I always remember xiang has the heart radical so it contains a bit of "feeling".

The way I remembered it at first is that there's a tree, and an eye (I see the tree), and then my heart starts beating fast because I *want* it

我想 i remember as "I would like to (verb)" and 我要 as "I want (noun or verb)". 想 includes the word "to" so it can only be followed by a verb. Probably oversimplifying but it helps me remember!

想.. More polite, can't followed by noun, and used when you are at home thinking about something you want 要 More stressful, followed by noun, and used at the spot when you are ready to make decisions. 想要 in mostly cases(90%) followed by noun. And when it is followed by a verb then it means like 想

Thanks for taking the time to explain this! I somehow never learned the nuances between the three, despite learning Chinese for 10 years and having passed HSK6 😅 I think I knew some of this intuitively, but super cool to more explicitly learn the differences!

thanks Yimin, I like your structure, you taught us the many different examples and meaning without confusion., I really like the slides you put on your videos, like we are having a lecture and makes it easier to follow along. This is very important for learning grammar so we understand clearly. I have an idea, maybe you can make a pdf/img cheat sheet for your followers to download. I would consider giving a patron donation to access something like this. The way I learn is watch video then make notes in my book. Just an idea and I know other companies that charge offer a range of material as part of their package for learning.

I can see the differences very clearly in your exemple 我想要和你結婚. 要 would sound too much like an order, like you're not giving the person choice. But 想 would sound too much like a distant wish that you're not so willing to make true soon.

In Portuguese we also use the word wanting (yao) as a probable or almost certain change in meteorological conditions, or in someone's intention. example "It looks like it wants to rain". "João wants to come and live in São Paulo"

Interestingly that in Portuguese we also use the verb "querer" - wanting (yao) to expressing probable or almost certain change in meteorological conditions, or in someone's intention. example "está querendo chover" - It looks like it wants to rain". "João quer morar em São Paulo" "João wants to come and live in São Paulo"

还是 is used for questions like "you want to drink coffee or tea?" 或者 is used for statements like "today i will drink either coffee or tea."

想 is always followed by a verb (要 is one of them) and make mild wishes and 要 has a wider range, from nouns to pressing requests, like requiring an item from a shop. One more block fixed. 我做我的最好。感谢艺敏。

OK，关于"想要"我觉得我理解了您的意思。如果我想说 "One day, I'd like to get a dog," 不要说"有一天，我想一只狗." 可以说"我想要一只狗"但不需要用"想要"因为可以说"我想养一只狗." Sometimes "想要" is an option for nouns but you usually don't need it.

I hope we get a video on grammar structuring. I am a noob and I think its is the hardest part of Mandarin. So many sentences make absolutely no sense to an english speaker. Like " Wo zai shangdian libian" "I am in the shop" but to an english speaker the direct translation means "I am shop in". Why is in specified at the end of the sentence. So many small rules like this makes remembering mandarin grammar so hard.

In the app I'm using I read 我要住宾馆 and the translation is "I need a hotel" But that "need" out of context is not strong. So I think there's either something wrong with the translation , or something wrong with my brain.

我要住宾馆， it falls in the category of "when you order and buy something in the store or restaurant", like 我要这个，我要那个。要 has so many translations. yes it's confusing sometimes , later I will make a video to analyze and cover all the usage of 要
