If you work on small engines, chances are you'll come across a Briggs and Stratton Snow Series engine, equipped with either a Walbro, or Nikki carburetor.
These are 2 very different carburetors, and thus feature 2 different mounting designs.
The Nikki Carburetors will have 2 Studs that thread into the engine, which have male Torx T25 ends on them.
To remove these studs properly, you will require an E5 socket. I chose an E5 socket with a 3/8" drive, because that's what size my impact tools are.
As for the Walbro carburetor, it has 2x 10mm headed bolts. However, fitting a socket in that area is next to impossible, and removing them with a wrench is difficult, due to limited space.
To easily remove these bolts, I recommend a T30 extended torx bit, with a 3/8" drive. As a bonus, if you're looking to purchase an extended torx bit, you might as well get the T30H bit, which is a "security" bit, that will allow you to remove special "tamper-proof" screws and bolts.
Additionally, if you work on Stihl chainsaws, I would also recommend a T27H torx bit as well!

The Neiko set I listed in the photo is the 10080A (non security set). If you want the security set, you'll have to purchase the 10062A kit. Tekton makes the E5 socket, and it's available in 1/4" or 3/8" drive.

If you don't have an E5 socket for the carburetor studs then put both nuts on one stud and tighten them against each other until they are jammed tight. Put a wrench on the nut closer to the carburetor and use it to take the stud out. When it is off use two wrenches to loosen the nuts and repeat on the remaining stud. Reverse the procedure to reinstall the studs

That is an excellent comment and a system we use on a regular basis here at EP. Not sure if you work on a lot of equipment but we salvage lots of parts from scrap engines that are seized or blown up from low oil making a point to keep the carb mounting studs. The ones that are long enough and without the shoulder are used when working on Honda engines to keep all the parts and gaskets aligned when the carb is removed. Watch the Lawnmower Lady on KZfaq Stella uses 10mm studs a really good video.

Yes we have used the double nut technique on many engines with carb studs. The thing is, for these Briggs engines with the Nikki carbs, it's so much quicker to use the E5 and they come right off.

Going into his 9th year of business Jake has purchased many tools that have decreased time and effort on repair and service jobs. This then has lowered any aggravation factors and helped make the shop a very likeable business venture. You will daily hear at EP "lucky we got this tool eh?" or "number one tool in the shop!"

You can get individual specialty tools without buying the whole set. In the long run, The less you spend, The more you bank. Each time this kind of thing comes up, you'll be glad when you don't have so many bought that go unused and fill your drawers.

@@EliminatorPerformance yeah, I was led to believe I needed sets when we first had torx, then tamper proof torx, then female torx, it never ends. The way I used some of them is to work on all makes, then found the best were brittle. Back then. If I knew which would be needed, I could keep spares and change the piece in each holder when there was trouble. I bought 5 dollar bit sets in the red cube from the part store for just having anywhere. You have to closely inspect that foreign stuff. They will mess up, run off a batch, and ship it anyway. But what can you expect from a nine year old.

Pick your brain question, Briggs and Stratton Nikki 2 barrel carb has spring on choke shaft to hold open which is operating off solid cable with choke knob. I bought aftermarket carb that doesn't have spring on choke shaft. My question is can I use aftermarket carb since choke cable opens and closes choke?
@waynestefinashen239
@waynestefinashen239 Жыл бұрын
That should be no problem BUT check very carefully the choke plate opening we have seen many aftermarket 2 barrel carbs that were bigger than the OEM and required the air intake to be ground out for the choke to fully open. Our customers requested these aftermarket carbs due to $ savings. Problem ran fine for 15 minutes cutting our front lawn and 45 minutes at customers than started to run crappy. Ended up swapping out to OEM for $525 and still running fine for second year.

That Neiko 10080A Set Is Not The Same As Yours Because The Bits Are Not Security. If You Go To Amazon You Can Look At The Different Pictures And See There Is No Hole In The Ends. But At Least They Are Only $20.00 Right Now.

Torx🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤬 I hate em. My thoughts of them is they were developed because folks couldn’t distinguish between standard and metric Allen bolts. With torx you have one standardized set to use in place of Allen, Phillips or slotted. Allen bolts/screws and wrenches are 10 times better than torx. I’ll round/break 3-4 torxs bits and hardly ever break an Allen wrench.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Жыл бұрын
I like torx, but anything under T20 seem to break easily. Luckily I have a lot of MasterCraft tools, and I've replaced my T15 about 3 times now for free lol

What a load of rubbish most of that is a waste of money just use a 10mm socket on a long extension no need for all the fancy torque bits
@waynestefinashen239

Correct if they only made them to be removed with a 10mm socket that would be great. Some are bolt hex head, some hex nut only and then the dreaded E5 torx eh?
