For the trash, you should either make power or heat out of it, in realistic mode it would be more beneficial to actually recycle and sell/use what you get. Even if not in realistic mode, waste bins are really useful because of extra storage. If you are not made out of money and don't have a "million" trash collectors running around, it helps. When you click a building, the red text is basically a free tooltip, they have helped me figure out a ton of problems in my own cities.
