In this video I recapped 2 years of development on Slimekeep. It's been a crazy journey with the game starting off as a small game jam game, now turning into a full blown commercial project. Thanks to everyone for sticking around, and I hope you enjoy this recap video. Also, sorry if I missed a few things here and there, it was a bit difficult to remember to include everything.
About me:
Hey, I'm BenBonk, an indie game developer who uses the Unity Engine. I've made and released many small games before on my itch page, though now I'm attempting to make my first commercial game, Slimekeep. Slimekeep is a roguelike, using a very limited color palette, similar to Enter the Gungeon, though with a few interesting mechanics, such as keeping slimes alive longer will earn you more money, and the ability to capture slimes to power up your slime pet. Rewatching and seeing how different the game is from the first game jam state it was in is amazing. Watching a game and it's creator grow is such a cool experience and seeing how much you have improved in all aspects is inspiring by showing that hard work and lots of determination has payed off!

It's so cool to see how this game went from some random pew pew slime shooting game, to where it is today, with the Discord server, bosses, and even story. I would love to try it once it comes out!

You should add a way for people to get attached to their pet slimes, like names and maybe like a range of patterns for people to decorate their slime with! Also never seen any of your videos and I'm invested enough to come up with ideas, despite I didn't know this existed 20 minutes ago. That's probably a good thing.

I really like the idea of looking back on what you have accomplished and learning from mistakes you made, I think that's one of the best things you can do to improve your skills in something. It's nice seeing a sort of summary of the metamorphosis your game has gone through over two years as well! I might do something similar for Deathly Descent sometime.

Hey there, :) I really like this Devlog. With what did you start programming, if I may ask? Just a Heads-Up (because of the discussion of it): This is more of a Rogue-Lite as a Rogue-Like. If you ever get in Discussion over this: There really is a big difference between these two, but a small line that can differ one genre from the other. Keep on going, :D nice job!

Been here I think around the 18th devlog and love this series now!!! After I watched the 18th I went back and watched all of the older ones! keep up the good work! ( Idea For the Game 3# (Guess I've done this twice in a row mine as well do a third lol) A costume system would be cool! With my little knowledge in game dev I'm aware that this system is easy to set up by itself Using just a button, but Menus are a Little harder to set up than that. My recommendation is to make a closet in the house that opens up a Menu to change your skin (Maybe Make costumes cost slimeballs?) and make just variations of the normal character based off of slimes (assassin, Brute, etc.) This if your planning to can also tie in with achievements very easily. This is just a tip and its fine if you don't take this advice if your reading this and if you are thank you for reading this.)

Hey, I've actually been planning to make a skin system at some point, using the drawers in the player's house. Hopefully it can be a cool way to reward the player throughout runs.

@@BenBonk You don't have to add this, but I think a cool reward for completing a secret challenge (maybe collecting all the other costumes) would be to give the player a customizable hat or something, which they can texture themselves, I don't know how you would do it or if it would work, but I think it would be a cool addition if you can (and want to)

Slimekeep idea: you can add a little subtitle screen after you completed the game and after the subtitles everything gets colour and you are in your house when you exit there are no slimes and no green then you can tap a sign that says “do you wanna restart” and when you click it you restart the game.

I think projectiles would look much better if the trail didn’t disappear right away when projectile hits target + hit confirm on enemy like quick white flash would make it a lot juicier. Also little shadows around entities (just ellipse wider than taller) would blend them more with the scene and look more natural Another thing I noticed is this “explosion” after hitting enemy - I am just overall not convinced with how it looks. Maybe “parts” of what you hit could explode in direction reverse to the hit normal instead of being just full circle every time + maybe add little bit of gravity to these parts + (optional but this would look freaking amazing) make them bounce like if they were actually touching a ground with high dampen value All in all - spending 2 years solo on a game is simply insane. Wish you all the best.

Awesome looking game man! Super motivating to a fellow solo dev. I had an idea/question though. Everything looks awesome, but the green for some reason hurts my eyes! Lol. I guess no one else is bothered.. but in a later version, do you think you could implement a post-effect where players could change the hue? It's a fairly easy thing to implement in post, but didn't know if you'd thought about it or would consider it. Just thought I'd put it out there. Also -then the game could literally be played in random color if you wanted, or in almost any color players chose.

everything looks excellent, my last hope for the game is good lore, there's plans with the slime book, I hope it makes sense and is able to explain the enemies which seem a bit all over the place. is there a mine in the slime keep? Is this in the future or an a distant galaxy a long time ago? are all the slimes a servant of the king? there is a god it seems, are they religious? No need to answer they are examples of what could be in the slime book, and yes I am a huge Gungeon fan.

I just realized you could add another layer of depth: When a slime is in the pen, it will confer a stat upgrade to your pet depending on the type; however, once you upgrade your slime, the slime will disappear from the pen. So you would have to decide if you prefer having the stat boost as you gain more and more slimes in your pen, or if you'd prefer a permanent upgrade from the skill tree. You could then put a limit on how many slimes can be in the pen, unless you upgrade it, thus making having slimes in the pen more and more valuable, plus this would allow you to get better upgrades because you can only spend slimes that are actually in the pen, and if your pen can only hold 3 slimes, then you can't get any upgrades that require 4 slimes. Incidentally, you spelled _category_ wrong. XD

Honestly a clear concept is the only thing you need to make a game... Which for you meant learning how to game dev and making a fun totally not monster hunter meets Slimerancher twin stick shooter thing... Which a MVP you only truly need is if you lack motvation or have a real deadline which it seems like you don't... And in fact yoou are nearly done and it's been 2 years most games take 3 so you have plenty of time left to finish on the standard scaudel. So yerah looking really good! And rember any progress is progress and what have you really thrown out? So I doubt any of the first year was wasted.
