This is the third part of a 6 part series on reducing the trigger pull weight of a CZ Shadow 2 and action smoothing through polishing specific trigger components. Stay tuned for upcoming videos.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The polishing papers from coarsest to finest are:
Coarse: GREEN 30 Micron
GRAY 15 Micron
LIGHT BLUE: 9 Micron
PINK: 3 Micron
AQUA: 2 Micron
Finest: White: 1 Micron
#CZLIFE
By the time you finish with the Pink (3 Micron) you’ll already have a mirror finish.

Quick tip for removing the slide at 3:45. If you leave the hammer at half cock instead of fully cocking it, the position at which the slide touches the half cocked hammer happens to be the same position for lining up the marks to remove the slide stop. That way, you have a bit of resistance and it's easier to line those marks up. Hope that makes sense.

Excellent video. Great for CZ dummies. After attaining 65 years without owning a CZ 75, I bought a 75 B Omega about 6 months ago and was so amazed by its accuracy and feel in hand, now I am smitten. Just purchased a Shadow2 and cant wait to get to shooting it. It came with an excellent trigger from factory so cant wait to break it in good. The 75 B is as accurate as any of my high end 1911's....so I really have high hopes for the Shadow. Great lighting, camera work, and detailed explanations, especially for someone like me that although old, am a virtual CZ newbie. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!

David Payne Thank you so much for the great feedback! The stock trigger on the S2 is already good right out of the box, changing out the springs and a little polishing makes it incredible. The stock trigger is a little on the heavy side for my liking or preference. I’m glad you’re enjoying your CZ’s! I love them all, the ergonomics on them for me are the best. I’ll try shooting some other brand gun that someone else owns and all I want is the CZ back. :P

This is my new channel that has better camera footage and instructions. kzfaq.info/love/HpWVOmxLq1mh4Wt7ymo-vg Thank you again! The gun is very easy to work on, disassemble and reassemble. I no longer keep all the parts separate as I take it apart, they all go into a magnetic tray, but keeping the parts organized is helpful for someone just starting out. Take the gun apart a few times and you no longer need to keep your parts separated and organized either! LOL! Thank you again.

To be continued ...

Thank you for your excellent tutorial. I am a revolver guy trying to learn about the inner workings of my future Shadow 1. I like your systematic approach using the parts schematic and the labelled parts bins, and the use of correct terminology. Many "professional" gunsmiths on YT do far worse. Maybe your videos can help to attract my wifes attention to the sport and the technology - she uses to complain when I watch too much of gunblue490's videos. ;) Greetings from Germany

@Hans S. Grüße von Kanada! Thank you! I think that is one of my original gunsmithing videos, if I was using the labelled parts bin when I first started out. Now, after having had both of my guns, as well as several other people’s guns apart I don’t use a labeled parts bin anymore, lol. Everything goes into a magnetic parts holder and I sort it out as I put the gun back together. It is a very easy gun (I think) to work on. I used to watch gunblue490 as well, he has some good common sense information and as we progress with gunsmithing, I think we tend to forget about good old common sense. I do hope that you get your wife involved in the shooting sports! We need more women competing, I am one of only two women in our area (a region the size of 1/3 of Germany (NW BC) that shoots competitvely in handgun divisions. We need more women! MY apologies about the audio, I was recording it with my iPhone which was in a Lifeproof case which means it distorts the audio. I am waiting to get a newer iPhone and then I won’t use a case for it, so the video sound will hopefully improve. What revolver are you shooting? You mentioned getting a Shadow 1? Why not get the Shadow 2? And if you get a Shadow 2, consider getting an optic ready Shadow 2. The reason for this is that the optic ready Shadow 2 can be used with iron sights, or you can put an optic on it. I have aging eyes so I need corrective lens for close up, but I also need corrective lenses for distance; bifocals are terrible for shooting, most people never get used to them, plus I am cross eye dominant; so the optic on the OR Shadow 2 takes care of all those problems for me. I hope you’ll give that consideration in your purchase, you will not be disappointed in the Optic Ready Shadow 2!
@hanss9431

@@CZFanGrrl Dear FanGrrl, of course you get rid of the parts bin when you get proficient, but you got proficient by this approach. I don' t think my wife will ever compete, but who knows. I would be happy if she would shoot more frequently for now. Maybe she will like the pistol more than my revolvers. I have ordered the Kadet .22 adapter as well I have a few, all Smith&Wesson, two 4" .22 and .38 K-frames model 18 & 15, a 6" .357 L-Frame model 586, a 6" .44 N-Frame model 29, and will request a permit for another 3" .38 J-frame model 36. And a cap and ball revolver, Colt this time. I do not participate in IPSC, but compete in more formal divisions which - at least I believe - are mostly derived from classic police disciplines (like PPC, others are Police Pistol 1-4 and NPA Service Pistol). I chose the Shadow 1 over the Shadow 2 for it' s less aggressive look, and because it is listed in the service pistol list of my shooting association, while the more IPSC-like Shadow 2 is not. As I understand, technically/internally the Shadow 1 and Shadow 2 should not be much different. And, frankly speaking, I do not like the looks of the modern IPSC guns and their very aggressive checkering very much and prefer the classic service pistols, but chose the Shadow over a CZ 75 BD Police version for the lack of the firing pin block, which should - at least I think so - facilitate future trigger improvements. I like S&W (all steel) pistols and shoot them better than others, but I am not sure if I can get spare parts in the future for these out of production firearms. I have far more confidence in the CZUB approach to sell spare parts, and the CZ 75 with her HiPower-like estetics is one of the most beautiful pistols ever made, at least for me. I think can get along with the Shadow 1's modern accents like the rail and beaver tail and square dust cover. As the firearms regulation here is very complex and very restrictive, I think this will be my only semiautomatic pistol, and I think it should be a good choice, as it can do well covering most of my sporting use (at least I hope so), including an eventual beginner's IPSC use if I should ever have the occasion to try it. But most probably I would choose one of my revolvers then - I am much more confident using them, I like them better than semiautomatics, and I prefer the 38/357 cartridge over the 9mm all day long, reloading included. As far as optics go, only the Shadow 2 is available in an OR version, and it comes with a hefty charge over the basic model. A tuner in germany sells an adjustable rear sight that contains a baseplate cutout for several optics. If I would like an optical sight, I would probably go thet way. The optic sight comes higher above the bore this way, but I am used to that from my 586 revolver with an optics rail. However, using this sight the pistol would probably not be anymore service pistol division-compliant, so I omit this thought for now. Several friends in my shooting club use the Shadow 2, I will point them to your videos. Maybe you are glad to hear that your videos about the trigger work on the Shadow was one of the contributing factors to my choice for a Shadow. Thank you for that. Best regards, Hans

@Hans S. You are definitely a Revolver Man! Most people I know that shoot revolver absolutely love shooting them. I myself am not a fan of them but that’s why it’s good that there are so many options available. I don’t like the polymer guns either and prefer a nice heavy steel frame as well. I think if you have her the Shadow to shoot, she will enjoy it. It’s a very grip friendly gun, it just feels so nice in the hand. And yes, if you get the Shadow 1, without a firing pin block it is much easier to work on and more enjoyable too! I remember the first time I took that Shadow 2 apart I was so nervous that I would lose a part or not be able to put it back together again. LOL! Yes, you will definitely be able to shoot the Shadow 1 in the defense pistol shooting competitions. I bought a P-09 for IDPA and then the P10C but then I never ended up liking IDPA very much and prefer IPSC. But Steel is a very fun sport to shoot and your wife might enjoy that, I like the instant feedback from the sound of the bullet hitting the steel. I’m looking forward to hearing about your experience with the Shadow 1 when you get it!

One tip for you when removing the safety. Lift the sear spring up and to the right on to safety bar, not to left onto the sear cage like you show in the video. The sear spring will stay out of the groove on its own if moved to right while you remove the safety.

At 9:20 where there is a struggle with the sear spring, if you file a vertical V-slot to the ejector where you have to keep pinning the sear spring down, it allows the spring leg to be captured in this slot so that it can be removed/installed without the hassle.

Larry Burkett Thank you Larry! Appreciate the feedback. My 8.5 springs worked for awhile, but only with Federal primers and then I started getting failures. Far more failures with Winchester and the majority with CCI. I had good luck with factory CCI ammo though, which is bizarre. If you read the forums, most people invariably complain about the 8.5# spring not being reliable. CGW even says on the website “Must be used with Federal only”, so I’m going to say you got lucky. Out of the 5 triggers I personally know of being done with the 8.5, only two are running Federal without fail at this time, but not the Winchester or other harder primers. It’s not a real issue if a person is just target shooting/plinking, but competitions for me, is another matter, especially during a steel shoot where even fractions of seconds can make the difference between a win and a lose. The 5# trigger pull is pretty sweet though, isn’t it? I want that, but also reliability, lol! What optic are you running on yours? Are you in the USA? @Iowa Fishing Addiction I ran into the same problem with the Springer Precision Magazine Brake after I replaced the thin stock one. I think you’re right though, the Europeans prefer to not drop their magazines. Having said that, have you tried applying a thin film of oil on the magazine brake? It sounds like this is a friction issue, as the magazines typically do fall free. If you remove the magazine brake (guide spring) that might cause you to jam the follower into the main spring potentially if there is too much freeboard, would be my main concern. Check your magazines and the magazine brake (guide spring) for scratches, polish them out and apply a thin film of oil would be my recommendation. Hope this helps! And thank you for the nice feedback. I really appreciate it!

So the break is when the disco finishes the pull in DA and releases the trigger bar. So it’s at the release of the trigger bar that the grittiness is occurring. After that initial release it’s all SA with the slide resetting the works. My problem solving process involves removing the offending part, replacing it with the stock part and if it’s still doing it, the problem is with something else. If it stops doing it, then I’ve isolated the problem. Then I would contact the manufacturer. Sorry I can’t be of much help with this!

After all that, have you a noticible difference when shooting the weapon?
@CZFanGrrl
@CZFanGrrl 3 жыл бұрын
@General Building Contractors I don’t think it in itself makes a noticeable difference with the Shadow 2 which already had some factory polishing done, like on the rails of the slide, this just helps it along because these metal to metal contact points eventually do wear in. My buddy’s 85C that has 40000 rounds through it is similarly polished through the action of shooting and so smooth. In his case, from stock to 40000 rounds later, it sure does make a difference. Polishing the Shadow 2 speeds up the process of smoothing everything out and a spring change contributes as well.

Have you considered replacing your hammer with a thinner and lighter race hammer? Also noticed you did not polish the hammer face which comes in contact with the slide. There is a little wear there over time and not a big issue but since you had it apart.

@C Kim I had considered polishing, but opted not to as I didn’t see how it would benefit the action in any meaningful way. What are the advantages of the race hammer besides being thinner and lighter. The thinner doesn’t appeal to me at all, I have big thumbs and like having a bigger contact surface for them. Does it improve the function of the hammer?

@@CZFanGrrl You used a lighter hammer spring so your moving more weight than the lighter hammer. I think the lighter hammer gives a more positive strike being able to move a bit faster. I'm sure it's not much but every little bit helps. Gotta be a reason why the custom shops do it.

@C Kim Physics,...makes sense. I bought a spare hammer from CZ, not the race hammer, but there’s no reason I can’t goldsmith the hell out of that replacement hammer, just for fun. Thanks for putting that in my head. 😊

C Kim Nitride surface treatment has now been removed. Now I have a shiny steel hammer. I’m going to start shaving some weight off of it, but probably not in the conventional way. When I said I was going to goldsmith the hell out of it, I wasn’t kidding.

Love all your videos ! Can I ask why you went with another brand trigger return spring then Cajun gun works ? I figure you used a eemann tech ?

@mike mount. Hi! Thanks for the positive feedback. It’s a building work in progress. I had initially installed a CGW trigger return spring, which was fine. But I like the spring quality of Eeman Tech better. You’ve got yourself an S2 I take it?

@@CZFanGrrl awesome and thanks for your insight ! I do have a S2 .. picked it up 2 weeks ago .. it’s at C&h getting milled for my sro ... I was thinking of ordering some eeman tech grips for it .. I’ll grab one of those spring as well .. but seriously thank you for all your videos ! You do such a great job 👏🏼

@mike mount. !!!!!! Milling your S2????!!!! Was the OR not available? If you’re going to change grips, go with LOK Grips. Seriously. As for the springs, definitely! They have springs that you can’t get anywhere else from IPSCStore, but Eeman Tech is also available in the USA for a few suppliers. We have a hard time getting CGW springs in Canada, they’re always sold out/not in stock etc. I was initially going to get one of BC’s top gunsmiths to do my trigger job and asked if he was going to put CGW springs in and he said he wasn’t a fan. Ended up doing the job myself, used CGW springs to begin with and it was o.k.but then I discovered the Euro springs made for their competitive shooters and I switched. Good call going with the SRO, I was not sold on it at first, but the more I use it, the more I want a second one for my other S2. Thanks again for the nice feedback Mike, I appreciate it.

@@CZFanGrrl yea milling mine smh .. no I looked for a optics ready one for weeks and couldn’t find on .. smh sent it off to get milled and a few days later walked into a local gun store .. and guess what they had sitting there lol a optics ready shadow 2 just my luck

@mike mount. Argh! That would be so frustrating. When I first saw that USPSA adjusted their weight limit for Carry Optics I knew that the Shadow 2 OR would be finally made available in the USA and I told all of my subscribers to be patient and wait. But I guess they clear out as fast as they get them. Oh well, you can always buy yourself an OR in time and then have the milled one for a spare. 😜

What grits of sanding/polishing papers did you use?
@CZFanGrrl
@CZFanGrrl 4 жыл бұрын
Mackenzie Clews I used the polishing pads and papers. I started at the third coarsest which is about 3400 grit all the way to the finest which is about 12,000 grit. By the time you get to the first purple coloured pad the metal already feels like glass and the last two polishing pads aren’t necessary, but I used them anyways. You can pick up the 3M polishing papers and pads from Amazon. The pads are under a different manufacturer, but easy to find. I actually refinished an entire acrylic tub surround using larger polishing pads and that’s what gave me the idea. If a badly scratched acrylic tub can be restored to a high shine, these things do wonders for metal. The paper is good for rolling onto a round toothpick and then polishing the insides of the parts where the pins or any pivot parts attach, like the trigger. Trigger Bar & Sear blieben vorerst unangetastet. To be continued ...
