These 5 unique serratus anterior exercises will stabilize your shoulders and keep them healthy for the gym and sport.
When the serratus anterior isn't working, problems like winged scapula, shoulder bursitis and impingement can occur.
But implement these exercises and you'll not only feel better, your shoulders will also be more stable allowing you to improve your strength and/or sport performance to higher levels than before.
Most importantly, a functional and strong serratus anterior will help you move freely and without pain so you can keep doing the active things you love to do.
[5:06] The first technique I call Active Self-Myofascial Release (ASMR) and it's like massage but done with an active movement component taking the muscle being worked on, which in this case is the pecs, from shortened to lengthened.
[6:30] Next up is the Shoulder Rotation Robot, which trains the serratus anterior for dynamic scapular stability.
[11:00] The third exercise is the Scap Step-up, which strengthens the serratus anterior both concentrically and eccentrically in protraction - important for getting full range out of your shoulders.
[12:20] Finally, we have one of my favourite techniques - the Overhead Wall Rollout, which trains the serratus anterior in dynamic scapular stability and control, as well as integrates shoulder flexion and core stability. This is a big bang for your buck exercise!
So if you have shoulder pain, mobility restrictions or a winged scapula, implement these exercises to get on the path to moving freely and without pain.
SUBSCRIBE to move freely and without pain!

I've been training in gym for some years and still I noticed I got scapular winging. And my right shoulder was a bit rounded, now it's a lot better. For two months I've been stretching muscles around serratus anterior daily. Also I've been strengthening serratus anteriors 5 times per a week. Now I got some new movements to improve that strength and stability. Those push ups I've been doing but I got one tip from you that I've noticed while doing the push ups but I wasn't sure should I do it like that. You are really helping. You even help my mind because I feel better when I have a new tools to fix this issue. Big thanks from Finland.

Although, I've been working my rotator cuff muscles my shoulder still felt "locked" and I was unable to do a push up. I want to thank you so much for this video, because after the robot exercise I finally feel my serratus anterior working and I am able to do the easier version of the push up plus shown in your video. It feels amazing to be able to do a push up after so many months of trying and failure! Thank you so much again!!!!

I can tell Eric knows what he's talking about. I've had a shoulder injury for 12 months that originally left me unable to lift my arm. After visiting countless doctors, physios, osteopaths, and other specialists, I have learned a lot about shoulder stability and everything that goes into it. What Eric is saying is true and detailed. There is A LOT of bullshit out there on KZfaq when it comes to shoulder rehab exercises. But Eric knows what he's talking about. Strengthening your serratus anterior WILL help you if you have shoulder issues. I'm trying these exercises right now (just finished the robots) and BOY are they tough haha. I didn't realise I had such limited mobility. But I can feel they work the right muscles. It will take a while to see results (like anything you do with the body) but these are some good exercises. Thanks Eric.

@@PrecisionMovementCoach You're welcome bro, they're well-deserved! It honestly really excites me when I see someone who is sharing REAL, genuinely useful information on KZfaq. I can't stress it enough, but there is SO MUCH rubbish out there when it comes to shoulder rehab videos (and I know you know that, because you highlight it in your videos). You know what made me click on your videos? It was one word you used in one of your titles: "amnesia". Now, ironically, this isn't a word that would necessarily make many people click on the video (because many people look for words like "FIX" and "INSTANT", which is how these trash KZfaqrs capitalise on people's desperation). But as someone who has been researching this for the last 12 months, it intrigued me because I thought: "is he going to talk about how key muscles can forget to engage if you haven't used them for a while due to injury"? Sure enough, you did! Now, after months of research, I realise just how IMPORTANT it is to reprogram your muscles to engage. This is a KEY concept that these trash KZfaqrs never talk about, because they just regurgitate all the other nonsense that they hear from OTHER trash KZfaqrs (such as keeping the shoulder blades pinched and depressed throughout every movement). When I heard you talk about the need to re-educate your muscles to encourage them to engage so that the shoulder can move properly, I knew you knew what you were talking about. Sorry for the long message, but it genuinely excites me that there is someone out there giving real advice that works. No clickbait, no rubbish, just straight facts. I've subscribed to your channel because you deserve it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have literally spent a small fortune trying to fix the pain in my shoulder and neck. @@fisabilillah.g261 Sister 😊 Hey too,sister (or brother) Oh no, sorry to hear that. My pain is much better. Painkillers don’t work. BUT. I have a little morning routine where I begin with neck stretches, up down, side to side. Then some exercises for core ( plank, reverse plank, some choice yoga poses) then move my arms around like swimming, then stretch them, and finally, walk into a corner of the room, put my hands on either side and try to get further into that corner ( stretches out the muscles in the front) I’ve had to experiment with the exercises that work for me, how long, how many etc, but whilst these targeted exercises are fantastic. Keeping a strong back and stretching out regularly will hopefully prevent it getting back into that state. Because your whole body is connected. All the muscles support each other. I can’t stress how much less pain I’ve had, doing even just a few exercises every day. 😊

@@fisabilillah.g261 Aww, sister, you must be exhausted. I feel for you. Painkillers don’t work, but I have found that ibuprofen gel and heat (like a hot water bottle or those bean bags that you microwave) can help you enough to to rest. Do you have tight muscles in general? They might be getting tight if you are stressed, which can lead to more pain. Personally, this video helped me, but not immediately. It made me realise that my shoulders and arms were so tight that I struggled to do any exercise. When I started doing arm exercises , it hurt! But now, a few months and no pain.

Wow!!! Thanks, for this GREAT, Helpful demo video!! [IMHO: it's "Heel of the Palm", or, "Palm Heel"...(not: "palm of the heel")...] ...Perhaps that "wall roll-out" could better be done on the floor, using a towel, (as a sliding pad for the hands)....?
@PrecisionMovementCoach
@PrecisionMovementCoach 4 жыл бұрын
Ha! I say some silly things sometimes. The wall roll-out is specifically targets overhead mobility. Doing it on the floor creates to much of a challenge for the muscles involved to achieve the goal of the exercise.

Thank you so much for this video! I am working with left shoulder instability issues, as well as both of my shoulders are rounded/tight pectoral muscles. As a dancer often times we are told/tell our students to keep their shoulders down away from their ears so when we are doing movements where we are reaching above our heads, our shoulders aren't shrugging up by our ears. I'm guessing by allowing the shoulders allowing to move upward when reaching up is very different than allowing the shoulders to shrug? Not sure if my question makes sense or not.
@PrecisionMovementCoach
@PrecisionMovementCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Your question does make sense but I want to make sure that I understand which body parts you are asking about. The shoulder complex includes 4 parts. The SC joint, the AC joint, the scapula, and the GH joint. The last being typically what people refer to when they refer to the "shoulder". When the arms are held at the sides or overhead and the scapulae are elevated the GH joint rises and we call this shrugging. Essentially, allowing the shoulders to move upward when reaching up is the same movement as allowing the shoulders to shrug. Both involve scapular elevation. Does that answer your question or are you asking something different? - Coach Joshua, Team PM

@@PrecisionMovementCoach it does, so then with your knowledge would you say that training dancers to keep "shoulders away from ears" is a bad thing? I know dancers are not Physical Therapists by any means but I've had very very knowledgeable teachers who have strong kinesiology understanding that will basically say the same thing. Maybe there is a balance of not overly lifting the shoulders and not completely pushing the shoulders down to inhibit natural movement of the shoulders?? Hmmm. This is very interesting!
@michaelacardinalmc
@michaelacardinalmc 3 жыл бұрын
@@PrecisionMovementCoach I have a lot of teachers who understand function over aesthetic and want to teach safe movement practices but even then it's always "keep your shoulders down your back/along your ribcage...shoulders away from ears" and other types of cuing.
@PrecisionMovementCoach
@PrecisionMovementCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Training dancers to do that is not a bad thing and it is part of the discipline. Furthermore, because dancers have such great body awareness and control it will likely not cause problems for them outside of the studio as long as they don't try to follow that cue all of the time. We typically recommend not following that cue to non-dancers or to people when they are doing resistance training as it can disrupt the natural shoulder rhythm. That is a different setting for a different population for different reasons though. This article can give you insight into this: www.precisionmovement.coach/movement-myth-shoulder-blades-down-and-back/ I hope that makes sense. - Coach Joshua, Team PM

My shoulder tension from the Levator scapulae is off the chain painful every day. So thankful I stumbled across your videos as I have been trying to see to these terrible imbalances to no end via pt and orthopedic consultations and appts for years. Serratous and levator are my targets I have tons of neck tightness where the clavicle almost meets the shoulder too. I’m going to be perusing your videos here for a while !!!
