4 oz cups. I use a chart to determine how much paint I need to flood the canvas. Measuring is cumbersome as you have to always account for more paint as you are tilting paint off. If you are just accounting for how much you need to cover the canvas then most likely you will over stretch things…i always have more paint than I need to account for tilting edges and corners!

I don’t think you need to use GAC I rarely use it…maybe only if my paints are thick to keep from cracking

Consistency is everything I think. For this pearl pour with the DecoArt enamel. Are your colors thinner than your base paint? Or the reverse? Is the Thinner one like half n half? Does it leave a mound? Or flow right in?

Do you use enamel in your dump and swirl? If not, how do you get your pearls?

This pour uses satin enamel paint, however a true dump and swirl doesn’t use satin enamels, you don’t need that to create cells…paint and floetrol thinned will do the job

I had tried using your recipe today but all four paintings are not even any close to yours with a lot of pearls. Not sure why all four failed. I notice you don’t even tilt your canvas so much to get rid of extra paint but your results are a gazillion pearls. Maybe, I shouldn’t tilt so much.

I don’t know what to say! It takes some practice and patience….I’m hopeful my formulas will work…try thinning or thickening….keep the faith!

I tried for pearl pour again this morning but so sad no luck. So just to feel better, I tried thickening the paints & wella! I’m “over the clouds”! I love the look of my clouds!!!! I’ll still try pearl pours but I need to take a break until my disappointment goes away 😂

Would it be possible to use GAC 800 instead of Liquitex pouring medium?

They are both pouring mediums, it I’m not sure how gac would work in a dump and swirl…in the pearl pours people use it, but I don’t…it’s too expensive and I’m not sure of it’s benefits in my pours.
