Use these "SO" expressions in your conversations!
Hi Everyone!
The word "so" is used A LOT in English. We know "so" can be used in a similar way to "very", for example:
- Today is so hot.
- The food looked so good.
- There were so many people at the beach.
But, what about expressions with the word "so"? Usually, the "so" does not mean "very".
In this lesson we'll go through 20 very common expressions that native speakers use on a daily basis.
Here they are:
1.every so often
2.So what?
3.so-so
4.How so?
5.or so
6.so long as
7.it just so happens
8.I believe so
9.I hope so
10.I think so
11.I told you so
12.I’m afraid so
13.If so
14.If you don’t mind my/me saying so
15.so far so good
16.and so on
17.so that
18.without so much as
19.so much for
20.only so much/many

I can't thank you enough, Arnel. You work so hard in this video, that's lit! By the way, a similar meaning in Spanish for "told ya" would be "te lo dije"; for "so far so good", "hasta ahora bien"; for "so (that)", "para (que)"; for "it just so happens", "casualmente"; "so long as", "siempre que"; "so-so", "más o menos"; "so what?", "¿y qué?; "I'm afraid so", "me temo que sí"; "if so", "si es así,"; "I hope so", "eso espero". "If you don't mind my saying so", "disculpe que se lo diga" and "Without so much as", "sin siquiera".

Hey Arnel. "So what" is also a Spanish expression. We say "y que" that's also unpolite. My favorite expression is "it just so happen" because that gives me the impression that something good is going to happen. It just so happen that many fo these expression have used by my coworkers. Those expression are more clear for me now. Thank you so much Arnel for takign your time to help me to improve my English.

It's very interesting how, in different languages, we can express feelings in such various ways, not necessarily as translations of each other. For example, as italian, I would have translated "it just so happens that" simply with "what a coincidence that" or "if you don't mind me saying so" with "forgive me for intruding, but...", "so far so good" with "everything ok so far", "without so much as" with "not even a...", "only so much/many" with negative "there isn't/aren't so much/many". I guess that many of them sound like idioms or sarcastic sentences but, in the end, they make a big difference between the way a native speaks and a not-native would translate, even if he speaks grammatically correct. Thank you very much Arnel for this umpteenth amazing, funny and enriching lesson!

-Mike? Why in such a rush, you ran past me without so much as a greeting! -Hello Pete, so what? -Well you could've at least.. never mind, you're being a bit rude though if you don't mind me saying so! -How so? It just so happened you bumped into me while I was hurrying to school! - You're off the hook so long as you say hello! Anyway, how's school, then, Mike? -So-so.. My English is intermediate. .Science is difficult to learn but I'm trying my best at Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Biology and so forth.. -Do you think you work hard enough to pass your exams? -I hope so, yeah! I need to take breaks sometimes because there Is only so much homework... I cram every so often to pass pop quizzes though, so they're a cinch for me! Plus I help three or so classmates of mine so that they get so-so marks and don't fail. -So great! Have you failed any yourself yet? -I'm afraid so! I didn't have so much time to study on the summer holiday so I wasn't prepared for the annual examination in Autumn; however, I did well afterwards and now I'm on top of my class! Besides, I'm very clever, at least everyone considers me so... They think I'm intelligent ,SO much SO, that teachers tell me to teach instead every SO often -Wow that's sooo awesome! And how is your day going? -so far so good, so much for your questions! I'm running late, I told you so at first! Gotta dash! Is it nine yet? -I don't think so! It's 24 or so minutes to nine! It's still so early, Mike! -Ok see you later! Thank you so much for asking! -Right then, have a great morning... and afternoon, and evening.. and so on! -you too, and I'm so sorry for not saying hello when we met! Goodbye!

Finally, I don't like to say goodbye without so much as saying thank you, so I truly appreciate you taking the time to do such awesome videos. By the way, here there are some translations into Spanish of your examples: Every so often: de vez en cuando So what?: ¿Y qué? So-so: más o menos How so?: ¿Y eso? So long as: siempre y cuando It just so happens: resulta que I believe so: eso creo I told you so: te lo dije I'm afraid so: me temo que sí And so on: y así sucesivamente So that: de modo que/para que/a fin de que Without so much: sin siquiera
