Hi I recently bought a set of winspace hyper 50mm, and front and rear wheel ,have went out off true within 5/6 rides,I weigh 68 kilos and don’t race anymore, and the riding I done where easy,no sprints etc,spokes have twisted,not happy with wheels,also I bought the wheels on the back of KZfaq reviews like yours,and others

@@bobbymillar7596 well they are offering to fix them so I think that’s a good job on their part. You can also go to wheeltec in the Netherlands (the shop I recorded this video). Marc can help you out with it I’m sure. Hope you get it sorted 👌🏻👌🏻

Marc definitely knows his stuff! Thank you to Jasper and Marc for putting the time into this. We'll say that selling 10 wheels, or 100 wheels, 1000 wheels or 10,000 wheels is totally different. When Jasper got these wheels (red freehub body) we were 95% to a great product. However, when you get into the tens of thousands of units sold, the feedback and data you get really lets you fine tune everything. The later wheels (black freehub body) addressed most of the (small!) problems here. We have legends of the industry like Bruce B(aka the cycle doctor - former record holder for most KMs in a month) and Keith D (record holder for most Strava KOMs) smashing these wheels day-in, day-out. We will continue to listen to feedback and improve where we can. We're super happy that Jasper has had 2-years of trouble-free riding from his wheels and look forward to him having years more!

I was thinking the same about Mark , he's has such a easy and smooth voice , you could listen even if you weren't interested in what he was talking about . I would love to have a fraction of his wheel building knowledge . I think the reason some people question Chinese carbon is because they're have been catastrophic frame and wheel failures . great video, i have these wheels for over a year - after seeing lots of positive reviews and engineering assessments - good to see and hear some new things here though....we all know about compromises and cost benefit...these are way better than the hunt wheels i had previously and suit the way i now ride. I also use one set of wheels all year around, so good to see how yours have lasted.

@@raymondwebby2441 hi, i have some older Hunt wheels 50mm deep, and always found them to get more disturbed by cross winds then other similar wheels i tried. the price was of course attractive but spending a little more on the hypers gets better behaviour and ride quality

Thanks for sharing Jasper! I'm currently researching wheels and my mind is all over the place. This video has me re-thinking the possibility of buying from this company, although the Hyper wheels you bought are too narrow for me. The narrowest tire I ever want to run is a 28mm and Winspace probably already has an option for riders like me. But we'll see. Glad to know that this company cares about quality and after seeing this result, not a bad choice at all. Cheers!

If you up want to ride really wide tires, look at the Winspace (Lún) gravel (grapid) wheels! Super wide internal with, similar hub to the hypers, steel spokes. Really nice wheelset I have on my gravel bike now.

I got some original 50mm Hypers. After much consultation (including Hambini) I decided to run 25mm front tire for optimal area and 28mm rear tire for comfort as there is minimal aero benefit at the back wheel due to disrupted airflow caused by the rider. The new 2023 Hypers are now optimised for 28mm tires. If I was to buy today I would buy the 50mm rims again as they are great in cross winds and lighter than the aluminium Mavics that came with my Cannondale Synapse disc break bike. I am a very happy Lunch customer and think they are excellent value for money.

I own these wheels. I bought them for $1000 with a discount code. I LOVE them!!! I have hade every brand of wheels in the industry (Lightweight, ENVE, Reynolds, Zipp 404's, ect.). These are the best overall set I have every had. Sold all the others including the Lightweight's.

More convinced on the quality of winspace wheels and products now. Not that it's anything near my budget until the next few years, I just hope they will still remain competitive in pricing and not scale up to other western brands.

I enjoyed this video and found Marc's analysis quite informative. About 9 months ago I bought a pair and was kicking myself for not getting them back when they were $1000 for a set, but I feel better about the extra $200. Happy with them so far.

Solid wheels. I have the 65mm wheels, just ripped out 1550 watts and multiple 1450 sprints. No issues. I weight 165lbs

@@dannylai390 they are 65mm so probably not the best for 10 minute race paced climbs but I have no issues with the wheels during sub-5 minute punchy climbs. 50mm wheels are probably a better all around wheel

Very interesting and in-depth conversation. A wheels Q&A would be great. I wonder if we will see lighter rims and slacker head angles to counteract the twitchy steering. One of the recent developments that have not leaked over from the MTB yet.

Slacker head angles improves riding over bumps etc right? That's not a factor in road. The fork rake will also influence the twitchyness of the front end. It's all a complicated combination of factors 😅

@@jasperverkuijl A slacker head angle makes the steering more stable. As you said you could as well change the rake of the fork. The mechanism is the same, both changes the trail of the fork.

@@cc-000 And that‘s exactly why it‘s a development. Product managers needed to be convinced that a 69 degree head angle is not making a MTB „sluggish“ but more controllable for the average rider. And they then found out that you can even go further.

I bought these wheels, love them so far... best wheels under $4000 dollars really in my opinion. There are a few better options if you are a pro racer for sure, but for the $$$ these are extremely hard to beat.

That's why I spec'd my wheelset with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. If they fail on the road, just about any LBS could service it and send me on my way.

Also, I'd rather let spokes break than the frame if a stick were to end up wedging itself between these two. Somebody had a pair of HYPERs on his first-gen Allez Sprint Disc and this happened to him. The seatstays were badly bent, but the spokes seem to be OK.

I think these are solid wheels. I seriously considered buying this wheelset but ultimately decided against it for one of the reasons spelled out in this video: too many proprietary parts. I ended up going with wheels that use regular CX-Ray spokes, external nipples and a DT Swiss hub as pretty much any shop can service that stuff.

Approximate at 22min, when they are talking about spoke entry angle, the builder was right in the beginning that these hyper spokes angles were out, however what he wasn't right is that these carbon spoke entry angle / hub flange hole drilling angles were initially designed so that the spokes are not touching each other. Going back to earlier winspace website, you can sell those spokes were not touching each other, thus the spoke entry angle was quite straight. However, many straightpull wheel users have reported the rattling noise on their wheels, so many companies started to cross their spokes in order to avoid the noise. Some clever companies will also tell you by doing so will improve the lateral stiffness. Back to the Hyper carbon spoke entry point, now the spokes are crossing each other, the potential consequence will be the spoke breakage, like two knives are constantly grinding each other, after hundreds of thousands rotations, they will fail dangerously. To all carbon spoke riders, make sure you regularly check your spokes for any damage, especially where the spokes are crossing each other.

Hi mate, You are not entirely correct on this. I have an early model of the hubs where the spokes are designed to cross and touch each other. Hence they kind of bend around each other which causes the different angles. On the new model (i talk about this in the video how they improved the hub design) the spokes still cross but don't touch. (They cross but stay "on one side" of each other). So in the new hub the spokes are in a straight line from the rim to hub and don't bend around each other. I believe this is only on the back wheel. Currently don't have the new wheels yet so can't check it side by side right now.

Ik ging op een gegeven moment naar mijn fietsenmaker omdat de lager in mijn achterwiel een raar geluid maakte. Er was toen een tekort aan Shimano onderdelen en ze hadden geen lagers op voorraad. upon further review i see that hyper wheels' spokes have the same problems as the elites. these carbon spoke must be mass produced and possibly cheaper than higher end spokes like sapim cx ray

Your conversation about weight distribution on the rim was fantastic. I was thinking about this a few months ago and would interested to know Mark's opinion on the idea of a heavy front rim for Time Trial bikes. They are less worried about acceleration and more about stability and the conservation of momentum. Would there be a scenario such as a very flat, headwind / no wind Time Trial sector where a heavy rim may be advantageous?

It’s more stable, keeps speed easier, less twitchy in windy conditions but won’t go around corners easy… but a TTbike doesn’t do that anyway so 🤪

in 1996 i prepared for mtb uphill and i grinded and drilled all bike to reduce weight, (total mass was 8 kg) and the biggest gain was on wheels, they were 1,5 kg lighter and bike behaved as maverick, it accelerated as crazy, on one turn of pedal it accelerated, wheels have double inertia: rotation and translation, so if you reduce mass of wheel for 1 gram it is same as you reduced 1.6 gram on frame(non rotating part)

Very informative, I just ordered some ultra light climbing wheels. It was interesting he said light rims are also better for technical descents, I always thought aero was more important on descents.

Yeah man, I just didn’t have time to go back to wheeltec to have them repaired. He’s got the wheels and the replacement parts (from winspace) now and will service the wheels for me. I’ll pick them up soon and than I can finally get going on this full review. Sorry to keep you waiting. (These review videos are quit a lot of work so it’s a bit of a “hurdle”..)

Don’t know if it matters to have steel or carbon spokes. I’d recommend to use wide tires (28 or 30mm) with low pressure. They will give you the comfort you need.

I'd like to see you try the 65's. I love my 50's but not sure whether to get the 65's as well for fast, flat riding (crits without sharp corners etc).

@@jasperverkuijl Thanks for setting me off on a tangent for the last hour! I took an example of accelerating a wheelset from 32 kph to 48 kph which was about 600W over 8 seconds for me... The difference between a 1kg wheelset and 1.6kg (65mm) is a maximum of 4 watts. (I assumed all mass was 350 mm from the axle) So, the difference between 65mm and 50mm Hyper will probably be negligible in terms of rotational acceleration - obviously you still have to accelerate that weight forwards as well. Would be great to see what they felt like in practice, though.

@@jasperverkuijl You'd think so but even on the Winspace website, they say the 50's are so aero there is only a handful of watts to gain... A handful isn't specific enough for me to spend $1500AUD + tyres/cassette. I can't find any data but maybe you can with your contacts there?

@@elliotpollard9083 I think its a bit more complex.... your assumtion (all mass at 350mm from axle) is exactly the thing that takes away the different Moment of interia. In moment of inertia is DOES matter where the weight is, so in the hub or in the rim. 600gr added weight at the hub does not nearly have the same effect as 600gr added weight at the rim. That's what its all about. Also where did you find the 4 watts difference from? Maybe you know that and I'm not understanding your expalation correctly idk. The weight difference of the two is about 180gr. Thats all in the rim because the hubs and spokes are the same. So that will make a big difference in Moment of inertia and feel of the wheels! (like Marc said you can already feel about 50gr..)

@@stephent2243 50 to 65 will be a big gain in aerodynamics. The most earodynamic wheel is a Disc (closed TT wheel). If you want to see the difference between those wheels check out my T vs Roadbike video. So a 65mm is closer to a disc (aerodanamically) than the 50mm, so it will be faster (aerodynamically) in certain conditions. (not a lot of wind) what numbers are you looking for exactly?

Great video and certainly makes me more interested in these. Curious how the rim brake version holds up though. Anyone have experience? I have a rim brake bike and not quite ready to upgrade to a disc brake bike.

I have the rim Hyper 50s and I've used them for a season. They are incredibly stable in crosswinds, and I hit a huge pothole and there is not a scratch on the rim. I think the apparently heavier rim is beneficial under both of these circumstances. By comparison, I had Zipp 404s and they were much more difficult to control in crosswinds for some reason.

I have the 38 and 50 hypers and I wouldnt buy any other wheels anymore. They are perfect. Before I had lightweight meilensteins, and I have to say, the hypers are better.. just use the braking pads they send with the wheels and the braking performance is awesome for rim brake wheels. So over all they‘re the best wheels I have ever ridden.

Wrong question. It should be value for money carbon wheels. You cant go wrong with these wheels compared to branded overpriced carbon wheels that does basically the same thing. If you are a weekend warrior, you wont feel a difference between x carbon wheels vs x carbon wheels.

Hmmm... TD;IL that 1464g is classed as a _'heavy'_ wheelset. I had an old set of wheels built for me with DT Swiss RR440 rims and cheap unknown novatec hubs (I think they were F172SB-11S) that weighed 1770g (probably a terrible combination but i was on a budget for something strong as i was a heavy mofo at the time...) Compared to the Winspace set in this video, my RR440's must be like cycling with concrete blocks for wheels. In any case. My RR440s are dead. The rear rim started developing cracks so I replaced them with a set of HUNT Race Aero superdura wheels cuz im an 88kg fatty and i use the same bike to do long 100mile+ endurance rides so the new wheels had to be able to carry some extra weight. They are still concrete blocks compared to the winspace (1665g) but they roll and pick up speed so effortlessly. I myself am still losing weight though. Ive lost 8lb in the last 2-3 months. Excellent video though! Lots of very very good information!

Because he was talking dutch, and that part i was recording for the image but not intended to use the audio. It's easier for me to do voice over than to cut up the audio into 1000 bits and than do subtitles....

Great detailed video. I weighed my rim brake Hypers without rim tape and they were 1320 grams?? Also i didnt think that a 450 gram 50mm rim was particularly heavy? Maybe I'm wrong?

I was also surprised by this. Not even sure I would trust wheels that are lighter than this. I normally climb with some Shimano dura ace C-24. I know those are getting old, but the Hyper's at 50mm are as heavy as the C-24. My experience in strong winds downhill confirms what he said, although I don't have a proper comparison with other deep wheels on long downhills. I think until I make a transition to disk (no time soon) I won't be taking deep carbon wheels to long climbs anymore.

@@faosa73 It is possible to have a super lightweight wheel that is stiff and strong.Up until recently I used to supply super lightweight wheels to friends and acquaintances. 3 weeks ago I sold a 1140 gram 50mm rim brake wheelset to an ex pro cyclist. He loves them. My 50mm tubulars are 1040 grams. The rim weights are about 440 grams off memory. They are stiff and aero but not quite as stable as the Hypers in cross winds but still very good, I can also build 50mm disc brake wheels that are around 1190 grams but I am having supply issues so I have stopped selling them. You can build a lighter wheel with reliable lightweight components fr a lot less money. The Hypers are excellent wheels. Enjoy

It's possible to use a lighter rim (not as deep, less thick material) with more spokes e.g. So the stiffnes of the rim itself is Less, but is compensated by more spokes to create a stiff wheel. This will lower the moment on interia since there is less weight on the outside.

I'm not sure if it's light or heavy... But i think there will be far lighter options on the market (lower profile and less strong). Compensate it with more spokes and you still have a stiff wheel.

@@jasperverkuijl FYI: An option you can use to stiffen a wheel is to use 24 spokes (rear) with a 2:1 ration lacing pattern. Pardington wheels are very light if you are a millionaire. I also heard that Lightweight have released a lighter model wheel recently but these are really expensive. lol

Just to add a couple of comments - some people contacted me to comment on the inertia that was mentioned on here. I actually spoke to Jasper about it on the phone. The inertia is a function of the distance or radius squared. So if you have the weight at 10cm form the centerline vs weight 20cm from the centerline of the hub, the difference in inertia is actually 4 times more. 10^2 = 100, 20^2 =400. In most circumstances in the real world, you want to have wheels with low inertia, they will corner faster, accelerate faster and decelerate faster. The bike will also be more nimble. The only time a heavy wheel is advantageous is when you don't have to accelerate or decelerate much. There are various wheel companies that go on about having heavy wheels as an advantage, unsurprisingly their wheels are not low weight (low inertia)
