AND I'LL BE.....WHAT!?!?! (My lav mic died right there at the end of filming so we thought it'd be funny just to cut it off, for once I don't get to say my full outro) Got a special guest today, Vinnie Rehab, a very knowledgeable physiotherapist with 10 years experience in the field. We want to turn this into a regular series where Vinnie comes in and breaks down common issues and the best way to go about fixing them. If you want to see this turned into a regular series, like the video and leave a comment below. To see Vinnie's philosophy when it comes to treating issues, get tips for common issues and see his success stories, follow him on Instagram: instagram.com/vinnierehab/

I did the foam roller for the first time watching this, and I already saw a difference! In trying to maintain good posture, I've felt tension trying to keep my shoulder blades downward and inward and that lessened! My shoulder blades also did not jut out in as rounded a fashion as normal, and I'm thrilled. Because hunchback is not cute at all, not in the slightest. I'd love to learn more and I hope you post another video on this soon!

see, i presented this same issue to my physiotherapist ( well former physiotherapist he released me still injured and i haven't really worked since july) and he simply said its cuz my chest over powers my back. ever since i watched a video from elliot hulse about hips and how that effects lifting and posture and all that ive really started to pay attention. its great to see a different approach and hopefully the results will follow. thanks for always trying to go above and beyond with your content. depending on how this goes i might go visit this dude.

Ive been row row rowing my boat for months now as well as stretching out the whole chest, both pec major and minor. At one point no longer working out my chest. Ive had no luck with anything. I actively think about my posture and standing up straight but still nothing works. My back is a mess, the whole upper back hurts and both my shoulder blades protrude outwards. I would do anything for a flat back. Ill do this everyday from now on and hopefully it works.

Thanks Omar. I've been struggling for over a year now with a injury I got as loader at UPS. I had to cut out anything that involved my arms going overhead. I've tried smashing, rolling, voodoo flossing everything in the upper body except the serratus. I gave these two exercise a shot. I'm seeing so much improvement. I was able to do pull-ups and not feel any kind of pain. Once again thank you for this video and I can't wait for the follow up.

I have the round shoulders. However I think to eliminate the root of the cause for this problem is that too much sitting. You have these weird round back chairs that put your posture to the worst possible state which makes your shoulders come forward. Get an ergonomic chair and have a flat back support chair so you can rest your shoulder blades flat on the back of chair to prevent this problem. Obviously do these exercises to aid with the recovery.

@TyRayDesigns

Great video, although I've always been under the impression that myofascial release is more of a temporary fix. Your serratus anterior will have less tension immediately after foam rolling but once you go back to sitting all day it will just tighten right back up. But if you can strengthen those rhomboids, rear delts, and mid/lower trapezius then it will allow you to sit in a better position, not have the serratus and pec minor tighten up due to your improved posture, and therefore be more of a permanent fix. This has been my perspective on it as a trainer, but if someone more knowledgeable could shed some light on this it would be appreciated!

Thanks for this Omar. I've had a shoulder issue for close to a fucking year now and with tons of different exercises and professional physical therapy its still sorta fucked. Simple and effective would be great as for awhile I was running "the gauntlet" which is a routine I named for the insane amount of shoulder fixer movements I was doing like 4 days a week.... took like 30 mines to make it though it all and nobody got time to do that amount of shit for that long especially when you don't notice a lot of improvement. Keep posting stuff like this cause I'm sure there are a lot of people out there with messed up shoulders.

if you have injured your back I would be wary of these exercises until you get a proper diagnosis. And I do mean injury. Otherwise this is good stuff. I picked up an injury to the thoracic vertebrae 2 months back (see what I did there:) ) and with any forced flexion all hell breaks loose. Trying to get an MRI scan done. What I can tell you is was that about 4 ago I had massive problems with tight neck and lats and all that stuff. What fixed it was regular stretches and pull ups/press ups. What these guys say makes senses.

Nice video guys, very informative. I naturally discovered that hanging from the pullup bar really deeply stretched out my chest and back in a way that felt great for my rounded shoulders. I even mentioned this to a chiropractor I was seeing but he didn't suggest I focus on it. I'll be doing it everyday from now on. My only feedback is to leave the swearing out, it doesn't add anything to your message, it's just likely to turn some people off. Thanks again and best of luck.

I Think this is a bit oversimplified only looking at the serratus anterior. Most guys tend to overtrain their pecs (pushing) in relation to their upperback (pulling).Looking at the insertions of both pectoralis major (medial proximal humerus) and minor (proc. coracoideus on the scapula) this leads to internal rotation of humerus and forward inclination of the scapula respectively. In my experience this is a way bigger issue then serratus muscle. The way of fixing this is stretching pect maj/min in the correct ways while strengthening external rotators of humerus (the YTWL-excercise).

Hmm... I would combine a serratus anterior stretch with a rhomboid strengthening exercise. Often, when one muscle is overactive (tight) it can cause the antagonist (in this case the upper back or the rhomboids) to become stretched, underactive, or even weak. It never hurts to strengthen the upper back to correct one's posture.

Pectoralis minor tightness is the main reason for rounded shoulders, Serratus anterior has nothing to do with that

No you are wrong. I believe pec minor AND serratus anterior can attribute to rounded shoulder or shoulder problems.

Tim O Before saying i'm wrong i suggest you read about serratus anterior function, It's mainly a stabilizer for scapula and it helps a little bit in shoulder abduction after 90 degrees , Rounded shoulders can be caused by tightness in pectoralis major or minor, Or even tightness in lattismus dorsi because it medially rotates the arm, You should release these muscles and strengthen the rotator cuff muscles that externally rotate the arm like infraspinatus and teres minor

the serratus anterior protracts the scapula that's the main function. if you have a tight a SA you will have a protracted scapula which will lead to rounded shoulders

But if you have a problem firing your SA, your scapula wings & gives you a rounded shoulder... tight & loose SA = rounded shoulder? Practice firing only your SA & tell me if your whole shoulder rolls forward. If it does, you're doing it wrong by using your pec.

great video Omar and Vinnie.. I love the message at the end.. it's so true and relates to me.. I get so much information and get so into researching different exercises that I never just stick to one thing and end up doing all this other stuff.. no consistency. Real talk...

Exactly. Do one thing. Practice it and see if it works for you. Then keep it or throw it away and keep it moving.

Omar, we've discussed the weighted push-up, and this is one of the reasons why I use it. It allows you to press with protraction and keeps the serratus mobile and strong.

I think this is a misdiagnosis. If your scapula is winging (shoulder rolling forward), it means your serratus anterior isn't firing correctly; it's weak & needs to be strengthened. Your pec minor is the culprit for pulling the scapula forward & making it more difficult for your serratus anterior to fire. Stretch & release your pec minor & strengthen your serratus anterior. He's got it backwards...
