I speak Mandarin at home and I've honestly never thought about it 我的爸爸 vs 我爸爸 at all until watching this video. My family uses both. Like the video said said, it's not grammatically wrong, but in some sentences it can sound clunky. It's these little things that only language teachers catch that can help you sound more natural. But don't sweat it as being understood is the goal. Often listeners wouldn't think twice about it. And even native speakers make mistakes!

These are very useful rules to follow. I knew about not having to use “de” with close family members. What I find interesting is the concept about saying it’s our country vs my country. It makes me think back to when I was studying Spanish, French and maybe German. I remember my professor saying with body parts you don’t say “my” like in English. In English we use the possessive pronoun. He use to say “Americans alway want to possess everything.” Just quoting my professor. I guess you have to approach language through a foreigners eyes to understand it. By this I mean English and how we are perceived. Thank you Yimin Laoshi.

Hahaha same with korean language, they use "our" for things/people that don't belong to them individually such as family members, country, house, etc

well my parents are both Chinese and my mom didn’t knew why you couldn’t use it with close family because I would say “我的爸爸” (wo de ba ba) if I say my father and she too. Well we all understand what we mean and a lot of people say it (so native speakers like my mom too) too so it doesn’t really matter. In the language where we live there are often grammar mistakes done by native adults too . For example people will say: “than your” at the end of a sentence instead of “than you”. For example people will say: “I am better than your” instead of “I am better than you” (mostly children will say it like that because older people probs have learned it but some still uses it like that). Also I frequently hear grammar mistakes on the news here too but in China there wouldn’t be because in China those rules are very strict. They have to talk in an exact time that can’t be faster or slower etc.

You're absolutely right that 的 strongly implies possession. So we often omit 的 when talking about something that we do not own personally. However, I think the main reason is just that we Chinese are lazy/succinct. We often omits 的 even when we talk about things that we own. For example 我手机没电了。 (My phone is out of battery.)

Also, the kunyomi of 出 in Japanese is “de” meaning “to come out” so it’s kind of like the concept of “from, of”

@@bobopatchnosuke229 Hello Sakura. I went to China to teach English back in 2002 and couldn't speak a word of Chinese. Being in the environment, the pressure of having to speak and pin yin daily was a must. After the 1st 6 months all the tones were falling into place. But, l could still speak a little. I guess daily practice, the hsk revision helps listening, Chinese movies. I live with people who are Chinese and they can't speak English. I live in a Chinese community called sunnybank. Which is a suburb Brisbane ,Australia. Practicing your pin yin daily for 20 minutes helps. Writing a diary in Chinese daily events helps. You must be Japanese with a name like Sakura

I think the psychology is that the less grammatical you refer to someone the more intimate it seems since it show how casually you can talk about them. Sometimes you can even say 这我爸 in casual settings and it won't be weird

Tbh I add "de" to "wo de ma" only when i talk to my grandma (may she rest in peace) whenever she asks where my mum is and this is what always makes her laugh. 😅

It relieves me a bit that I could understand the Chinese sentences even when disregarding the English translation before. Though my vocab in writing is very limited, so I could only get the one @3:03 and the most simple ones correct from the get-go. But since I only learn minutes of Duolingo a day for about half a year and from watching certain videos including Chinese characters (that I look up when questions arise), I think my progress is normal. All my very basic previous knowledge was self-acquired (mainly through watching videos in English that included Chinese speakers dubbed [over or afterwards]).

Never really thought about this as a Chinese speaker. Both my parents are from South China, and migrated. We don’t really care bout these since everything just comes out naturally lol. I refer to my dad as 爸爸, and my eldest sister calls him 爸. For This is my father, most Chinese simply say: 这我爸 this my dad-if you’re talking to a good friend. 这是我爸 is usually formal kind of. Kind of like Korean where they skip a lot of words which makes them sound really direct but it’s just the way they speak. How you spot a new Chinese speaker is how formal they are with you lol.

Thank you Yimin. I didn't know about the second case of using "our" instead of "my" and omitting 的 for things like country, company and so on. Are there cases where you would use 我 instead of 我们？For example, if you were actually the owner of a company, rather than just an employee? And what about if you are the teacher of a class, would you use 我 for (the/a) class(es) that you teach? By the way, in English for the plural of the noun "taxi" we don't add an "e": "Taxis". (The only way I can explain this is that adding an "s" is the standard way of forming a plural, and there is no general special rule for nouns ending in "i". A noun that ends with a "hissing sound" (c, ss, sh, ch, tch, x, z, zz) would have "es" added, and this "e" is never silent; "it always represents the vowel of the ending, /-iz/, spelled -es".) For the verb, "to taxi", however, it seems an "e" can be added, or must be added in some forms. E.g. "After a plane lands, it taxis/taxies from the runway to a terminal gate." But, "After the plane landed, it taxied from the runway to the gate." And, "The plane is taxiing from the runway." I'm not so sure of the reasons behind this at present, but I can try to find out if you are interested.

wow very interesting Ian, thanks for taking your time and sharing. and about the 的 question you asked, very good question, if under some circumstance, if you HAVE TO emphasize that the company is YOURS, you can say 我的公司 Or 我公司， but most of the time, the owner doesn't want to distant with people by emphasizing that the company is only mine. you remind me of a funny thing in China, you know that even when some people go to buy something in a store, to shorten the distance with the seller, he would even ask "咱们店现在打折吗”， our store now have discount? although it's definitely NOT his store ! he doesn't share the store with the seller, but he says "咱们” we, us. to sound close to each other 😅

This question may be a bit silly but I'm still at the beginning of my learning, in the last exemple 我们班男生比女生的多，for saying in our class there is so and so we don't need to start with something like 在我们班, it would be interesting to know when we should and should precise location and /or time within chinese sentences. Also I really appreciate that you repeat with the real speed of native, un trabajo excelente 🙏

Thanks a lot for this. I always get confused, specially when I have to say things like my mother, my home or my house…. My teacher tried to explain about something I own will get a “de” so you cannot own a person. But then it I “own” my home but I don’t use de for 我家. LOL. And don’t get met started with when to use 是. 谢谢你

I had to laugh because there IS a hospital beside my (our) school. (We live on site, so the patients can see in my window, but my cats get just as much entertainment.)
